One of a trio this fine Purdey was completed in 1878 for Lord Ormathwaite and was later owned by the Honorable Gerald Walsh. See Purdey letter in the photo's.

Stunning marble cake wood and balance and very modern dimensions make this a very desirable Purdey. I am especially enamored with the bar in wood action, the most difficult to stock and the most expensive choice in the Purdey catalog.

*Note this gun still retains its full and full chokes allowing the new owner to easily have them opened to any favorite combination. We can arrange for this at no extra charge.

This is an extremely original and rare Dickson double which is in its nitro proof and is ready to shoot. Featuring great wall thickness, stock dimensions and rebounding hammers I cannot think what more one would want in a vintage Scottish double.

The Dickson book by Donald Dallas lists this gun to have been completed April 9th 1868.

Those of you that insist on original and un-restored guns pay attention to this one! She is a keeper.

Beyond lovely, this London high end hammer double has great barrels with excellent walls and Damascus pattern. Recent nitro proofs make this a shotgun you can use, not just admire.

Holland & Holland Top Lever Back Action ~ An excellent 16g. Hammer gun for clays or field
Hammerguns
16 gauge

This gun started life as a Paradox but now has been made exclusively a shotgun. For those that are not familiar with the Holland paradox guns they were shotguns that also worked as rifles featuring rifling in the last few inches of the bore. As many found the rifling interfered with perfect shot patterns they would have the rifling removed to make them a better shotgun and that is what has been done with classic Holland 16g.

This Holland features excellent stock dimensions and handles very nicely, feeling lighter than its true weight. This would make an excellent 16g to participate in Vintager events and also work well for upland hunting over pointing dogs.

This was a personal gun which I have loved but the simple fact is I don't shoot it much anymore as I am in love with my Boss 16 gauge. I don't like to see a gun idle in my personal safe so my prejudice for 16g. is going to make another sportsman very lucky to own this stunning 12 .

Hammerless Sidelocks

This light and lively Purdey is in very nice condition and has a fascinating history. Purdey records show the gun was completed the fifth of August 1887 and sold to Lord Desborough , W.H. Grenfell. In 1920 the Purdey records show the gun was sold to an American millionaire F.D.M. Strachan. The Stachan family made their fortune at the turn of the century as brokers for steam and sailing ships which hauled cotton and timber from Georgia to overseas markets. We have some history on him and he is a very colorful figure.

The Purdey records show that in 1935 the gun was in the Possession of a Miss Gertrude Boeckmann of Saint Paul Minnesota. We have a copy of her obituary. She was only 20 years old when she received this shotgun. The obituary mentions she was an avid fly-fisherman and talented and enthusiastic figure skater. The obituary lists all of her kids, grand-kids, and great grand kids. It would be interesting to contact them and learn more about this very interesting lady! I would love a picture.

On its own merits this fine shotgun is tight on face and ready for the field. The engraving is still very sharp and the wood is in excellent condition. Note the case has Gertrude's initials and St. Paul monogrammed on the case, obviously original to when she received the gun. It would be fun to see this gun go to another avid sportswoman!

Stephen Grant Sidelock with stunning Nitro Proofed Damascus Barrels in its makers case

Some of you know me and that I am attracted to quality Damascus guns. This gun pulled me across the room when I saw it in a rack in England. From that distance I could see it was a shotgun of the highest form without knowing the makers name. Much to my delight I found on close inspection a Stephen Grant, one of my favorite makers. The condition of this fine shotgun is very nice and appears in original condition seeing little if no restoration. There is a small stock extension which we could remove and replace with a fine leather covered pad if one would like for a LOP up to 15 1/2"

Completed in 1903 this is a true Edwardian era gun ( Queen Victoria died in 1901 thank you Austin). The gun is found in an original Grant case which also is in very nice original condition.

Does anyone recognize the family crest in the stock?

This is a super elegant round action from Scotland with gorgeous nitro proofed Damascus barrels. Stunning Damascus pattern. Did I mention how beautiful these barrels are?

These trigger plate actions remove a large amount of wood from between the action so to strengthen it this gun has had a pin put cross wise across the head of the stock to prevent cracking. It was professionally and elegantly done with horn covers. The butt has a 1" horn extension.

