Another one for the book! The lever forward of the guard pulls down and slides the barrel forward. Ingenious and effective! Barrels are Leopold Bernard Damascus. Leopold is considered the father of Damascus barrel making. This is a great price on such a high quality and historical shotgun that can still be used in the field.

10 gauge nitro proofed hammer guns are rather hard for us to come by. In 1902 when built this waterfowl double was probably entry level so it does not catch the eye with fancy engraving and wood. What this veteran has to offer is great stock dimensions, proofs, weight, and choke. I would not be afraid to take this old man into the duck blind for that is where he was always intended to be.

Manufactured about 1887 this beautiful water fowl classic is in very sound condition. The bores have some light haze but no deep pitting and the barrels appear on face.

I really appreciate the very high grade beautiful oak leaf engraving which is fairly deeply engraved. The scroll work is of very high quality also.

The "C" shaped hammers are extremely elegant and are below rib site.

A classic English water fowl shotgun for a great price.

This behemoth double rifle I have shot and it shoots extremely well! I hit every beer can I aimed at.

William Smith was a gun and rifle maker at 110 Lancaster Street Birmingham England from 1846-1890. Forty four years a gun maker he certainly was established.

This is rifled full length and the rifling is strong with only some light pitting in places. Ready to hunt with now but with a little detail restoration could be a show piece.

Henry Nock made guns for the English nobility, the military, and hunters. Nock later became Wilkinson Sword. I use to shave with a Wilkinson razor! Yes, the same company.

This is a quality gun and very shoo-table being in nice condition. A close examination of the proof marks leads me to believe this gun was built by Wilkinson under the Nock name on or after 1813.

Leopold Bernard Damascus. One of our true fathers of Damascus barrel makers! See this gun just for fun with barrels by Bernard... ... http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/24957 While faded, the name La Page still reads in the green wool felt of this original case with original tools. The gun while plain of engraving is of absolute high quality with exquisite hammers. A rare find and I hate to sell this but I cannot keep all my favorites. Note that the original case has a slight dome to it! Bores have some pitting but a very shootable and collectible pinfire.

Four pounds, four oz... Almost as light as the proverbial feather! I would recommend the RST 410 2.5" shells for this gun. RST does not list them on their web site but call them at 570-553-1651 and ask for Julie. She will take great care of you!

Retailed in Australia but built in England this petite flower has very nice stock dimensions and elegant baby sized hammers. There is some light pitting in the first half of the bores which should clean up with a light back bore.

This pair of extra finish Purdey's were special ordered to be engraved by Alison Hunt, Daughter of the engraving icon Ken Hunt. Alison apprenticed under her famous father and has gained tremendous respect in the sporting art world of gun makers. A glance and then detailed examination of these guns confirms the high level of her talent.

These guns are stunningly beautiful and priced less than half of the replacement cost while still being in near new condition. We have the matched pair but the owner says if someone wants one sell one and he will keep the other! (To see the number two gun go to our inventory number 3200). These guns are priced each but will sell the pair for a reduced price of $110,000.

James Woodward. Wow, one of my favorite gun makers. They made less than seven thousand guns and most of these were made before WWI. Bought out by Purdey during WWII you can still today order a Woodward O/U from James Purdey.

This Woodward has the classic arcaded fences they were renowned for. The wood is spectacular and the tasteful restoration has left the gun in almost new condition.

Note the long length of pull and the modern stock dimensions. This is a gun that you can shoot and enjoy for years to come and pass down to your sons and daughters with pride.

It would be hard not to fall in love with the deep chisel leaf fences on this classic Purdey. This gun would make an excellent field gun for those rough conditions or rainy days you do not want to take your collectible grade Purdey or Boss out. The bores are bright but there is some light pitting in places on this gun which allows us to sell this gun at a very attractive price.

I dated this fine shotgun and was not surprised to find it was built between the wars in 1936. William Evans is still in business; see their web site at https://www.williamevans.com/.

This particular shotgun is in excellent kit, still measuring at its original proofed bore diameters of .729. The beautiful case colors remain easily at 80% and the barrel black over 95% plus. Put this all together with excellent stock dimensions and what appears to be the guns original makers’ case (including rare William Evans vintage snap caps!) and it is plain to see this gun is truly a bargain.

