T. Murcott 10g. top lever hammer of high quality and ready for restoration ~ 36" barrels!
Hammerguns

Theophilus Murcott is quite famous for being the inventor of the first production hammerless shotgun. He was granted this patent in 1871. They were purchased and closed by W. W. Greener in 1878.

This would make a great project as I know it would turn out to be something really special. This in its day was a very high crafted gun. I love the elegant 36" barrels!

A full restoration would include back boring the barrels for pitting and to add choke, browning of the barrels, rejoin, replace two screws, and complete wood restoration. Finished this would be a very special gun.

Would look great now over the hunting lodge mantel!

James Purdey top lever bar in wood in its makers case ~ Purdey letter states that this gun was completed in 1878 for Lord Ormathwaite as one of a trio

One of a trio this fine Purdey was completed in 1878 for Lord Ormathwaite and was later owned by the Honorable Gerald Walsh. See Purdey letter in the photo's.

Stunning marble cake wood and balance and very modern dimensions make this a very desirable Purdey. I am especially enamored with the bar in wood action, the most difficult to stock and the most expensive choice in the Purdey catalog. In the right barrel towards the muzzle there is a small area of pitting but in the area where there is very little pressure and was obviously there when the barrels were nitro proofed in 2012.

This gun is beautifully presented in its period oak and leather case.

*Note this gun still retains its full and full chokes allowing the new owner to easily have them opened to any favorite combination. We can arrange for this at no extra charge.

This gun while in some ways plain, has many features to be appreciated. The first I would mention is that it was built by the esteemed maker Harris Holland @ 1876. It was this year that Harris took his nephew Henry Holland on as partner and the name of the business was changed to "Holland & Holland." Henry undoubtedly spent many hours himself building this fine shotgun.

This shotgun features original and nitro proofed barrels and the very ergonomic side lever opening lever. While just border engraved this Holland will perform beautifully in the field with stock dimensions that will fit many.

When you have a beautiful woman in your hands you know it. When you have a beautiful gun in your hands you know it also. This is a beauty. High grade, best made, and between the hands, like that girl, you wont want to let her go!

You may not have heard of Adam's but they are a well known maker in the UK and well respected. It is at a quality of a Purdey hammer double and can be purchased at a fraction of the cost of the Purdey so this is the gun for the hunter that wants quality on the beer budget. Henry Nock made guns for the English nobility, the military, and hunters. Nock later became Wilkinson Sword. I use to shave with a Wilkinson razor! Yes, the same company.

This is a quality gun and very shoot-able being in nice condition. A close examination of the proof marks leads me to believe this gun was built by Wilkinson under the Nock name on or after 1813.

Parker hammer guns that have not been messed with are getting harder to fine, especially ones that would make good field guns with the RST ammunition.

This gun has some pitting in the bores that should be cleaned up. With their massive thickness this should not be a problem. I would recommend putting it properly back on face also.

We can arrange for this work if you would like us to contract the restoration.

16 Gauge English hammer doubles are rare to begin with but to find one by the esteemed John Dickson of Edinburgh is an extra special day.

This little gun is light but spry and handles well. I like the ornamentation on the trigger guard. Someone in the shop asked me what that was for and I said what I believe at least "just for pretty." Pretty is a worth while thing in my book.

You know this wonderful gun is plain as plain can be but I like it. Why? It is well balanced and feels extremely well between the hands.

I do appreciate the side-lever which I find very easy to use and also the original Damascus barrels.

Not all of our guns call to me to take them afield but this one certainly does and it is one of our cheaper guns which goes to show something, more expensive is not always better.

The price reflects a few minor but present pit's in the bores and the rather plain wood and silvers pad. A leather covered pad would certainly dress this girl next door up a bit.

Some pitting the bores but it is possible with some careful barrel work this could be a good shooter again.

The barrels are marked for Leopold Bernard - the father of Damascus barrel making.