A super price for a sound and beautiful round action.

Stephen Grant "BEST" Sidelock ~ What a wonderful shotgun

Stephen Grant. He worked for Boss for awhile and then gave his notice, moved next door, and hung his shingle. In not long he was counted among England's greatest gunmakers. It is said Boss and Grant were on good terms and often shared work when one needed help. I observed an example of this once when I found some filers initials on a Grant that looked familiar. I realized I had seen them on a Boss that I had!

This is a super example of what Grant could do and at a very attractive price. Note the 2 3/4" nitro proofs.

This light weight and stunningly beautiful shotgun has super dimensions and balance. We seldom see game scene engraving of this quality on English doubles.

This name is often confused with Westley Richards. While they are both respected gun makers they are not related. William Richards shop was in Liverpool and was quite old, starting in the late 1700's and only closing in the year 2000.

*Note that this gun has a wood extension instead of a pad but keep in mind we can easily remove the extension and install a Best quality leather pad for only $300.00. This only takes about two to three weeks.

This is a very original and high grade English sidelock by one of London's most respected makers. Henry Atkin worked for James Purdey before hanging his own shingle.

I love the original and unmessed with feel of this shotgun. The barrels are well in "12" proof with both barrels at .735 and with excellent wall thickness. The stock dimensions are perfect for the masses and the chokes being full and full one can now make them anything they want. We charge $75.00 per barrel to open chokes. All in all an excellent London gun at a very attractive price point when compared with a similar quality London gun such as a Boss or Purdey.

Great stock dimensions for many combined with a useful choking and excellent wall thickness makes this little and light English sidelock a real find.

This is a well made gun but has had some stock modifications done by a professional to fit a specific shooter. It would make a great restock project or just shoot it as it is. The current dimensions are very modern. It would also for the artisan be fun to try grain painting and make the stock changes invisible.

This is a shooter as is or would make a great restoration project. The barrel blue is thin. I detect it is ever so slightly off face as with the forend off I can barely detect the slightest wiggle.

On the positive side the barrels ring true and are sound. The wood would be quite beautiful if given a new authentic oil finish.

I have always appreciated William Evans shotguns. While they had their guns built for them in the London and Birmingham trade they obviously required a very high standard with details and quality that set them apart from many other makers. This dedication to quality is certainly a factor in why they are still in business today.

16g. Sidelocks are very hard for me to find so I was extremely excited to find this little gem in the UK and bring it across the pond. The non –selective single trigger (believe me that is a good thing, selective triggers are the ones that give single triggers a reputation for failure) is crisp and works perfectly. Choking is perfect for upland hunting or woodcock or southern bobwhites. I love 16g. and I really like this gun.

Finding 16g. nitro proofed English guns with 30" barrels has been like trying to find rocking horse poop. Well, maybe not that bad but they have been so hard to find of late. I am a 16 gauge fan as most of you know and I have to say I do love these long barrels that swing for us so well. This gun is not fancy but is very well made and the barrels are in excellent condition.

Boss 20g. Sidelock in exceptional condition and investment grade original. Featuring 28”whitworth steel barrels, 75% case color, 98% blue, in its makers case. This petite flower weighs in at 5 lbs. 4.5 oz., lighter than many 28 gauges. Stocked to the fences, assisted opening, iconic and crisp Boss single trigger, chopper-lump barrels, and stunning wood with super dimensions, this Boss has all and more of what we would expect from a Boss. What I expect most of all from Boss is what I think is their true trade mark, “Balance.” Let me tell you, get this gun between your hands and you will not want to let it go as you would feel your letting go of a part of yourself.

Twenty gauge Boss doubles are like prime real estate. They seldom come up for sale, are priced at the top of the market, and there are never any regrets in owning as they are always worth what you paid and more. A solid investment at $57000.00

We have the factory letter on this one, see the pictures. The letter says it was sold to "The Parker Whelen" which I believe means it was for the well known outfitter Parker Whelen & Co.

It is fairly rare to find a .410 with auto ejectors and with 28" barrels. bores are nice and clean.