This is very nice little Dickson round action at a price point one seldom sees for one of these fine guns. Built in 1887 when the Dickson round action was gaining in popularity, this gun shows off the classic round action and fine engraving they were capable during that period. Note the very nice wood. The balance is excellent, it feels much lighter than the listed weight due to this great balance.

The sleeving, done and proofed in England, is well done, being very hard to see even on close inspection.

This shotgun shows near 100% case color and near 100% barrel black and wood finish. Measuring up this fine shotgun I was so intrigued by its qualities and unusual little details that I had to go to my book shelf and pull out my copy of "Thomas Horsley ~ Gunmaker of "York" by David Baker. An hour later I realized I needed to get this gun listed but I have to say I enjoyed every minute reading the fascinating and remarkable history of the Horsley family and about the fine guns they made. There are many little features that make this gun add up ahead of the competition, too many to list here so give me a call and I will describe to you this fair ladies many virtues.

Great wood and stock dimensions for the upland hunter combined with super lightweight and chokes that will put the food on the table.

Don't let all those positive attributes distract you from the beauty and craftsmanship in this fine sidelock.

Known as "The Gun makers of the West" (Western England of course!) this firm started business in Bristol in 1876 and were still in business in 1964.

This is a very nice Lancaster featuring the self opening mechanism. It is ready for the field. These guns have received a bum wrap as they have been called "Wrist breakers" as they were supposedly hard to close. When you close these it is cocking the main springs after firing. I find them no harder to close than a Purdey, not a big deal. The secret, as in Purdey's, is knowing how to snap the gun closed. Learn this trick and it is easy. This gun is very high quality at any price.

So many of the quality gun makers names have been lost with time and this gun by Charles Smith gives us a direct connection with a smaller maker that very little is known but where the quality shows through. Nigel Brown's Book on British Gunmakers Volume III lists this as a Newark England maker. The gun retains considerable amount of case color on the beautifully engraved locks. I might mention the locks are high quality also with safety sears. This is a real value in an English sidelock.

What a nice gun for less than many lower end new machine made doubles. Built ~ 1925 this is a great example of pre-war English craftsmanship. Notice the weight! What a great gun to carry all day. There was a fair number of these made in Britain and the story goes it was because of the number of wounded soldiers that lost vision in their right eye after WWI. This gun does this well, when you lift the gun to your right shoulder the rib lines up with the left eye. If this works for you this is a bargain!

These Prussian built Sauer side locks are very high quality. This one has been expertly spliced in the pistol grip to bend up the drop measurements to modern dimension. The bore does have some light pitting but overall bright. Barrels are possibly reduced in length but the they are filed together at the muzzle if done, it was not much.

Nice Damascus brown on these barrels. The wrist has been well repaired with epoxy and seems very strong. A little checkering and cosmetics could make this a nice looking gun. The bores are fairly bright with a light frost but have numerous dings and one dent that should be removed.

What a fabulous little and light 16g. by this premier maker. Which seldom happens, we received this lithe magic wand in its original makers case, numbed to the gun. Really this Holland has it all, balance, stock dimensions, and simple classic elegance. Sometimes we are convinced a fine shotgun has to be covered in engraving and fancy wood to be the best. There are exceptions to every rule and this petite 16 is exceptional.

James Woodward 20g. Sidelock ejector with 26” steel barrels. Tons of case color on the locks and beautiful wood with excellent and long dimensions. These prewar 20g. over and under’ s are ever so rare and extremely sought after as they are known for their magic wand quality. Delivered to Abercrombie and Fitch NY on the 29th Dec 1929, the most sought after vintage of British BEST guns. If this Woodward 20g. is a magic wand it was possessed by Merlin.

I find that many look at guns of this type and price and cannot justify the cost but then will go out and buy a new car at this price point and in ten years that car is worth almost nothing. Invest and enjoy a beauty like this little 20 and in ten years it will be worth considerably more than the price, not less or nothing like their 10 year old car. Take this opportunity to make a solid investment while allowing you to own and enjoy what many connoisseurs consider to be the paragon of all shotguns.

These are such beautiful shotguns. They are like the Dickson round actions in that they are built on a trigger plate and are a true round action. These guns also feature a third rising bite similar to those found on the Rigby Bissell patent sidelocks. Near 100% case color and blue, this fine shotgun is in original condition showing amazing high condition. The stock retains a fantastic hidden retractable sling.

I have always loved these Manufrance Ideal guns. They are well made and extremely elegant.