Engraving shows some ware but is outstanding. I love the sculpted hammers. For this price it is a great example of pin fire guns and looks great just hanging around the gun room.

Original vintage 28 gauge hammer doubles are as rare as rocking horse shit but low and behold, we have a super one! This gun has no engraving but the makers name but you know what? It does not need engraving to make it one of the most elegant little hammer doubles we have had in years.

The craftsmanship on this petite flower is high and when you handle the gun it is obvious. The listing below is correct, the barrels are 24”. Many, upon reading this listing will say "they are too short" but in person they do not appear short at all as they are in perfect proportion to the action and stocking. Check out the picture with the quarter coin and put things in perspective.

I want to say more about this very special gun but I am at a loss for words except it truly is a sweetheart of little double.

This beautiful Dickson comes to us from one of my favorite hunting buddies. He is downsizing and it is to your benefit as this is a stunning example of what is considered by many to be the most elegant and sexy double guns ever to grace the fields of this earth.

Does anyone remember the old "Black Velvet" whiskey ads? The one with the stunning woman in the black dress? Seeing this gun in the rack brings forth the same response from seeing that ad… …Let me hold you!

I just looked it up in the Dickson book by Dallas and it says it was competed August 13th 1893. The new barrels appear to be by the maker.

Boss & Co. Classic English "BEST" Sidelock at a great price
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge
3508

This is a beautiful example of a Boss. Great dimensions and barrel length, stunning wood, and tons of original remaining case color that make her glow.

Why are we offering this gun at such a super price? To be up front, it is because it is out of proof as the chambers measure 2 3/4" and the gun is proofed for 2 1/2". Like many Boss's ,Purdey’s, and Hollands that have been here in the states a long time, this guns chambers were lengthened to 2 ¾” so it could use the American shells. Now we have access to 2.5” shells here in America (see www.rstshells.com) but ten years ago and earlier there were virtually none so many high end English guns in America then had their chambers lengthened 1/4".”

One could have this gun returned to the UK and reproofed for 2 3/4." This would significantly increase its value but would cost about 1k and would take six months to a year. We can arrange for this.

One could also just keep the gun as is and shoot it the rest of their life using the RST 2.5" shells and make a significant savings.

Boss guns are considered by many the BEST of the BEST and I can find no reason to dispute this.

*We can arrange to have the small stock extension removed and a BEST leather pad installed for only $300.00.

This beautiful Holland sidelock comes in its original makers case. Holland Ledger shows it from November 1 1898. I find this more rare with every passing year. The barrels are in excellent condition and note the modern stock dimensions.

If you need a longer LOP we would be glad to add up to a 1" leather covered pad. The wrist wood on this stock is in very nice condition and quarter sawn so would lend itself to bending if needed.

The stock does have a 1" wood extension before the pad, an extremely well done extension I might add. Look at the pictures and be amazed.

The weight of this gun lends itself to its 2 3/4" nitro proof. This MacNaughton is an excellent value and would be perfect for taking a vintage Scottish gun afield.

This gun has been beautifully and tastefully restored by respected English restoration shop "Heritage Guns." Toby Barkley the owner and craftsman of this fine business made the following notes on this gun:

"This is a superb example of the BEST Birmingham sidelock ejector from this highly respected gunmaker, made in the heyday of the British gun trade. It features one of the best known of the esoteric opening systems that featured on many prestigious gunmaker’ s products of the time: the Powell Patent Lift-Up Toplever, more commonly seen on their beautiful hammerguns, rare in a hammerless sidelock."

I have to say this is a truly beautiful shotgun with some of the most sought after features to be found in a BEST sidelock such as bar action locks, safety sears, Deeley ejectors, and auto safety. Heritage Guns have restored the maker’s case to a very high standard. This is a truly beautiful package and at great price.

This classic Woodward has the elegant arcaded fences that many of us have so come to cherish on the vintage London best guns. Nine pin safety seared locks are beautifully engraved with Rose and scroll.