Townsend Whelen Born March 6, 1877 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. Died December 23, 1961 (aged 84) St, Louis, Missouri, U.S. Buried Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, U.S. Allegiance United States of America Service/branch United States National Guard United States Army Years of service 1895-1899 (National Guard) 1902-1936 (Army) Rank Colonel Spouse(s) Mary (Pratt) Whelen Townsend Whelen (March 6, 1877 – December 23, 1961), called "Townie" by his friends,[1] was an American hunter, soldier, writer, outdoorsman and rifleman. Whelen was a colonel in the United States Army,[2] and a prolific writer on guns and hunting, writing over two thousand magazine articles in his career. He was a contributing editor to Sports Afield, American Rifleman, Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, Guns & Ammo, and other magazines, and author of Suggestions to Military Riflemen, The American Rifle, Telescopic Rifle Sights, The Hunting Rifle, Small Arms and Ballistics, Hunting Big Game (of which he was the editor), Amateur Gunsmithing, and Why Not Load Your Own. An autobiography, Mr. Rifleman, was begun by Whelen, but finished by his family and published after his death.[3] Whelen edited and wrote the introduction to WDM Bell's autobiography "Bell of Africa" and arranged an American publisher.[4] An expert rifleman with few peers, Whelen could reportedly hit man-sized target at 200 yards using the bolt action, open-sighted M1903 Springfield .30-06 service rifle, scoring six hits in ten seconds flat, and could do it on command. Colonel Whelen experimented with the service .30-06 Springfield cartridge while he was commanding officer of Frankford Arsenal in the early 1920s. Frankford Arsenal machine shop foreman James Howe, who later formed the rifle-making firm of Griffin & Howe, assisted Whelen modifying the .30-06 case to fire bullets of different calibers. Whelen was particularly interested in creating a cartridge to fire heavier bullets from M1903 rifle actions available from the Civilian Marksmanship Program.[5] Townsend Whelen's great passion was the great outdoors and hunting, and he undertook many expeditions into the wilderness of both North and South America, living off the land, hunting and exploring. Apart from his professional interest in the rifle as a military weapon and competitive target shooting, he also experimented with rifles and cartridges in survival and wilderness applications, using the different loads in his hunting rifles to take both small and large game while on long hunting excursions in the wilds. The comprehensive knowledge and experience reflected in Whelen's writing covered the black powder era at the end of the 1800s and spanned the transitional period into smokeless arms, resulting in the modern high velocity rifles of the 20th century.

You have probably heard me say this before but finding extremely original English guns in high condition is becoming near impossible. The good news is once in a while we get a gun in that is in fantastic original condition. This is one of those guns.

Weighing less than some English 2" guns this gun balances extremely well with a very lively feeling between the hands. The case color is near 90%, the wood finish 90%, the barrel black 80%.

This gun has its original case and hang tag which interestingly enough mentions that the gun was tested with American ammunition. Sold to an American? The original case shows considerable wear but the gun also comes with a Huey style oak & leather case with French fitted tools making an extremely attractive package and a seriously sound investment.

Known for its light rib-less shotguns Alex Martin of Glasgow Scotland did not actually build many with this feature. I have only seen a few over the years so was very pleased to find this one and to find it in such excellent condition. The gun is not actually rib-less but has a rib near the breech, another short section mid length, then again at the muzzle. Check out the pictures!

The condition is high on this fine shotgun. Over 90% original blue, case hardening and wood finish. It has obviously not seen a lot of use. Even being so light and with such a long length of pull this little part of Scotland balances beautifully.

The Francotte Eagle grade was a high grade gun built by Francotte for the American market. This gun was retailed by Von Lengerke & Detmold of New York, at the time considered to be the finest outdoor sporting store in the world.

This eagle grade features exceptional chiseled fences and top notch engraving and of course the American eagle in gold on the bottom of the action. This is an extremely handsome shotgun of quality. The barrels have been recently blacked. There is some loss to the lettering on the barrels but still quite legible. The professional replacement butt stock is sound and in very nice condition.

Built in 1894 this is one of the most beautiful boxlocks the British ever built. The last owner had the barrels sleeved by English Gunsmith Kirk Merrington in Texas and he did an excellent job. The seam is near invisible. Being sleeved in the USA the gun was not able to be re-proofed but Kirk Merrington uses the best new steel barrels available and they have been shooting nitro loads with no issues for the last 20 years or more Kirk has been in business.