Correspondence from William Powell (see our photos) lets us know that this gun was completed the 8th of June 1936 for a E.T. Taylor Esq.. The English consider these between the wars doubles to be their very best .

This truly is a classic Westley as it features their famous and ergonomic radiused action, scalloped receiver , and of course there sliding bolt rib extension. This gun is virtually in every way the same quality of the top notch grade Westley drop lock but without that feature. The large amount of cast off actually comes up well to match only the 2" of drop.

Definitely for a right handed shooter.

Note the modern stock dimensions and the choice of chokes for a long and a close shot. We have found through a search of the original ledgers (Thank you Chris Batha owner of Charles Boswell) that this shotgun was completed in September of 1903 and was purchased by one F.H. Francotte shotguns sometimes, to my thinking, seem to be a little over looked. These shotguns should be selling for much more money than they do as the quality is exceptional. If you recognize quality and craftsmanship and appreciate a real value take a look at the vintage Francotte shotguns. This cased two barrels set is a fantastic value.

Note the two barrel set is extremely useful as you have a great open set of barrels for shooting over pointing dogs and a tighter set for general bird hunting.

Note the weight! Not much over 6 pounds!

Manufrance Ideal guns as some of you may well know have been a special interest of mine for many years. This is a very light 12 with very interesting fine engraving on the rib. The original retractable sling is in good condition. I have shown a picture of the rising third bite (similar to the Rigby) which is one of the many things I love about these guns, that and being an affordable true round trigger plate action!

Upland hunters pay attention. This is a very sound, strong, well made English boxlock for a super price. At only 6 lbs. 9 oz. she would be a pleasure to carry all day. Better than to just carry, this little gun was built to swing on flighting birds. She balances just forward of the hinge pin on the iron resulting in an ever so light barrel weight forward... ...what many of us consider the perfect gun balance. Note the gun is cased in a vintage but solid English canvas case with trade label, cleaning rod, and cleaning ends, and snap caps.

Most W.W. Greener’s have their famous side safety, which although I don't really mind them, many do not care for. This extremely solid gun has excellent dimensions, a heavy proof, and rare for a Greener, a top tang safety!

The previous owner has graciously said he will provide the next owner with four box's (10 rd box's) of Kent Tungsten matrix for hunting where non-tox is the law.

I might note that with these high dimensions this would make an excellent sporting clays gun and or a live pigeon ring gun.

Medium deep pitting in both bores. One significant dent in the right barrel 4 3/4" from the muzzle on the right barrel. Gun is off face and needs rejoining. Chequering is gone in places, would need full re-cut in a restoration. Keep in mind this is a true Prussian round top Sauer and it features the long action table. Good news is that the barrels will probably clean up with a back boring as they have excellent thick walls.

This despite the need of some basic maintenance is actually a solid well made double. Built ~ 1891 it is in excellent condition for its age with solid Damascus unmodified barrels with good bores. The gun is ever so slightly off face but this can easily be fixed. The forend inlay originally was horn but now is brass so it would be nice to put this back to original and we could arrange to do this.

This fine Greener certainly could be used just the way it is and provide years of enjoyment (providing the proper loads were used).

This gun is tight with great bores and ready for the field. Barrels ring like chimes and have great wall thickness. She carries her share of bruises and scrapes from a sporting life in the field but these do nothing to suppress her enthusiasm to be afield again. A great entry level shotgun for a first time SxS upland double gunner. Let this experienced mature French madame get you hooked on the double gun life! * You will see on the left barrel a stamp that says "Sauer." This for some unknown reason was added at some point in her history. This fine french shotgun is not a Sauer showing clear Saint Etienne French proofs.

A nice little 16 that someone refinished with a modern clear finish. It would look so much better with a London oil finish! I like this little gun. There are three or four very small dings in the barrels which we could remove but fore this price the gun is as is.

Proofed in August of 1963 this well made gun has excellent bores and is very tight. The double under bite lockup also has the double Kirsten barrel extensions that Merkel is famous for on its higher grade guns. The 6.5x57R round is one of my favorites as it is low recoil and fast and accurate. Based on the 8mm Mauser case this round can be purchased or easily reloaded. It is similar to the 257 Roberts but was invented by the Germans at least 20 years earlier!