*Note the "modern" stock dimensions which are great for many. With the 14" of original wood one could add a 1" pad to get up to a 15" LOP. We can arrange for this.

The barrels were sleeved and proofed in England and an excellent job was done. Sleeved sidelocks continue to offer the wing shooter an excellent value. Contrary to some opinion, Sleeved guns do hold their value. The value of the sleeved guns has always followed the market value of their counterpart guns which are in original condition. At 40-50% less cost than an original collector grade gun sleeved guns give the bird hunter an opportunity to hunt with a classic BEST gun at near half the price.

These McCririck shotguns from Scotland are certainly high grade and in excellent condition. This is a super deal on a Scottish sidelock featuring high condition, great wood, barrels, and stock dimensions great for many.

*Note that we could pull the wood butt plate and install a leather covered pad to make this fine shotgun up to a 15" LOP.

Nigel Browns definitive series of books on British, Irish, and Scottish guns "British Gunmakers" mentions on page 159 of volume III that James McCririck opened shop in 1839 and in 1904 split to two shops Ayr, and Kilmarnok. He goes on to state that the Ayr shop was closed at the beginning of WW I , July of 1914.

Our gun was thus built somewhere between those two dates as the rib shows both address’s . Edwardian period guns!

You may have not have heard of this fine gunmaker but they built stunning quality guns. I was very interested to learn they were in business for so long, starting in 1839 and the Kilmarnock shop only closing in 1992, in business 153 years!

A very nice English sidelock by this well known (among the English) maker. Extra's on this gun I see are the Sir Joseph Whitworth steel barrels (same as used on Purdey's) and bushed firing pins.

This gun was built in the year 1896 and one just has to look at a shotgun like this and wonder how they did it. Highest craftsmanship is what turns me on and this gun does that. The action is lightly brushed but not bad and I have to admit the minimal engraving lends itself to its elegant lines. Best of all it handles and balances beautifully. Some buyers tell us they cannot afford a high grade English sidelock and I often tell them if they are patient we can find them a nice sidelock in the boxlock price range. This is one of those guns. Mark this one a bargain.

Great wood and stock dimensions for the upland hunter combined with super lightweight and chokes that will put the food on the table.

Don't let all those positive attributes distract you from the beauty and craftsmanship in this fine sidelock.

Known as "The Gun makers of the West" (Western England of course!) this firm started business in Bristol in 1876 and were still in business in 1964.

A Holland & Holland sidelock for under 10K? Yes! And it is basically a sound gun ready to see the field! In its makers case the gun is tight on face and has good dimensions.

If one wanted to restore the gun it could use new blue on the barrels, a few replacement screws, and a new oil finish. The forend wood could use a few minor repairs.

These climax guns have always been admired for their ergonomic rounded actions and nice balance.

This is a very nice Lancaster featuring the self opening mechanism. It is ready for the field. These guns have received a bum wrap as they have been called "Wrist breakers" as they were supposedly hard to close. When you close these it is cocking the main springs after firing. I find them no harder to close than a Purdey, not a big deal. The secret, as in Purdey's, is knowing how to snap the gun closed. Learn this trick and it is easy. This gun is very high quality at any price.

Although you may not be familiar with the name, Rosson of Norwich is an old and respected gun maker in England.

Great stock dimensions for many combined with a useful choking and excellent wall thickness makes this little and light English sidelock a real find.

I do feel it was when new ( I believe the ninth gun built in 1933) a semi-pistol grip gun and it has since been expertly converted to a straight grip.

What a fabulous little and light 16g. by this premier maker. Which seldom happens, we received this lithe magic wand in its original makers case, numbed to the gun. Really this Holland has it all, balance, stock dimensions, and simple classic elegance. Sometimes we are convinced a fine shotgun has to be covered in engraving and fancy wood to be the best. There are exceptions to every rule and this petite 16 is exceptional.