Upland hunters pay attention. This is a very sound, strong, well made English boxlock for a super price. At only 6 lbs. 9 oz. she would be a pleasure to carry all day. Better than to just carry, this little gun was built to swing on flighting birds. She balances just forward of the hinge pin on the iron resulting in an ever so light barrel weight forward... ...what many of us consider the perfect gun balance. Note the gun is cased in a vintage but solid English canvas case with trade label, cleaning rod, and cleaning ends, and snap caps.

The full choke in the left with cylinder in the right is a common English choking and was effective in driven shooting. If one opens the left barrel to a light modified and leave the right barrel as is this gun would be a fabulous upland bird shotgun. We can arrange for this and the cost is only $70.

This vintage Westley has barrels with excellent wall thickness. It is perfectly tight on face. Being built between 1890 and 1891 we can ship direct as it is antique.

If some one could use a 14 3/8" LOP we could remove the current pads and put a nice new "Old English" or leather covered pad on the gun which would look very nice.

Of the early Westley guns I like this model as it has the elegance of the early guns but features the Purdey double under bite. Guns before this often only had one or no bites on the under lug which was not near as strong as the design on this gun.

This gun has a lot to offer for the price. Wood worthy of a Boss or Purdey for one. It is tight on face and ready to shoot. There is honest engraving wear showing this old girl has spent a considerable amount of time afield.

I detect and old stock repair in the wrist that has been expertly done and reinforced with an extended top tang. It was so well done it was only because of the extended tang that I was able to figure it out as it is virtually impossible to see without magnification and in just the right light.

I have always admired the Fox Sterlingworth. This admiration comes from appreciation for good design and function and produced at a price the masses could afford. The Sterlingworth is a proven gun for reliability and getting the job done.

Today in the vintage gun world I find they are still a great gun for the money. Yes, they can be heavy and have a bit more drop than we might like today, but they are a classic work horse with an excellent history.

This is good solid example. The blue is a bit thinning and there is maybe 20% case hardening left. It is tight on face and field ready.

What a great little 16 gauge and ever so light at 5 lbs. 14.5 oz.! We do not often hear a lot about Henry Monk shoguns but they have been with us a long time. Monks business started in Chester England in 1868 and extended until 2000 according to Nigel browns "British Gunmakers Volume II."

This gun features extensive remaining case hardening, 90% or better. The blacking on the barrels is also 85-90% or better.

Very pretty wood (a restock) on this little Ideal with nice long barrels. This grade does not feature the rising bite featured on some higher grade Ideal guns but it does have the classic double under-bite with the true trigger plate action. I see some epoxy bedding material in places where the wood meets the action but this will not in anyway affect performance and allows us to sell this gun at a much reduced price.

There is some light pitting in the bores which could be removed but if it were me I would take this light lady afield just as she is and enjoy her doing what she does best.

Do you like French wine and food like myself? If so you might consider a classic French double. The Manufrance "Ideal" with its amazing rising bite is a great choice.

Nicely restocked with good dimensions, great wall thickness, and solid chokes, this true trigger plate round action has a lot to offer. There is very light pitting in the bores which could easily be removed (or left and shoot it as is as I would do). Featuring the classic "eye glass" trigger guard and nice long 29" chopper lump barrels. I love how these guns open by pulling back on the lever behind the trigger guard which is very ergonomic.

If you know me, you will know I love these guns. Give me a call and I would be glad to let you know why.

James Purdey 20g. Boxlock ejector ~ How rare is that! Cased
Boxlocks
20 gauge

James Purdey made very few boxlocks and I have seen only a matched pair of 20 gauge guns 40 years ago at a gun show near Seattle and none since.

This fine little 20 gauge does have high end features as one might expect from a Purdey including the fact that it has highly polished double sears. The Overhanging sear is a safety sear. It also has a very beautifully done third bite with a hidden "Nose" rib extension at the breech that has a slide coming from the breech that goes over the top of the nose. This is similar to the Westley Richards sliding third bite but much more elegant and petite. *If you are considering this gun to have bent I would discourage you from buying this gun as it recently had a professional and extremely strong wrist repair. I am sure it is stronger than the original wood now but extreme heating of the stock could possibly weaken the epoxy bond.