This double rifle from this prestigious Belgian maker is truly a work of art. Exquisite engraving, craftsmanship, and balance. This fine rifle comes in its makers oak and leather case and is fitted with a Swarovski Habicht 1.25-4 variable scope using classic and elegant claw mounts. Chambered in 8x57JRS I have to say my favorite drilling is in this caliber and have found it a superb caliber for any North American big game. I encourage you to look at the pictures and check out the quality of the engraving. Note this gun has a cheek piece on the right for a left handed shooter but I have measured the cast on this rifle and it has none so it comes up with sights perfectly lined up for a right handed shooter also. If a buyer is right handed we would be glad to remove the cheek piece with no charge.

Walter Locke rifles were made for them by Westley Richards. This gun is suitable for any dangerous game, Jumbo on down. The bore is excellent. This would make an excellent working rifle to take to Africa. Notice the extra heavy reinforced barrels and the 10 lbs. 8 oz. weight. The gun is very well made and features disk set strikers, large double under lugs and Greener style cross bolt safety third bite. Our double rifle gunsmith Ken Owen checked the regulation and supplied the load given on the target shown here. A great shooting large bore English double rifle.

Lyon & Lyon sold British made rifles in London and Calcutta India. They were an outfitter for the sportsman bound out of London to the far parts of the British Empire. Charles Osborne built most of their guns and this is an excellent example. On the underside of the forend is the logo of a harpoon gun, the Charles Osborne logo. Featuring auto ejectors, bushed firing pins, dolls head with 3rd bite rib extension, and full sidelocks, this was a very nice gun in it day. The Bores on this rifle are excellent and the accuracy exceptional for a double rifle featuring four shots in 1'! See target and load provide. This rifle deserves to be in the field again soon, on the hunt for game. Are you the person to put it to its task?

I like this rifle. It obviously has seen a good amount of service but the bore is bright with sharp rifling showing little wear indicating the previous owners priorities were in the right place when it came to cleaning their guns.

While being very attractive and functional I have found out this rifle is really quite rare as according to Walter Winfer's research Holland only built 24 of their single shot rifles on the Field's patent, all completed during the 1890's. See British Single Shot Rifles, Volume 5, Rochester, 2004, pp.11-14. Our rifle was built right during this period between 1895 and 1896. This is one of those rifles one wishes they could wave a magic wand over and ask it to talk and tell all of its stories. I am sure more than one of its stories would have us riveted to our chairs.....

You have to love the round action on these early and higher grade Holland rook rifles. This rifle is one of the most original examples we have had in the shop and has many wonderful features:

-Peep sight -Peep front site -two folding leaf sites

The bore has a small amount of pitting just in front of the chamber and then cleans up immediately to a bright clean and sharp rifled bore. This rifle should shoot excellently! The round action has near 50% original case hardening and I believe the wood finish and barrel blue to be all original also. A super little Holland that is a joy to carry in hand .

This classic Krieghoff has seen a fair amount of field use having very little case hardening remaining, now mostly gray. The bores are bright with sharp rifling on the 9.3x72R so the gun should shoot well in both shotgun and rifle mode. I estimate the gun to be built between 1910 and 1921.

Bore has some very light pitting in places but over all very bright with sharp rifling. We are unsure of case length. Stock is loose on action so I suspect an internal crack that needs repairing. We can do this here.

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge
1158
This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

This soft bound book is about the history and development of the Manufrance Ideal model round action trigger plate shotguns and rifles with many pictures and diagrams and the coveted serial number to date chart. We imported four of these from France. I am keeping one so we have three for sale. Yes, all the print is in French but I find with the charts, photographs and appendices the book very useful even if one does not understand a lot of French. I have a passion for these guns as they are so well made and designed but also beautiful to hold and to look at. Like a beautiful woman! :)

I know the price seems high but these were not inexpensive to us and the only book on the subject we are aware of so we paid the price.

This has been rather amateur stocked at least in the butt. The hidden sling is missing and needs a butt plate or pad. The barrels show some pitting but I believe would clean up as you could remove .005 from each and they should be clean. The top two tang screws need replacing. This was a project I never got too and worthy . I am open to trades.:)

Nice Damascus brown on these barrels. The wrist has been well repaired with epoxy and seems very strong. A little checkering and cosmetics could make this a nice looking gun. The bores are fairly bright with a light frost but have numerous dings and one dent that should be removed.

A nice little 16 that someone refinished with a modern clear finish. It would look so much better with a London oil finish! I like this little gun. There are three or four very small dings in the barrels which we could remove but fore this price the gun is as is.