It is not often we get a high quality English side lock 16g. in our shop so we feel very lucky to have this one. The light (5 lbs. 15 oz.) weight with the 28" nitro proofed steel barrels and the long LOP work perfectly together to result in a extremely well balanced shotgun.

This gun was sleeved in the USA as there are no English proof marks. They did a nice job, the joint is not readily apparent.

I really appreciate the action sculpting on this model with the obvious highest quality engraving. Note the exceptional marble cased French walnut stock with good stock dimensions for many.

The case is very nice, a hand made modern version in the traditional English style.

Stocked to the fences, assisted opening, iconic and crisp Boss single trigger, chopper-lump barrels, and stunning wood with super dimensions, this Boss has all and more of what we would expect from a Boss. What I expect most of all from Boss is what I think is their true trade mark, “Balance.” Let me tell you, get this gun between your hands and you will not want to let it go as you would feel your letting go of a part of yourself.

Twenty gauge Boss doubles are like prime real estate. They seldom come up for sale, are priced at the top of the market, and there are never any regrets in owning as they are always worth what you paid and more. A solid investment at $67000.00

This fine Scottish double has been given a new life with excellent 2 3/4" nitro proofed barrels which were built in England in 1952.

While this fine Ideal grade (pronounced "EE-DEE-ELL") is sound and field ready it does have a fair amount of handling marks in the wood and no case color remaining, thus the very fair price for this grade.

This model features the outstanding rising third bite and is built on the respected and radiused trigger plate action. Using coil main springs the internal hammers virtually never fail to fall. As far as I know these guns were never retailed in the USA.

From 1908 this petite of petite Scottish round actions is super sexy and a joy to hold and swing. 28g. Scottish guns are just never seen so I was almost aghast to find this little beauty.

And it gets better. This investment is to be found in its original makers case. Not just a great investment grade gun this gun also has great dimensions to be used in the field and it is field ready.

This would make a great gift for the Spouse!

You have probably heard me say this before but finding extremely original English guns in high condition is becoming near impossible. The good news is once in a while we get a gun in that is in fantastic original condition. This is one of those guns.

Weighing less than some English 2" guns this gun balances extremely well with a very lively feeling between the hands. The case color is near 90%, the wood finish 90%, the barrel black 80%.

This gun has its original case and hang tag which interestingly enough mentions that the gun was tested with American ammunition. Sold to an American? The original case shows considerable wear but the gun also comes with a Huey style oak & leather case with French fitted tools making an extremely attractive package and a seriously sound investment.

Definable and undeniable are the great stock dimensions for many. The chokes are tight but for $75.00 a tube we can make them anything you would like to order.

Having been lucky enough to see my share of roosters exiting stage left over the farmer’s fence I really appreciate and love this makers trade label. I love it so much I have one framed and hanging in my office.

William Evans "Best" Boxlock ejector with wonderful wood
Boxlocks
12 gauge

William Evans struck out on his own as a gunmaker in London in 1883. We know he worked previously for James Purdey and then 12 years with Holland & Holland. At the turn of the century he was known for offering “BEST” quality boxlock and sidelock guns. Interesting to me is the price in 1900 was the same on either, 49 pounds!

I had wondered what was meant by a "BEST" boxlock as in our general trade a best gun is by part of the definition, a sidelock.

This gun has helped me understand what William Evans was talking about when they would advertise “BEST” boxlocks. I dissembled this gun and found inside many features found on London “BEST” sidelocks including bushed firing pins and double safety sears. Further than these features was a high degree of craftsmanship and internal finish and polishing of all internal parts. Examining the interior design and execution of the Evans "BEST" boxlock it became obvious to me they required a very high degree of skilled labor and they would cost considerably more to produce than the average Birmingham boxlock.