This little 1892 gem is beautifully balanced and comes in a period case with accouterments. A super nice little 20g Purdey and it does not cost 30-40 grand.

J. Blanch serial numbers were destroyed in WWII but references of dated guns give us an idea of age. It is believed that the company was at serial number 6000 in 1900 so this gun was probably made just shy of WWI.

Just imagine showing up at the shooting party with this rubenesque lovely piece of gun making. I have seen the scotch glasses all put down as everyone in the room wanted to hold and “ooh” and “ah” over it. This shotgun looks a bit of behemoth but in reality it is not at all. Your friends would be amazed on how well it is balanced, so well it feels much lighter and handy than you would ever guess. I love that it has three triggers. How about a quickie triple on South Dakota roosters?

I was present on a wild bird hunt in eastern Oregon where I saw this gun take a limit of pheasant and Hungarian partridge on the same day. A sight to behold!

Proofed in August of 1963 this well made gun has excellent bores and is very tight. The double under bite lockup also has the double Kirsten barrel extensions that Merkel is famous for on its higher grade guns. The 6.5x57R round is one of my favorites as it is low recoil and fast and accurate. Based on the 8mm Mauser case this round can be purchased or easily reloaded. It is similar to the 257 Roberts but was invented by the Germans at least 20 years earlier!

Walter Locke rifles were made for them by Westley Richards. This gun is suitable for any dangerous game, Jumbo on down. The bore is excellent. This would make an excellent working rifle to take to Africa. Notice the extra heavy reinforced barrels and the 10 lbs. 8 oz. weight. The gun is very well made and features disk set strikers, large double under lugs and Greener style cross bolt safety third bite. Our double rifle gunsmith Ken Owen checked the regulation and supplied the load given on the target shown here. A great shooting large bore English double rifle.

I believe this early Dickson is quite rare. I have had many vintage Dickson's over the years but this is the first double rifle. She is sound, tight, and in shooting condition despite her un-restored condition.

The Bores are not perfect having some pitting here and there but the rifling is sharp and the bore bright. I believe she will shoot very well. In fact, if she does not, I will take the rifle back for a full refund! (within a limited time of course :))

This rifle may show as being quite dark and over used but surprisingly the bore is very nice and the wood is solid and engraving not worn hardly at all. It is just dark.

I took the gun out in the sun and I could see through the old dark finish that it was well figured and really quite beautiful.

If this rifle could tell stories it is certain it would recount many tiger hunts in the Himalayan foot hills . Tiger hunting was at one time the sport of Kings.

The British really and rightfully had a love affair with the Austrian MS action, especially the Model 1903 with its rotary magazine. This action is light, operates smooth as silk (you will often hear them referred to as "Buttery"), and the rotary feed is ingenious.

This example has a very nice bore and is in nice condition. Although it carries London proofs there is not a makers name on the gun thus we can offer this wonderful rifle at a very fair price. This is the first ever 1903 that I have found in 7mm but perhaps it was due to the British love affair with this caliber. They liked to call it the .275 High Velocity.

This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

This has been rather amateur stocked at least in the butt. The hidden sling is missing and needs a butt plate or pad. The barrels show some pitting but I believe would clean up as you could remove .005 from each and they should be clean. The top two tang screws need replacing. This was a project I never got too and worthy . I am open to trades.:)

Interesting design and will entice one to collect a limit (South Dakota three bird) on the first rise. The barrels are 30" and the gun balances like a dream and it only weighs 6 lbs. 14 oz., I do not know how they did it! Helium in the stock?

Dart is priceless and covers the dog and bird hunting aspects of Vintagedoubles. He is our hero in the field, being an incredible pointer with the best nose of any dog I have ever hunted over. We seem to have a problem keeping him off the kitchen counters if there are any tasty morsels left there.... ....No one is perfect!

James Purdey top lever bar in wood ~ Purdey letter states that this gun was completed in 1878 for Lord Ormathwaite as one of a trio

As many of you may know I am a big fan of 16g. hammer guns. This Scottish built gun has tons to offer with nitro proofs, stunning 30" Damascus barrels, and of course the classic side lever action. I like this shotgun!

*You south paws out there note that this great little gun has no cast so could be good for a right or a left handed shooter.