This example, built @ 1909, is simply a beautifully executed shotgun and a perfect example of what William Evans referred to as a “London BEST” boxlock. Typically if you can find one of these they rightfully run in a price range considerably more than the Birmingham boxlocks, usually 5-7K. This example we can offer an excellent price as I have knowledge the butt stock wrist was repaired in the past. The repair was professionally done, invisible, and may last for another 100 years but knowing this information I am compelled to list the gun at a price that if a restock was ever needed the owner would not be underwater in the gun.

Stunning engraving, balance, craftsmanship, and wood, this little beauty has much to offer its future owner.

The is really a nice London gun by a great maker who is still in business. Finished in 1897 you would not know it for its modern dimensions and at least 50% remaining case colors and with barrels with 95% blue or better. I note also it has bushed firing pins, a feature found on higher grade guns like this.

The stock is beautiful and in very nice condition showing no oil soaking, repairs, or cracks.

This is an excellent value and I suspect it will not last long.

Sold by Holland & Holland these boxlocks were made by Webley & Scott. They are the tried and true Anson and Deeley design so are quite rough and tough.

The long length of pull should be an eye catcher for you big guys or we can shorten and even remove the whole stock extension and install a pad.

This gun is nicely engraved with beautiful wood featuring very nice checkered side panels. Anson was a pivotal engineer in what today many of us believe to be the best side by side action design ever built. This gun comes in its rare makers case. A very nice package which includes history and still very functional in the field.

Upland hunters pay attention. This is a very sound, strong, well made English boxlock for a super price. At only 6 lbs. 9 oz. she would be a pleasure to carry all day. Better than to just carry, this little gun was built to swing on flighting birds. She balances just forward of the hinge pin on the iron resulting in an ever so light barrel weight forward... ...what many of us consider the perfect gun balance. Note the gun is cased in a vintage but solid English canvas case with trade label, cleaning rod, and cleaning ends, and snap caps.

Did you read the great article recently in "The Double Gun Journal" on T. Page Wood? It gave them excellent reviews and history......

Good stock dimensions on this solid English double. Left choke is a bit tight for my liking as I like to eat my taken game. I am not big on lead poisoning. :)

We can open this choke for only $75.00 and get it done in only a few days normally. Need a longer LOP? We can add a pad for you.

This would make an excellent introduction to an English doubles at an extremely fair price.

German gunsmith Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse beginning in 1824, after conducted multiple experiments in 1836 produced the first complete center fire gun. This gun won the NRA Foundation trophy at the Celebration of Fine Guns in San Francisco.

As far as I know Manufrance Ideals were never retailed here in the USA but thankfully a few have been brought back by soldiers and sportsman over the years.

*Note that these Ideal guns have besides the classic Purdey patent double under bite a rising third bite similar to the classic and coveted Rigby patent.

While this fine Ideal grade (pronounced "EE-DEE-ELL") is sound and field ready it does have a fair amount of handling marks in the wood and no case color remaining, thus the very fair price for this grade.

Do you like French wine and food like me? If so you might consider a classic French double. The Manufrance "Ideal" with its amazing rising bite is a great choice.

Nicely restocked with good dimensions, great wall thickness, and solid chokes, this true trigger plate round action has a lot to offer. There is very light pitting in the bores which could easily be removed (or left). Featuring the classic "eye glass" trigger guard and nice long 29" chopper lump barrels. I love how these guns open by pulling back on the lever behind the trigger guard which is very ergonomic.

If you know me, you will know I love these guns. Give me a call and I would be glad to let you know why.

Very pretty wood (a restock) on this little Ideal with nice long barrels. This grade does not feature the rising bite featured on some higher grade Ideal guns but it does have the classic double under-bite with the true trigger plate action. I see some epoxy bedding material in places where the wood meets the action but this will not in anyway affect performance and allows us to sell this gun at a much reduced price.

There is some light pitting in the bores which could be removed but if it were me I would take this light lady afield just as she is and enjoy her doing what she does best.

This is an extremely nice little 20g. with elegantly long barrels and great stock dimensions. Just border engraved for the most part but there is a substantial amount of attractive case hardening on the action. The wood is very sound and has some wonderful fiddle back.

Pay attention my valued customers, this petite flower has great stock dimensions for many. If I were to hunt with it I would pay the $75.00 and have us open up the left barrel to Mod or IC to make a phenomenal quail or upland bird magic wand.

This post war Sauer completed and passed proof in October of 1962. As you can see from the pictures this gun has seen very little use and in almost new condition. I see one little area of discoloration near the rib a few inches from the muzzle on the left barrel. This is super minor and hard to notice.

Compared to our English 20g. doubles this AYA is quite heavy but then again we do not have any English 20g doubles for 1100.00!

AYA guns have proved strong and reliable. Note this has a single trigger, auto ejectors, and 3" proofed chambers. We have tested the single trigger and it seems to work just fine.

I have owned a couple of 24 gauge guns over the years and have always enjoyed this gauge. It has been continuously loaded by Fiocchi and is now loaded by RST ( see www.rstshells.com and call them also as they are not yet in the catalog ).

This is the first 24 gauge shotgun I have ever encountered by an English maker. The barrels while stating the standard Birmingham name and address on the left barrel, feature on the right barrel : "Unico Agent, Jaun Canedo Riv Adavia. 611. Buenos Aires." This obviously indicates this gun was built and retailed for the South American market, a very rare thing indeed for an English gun.

I put a couple of box's through this gun on clays and I shot it very well. This is saying something as most of you know I am a lousy shot!

Proofed in August of 1963 this well made gun has excellent bores and is very tight. The double under bite lockup also has the double Kirsten barrel extensions that Merkel is famous for on its higher grade guns. The 6.5x57R round is one of my favorites as it is low recoil and fast and accurate. Based on the 8mm Mauser case this round can be purchased or easily reloaded. It is similar to the 257 Roberts but was invented by the Germans at least 20 years earlier!

This would make an excellent working rifle to take to Africa. Notice the extra heavy reinforced barrels and the 10 lbs. 8 oz. weight. The gun is very well made and features disk set strikers, large double under lugs and Greener style cross bolt safety third bite. Our double rifle gunsmith Ken Owen checked the regulation and supplied the load given on the target shown here. A great shooting large bore English double rifle.

Lyon & Lyon sold British made rifles in London and Calcutta India. They were an outfitter for the sportsman bound out of London to the far parts of the British Empire. Charles Osborne built most of their guns and this is an excellent example. On the underside of the forend is the logo of a harpoon gun, the Charles Osborne logo. Featuring auto ejectors, bushed firing pins, dolls head with 3rd bite rib extension, and full sidelocks, this was a very nice gun in it day. The Bores on this rifle are excellent and the accuracy exceptional for a double rifle featuring four shots in 1'! See target and load provide. This rifle deserves to be in the field again soon, on the hunt for game. Are you the person to put it to its task?

Bore has some very light pitting in places but over all very bright with sharp rifling. We are unsure of case length. Stock is loose on action so I suspect an internal crack that needs repairing. We can do this here.

Winchester Model 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine in Classic 30-30 ~ If there is still some cowboy within you this will bring it out! SALE!

A nice bore on this saddle ring carbine. There is a small slip of wood missing in the stock on the left side of the receiver. The front site is obviously not original but effective. This 1894 dates from 1898.

Growing up here in the west we grew up as boys with plastic cap rifles modeled after this classic and I at that point dreamed of owning the real "McCoy." I did get one before I was 21 and kept it many years but then let it go when I realized it was not seeing a lot of use.

If you never had one and always wanted one here is the real cowboy rifle, meant to be carried horse back and ride the range!

Turnbull restoration informed me they can install the correct sights.

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge
1158
This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

T. Murcott 10g. top lever hammer of high quality and ready for restoration ~ 36" barrels!

This has been rather amateur stocked at least in the butt. The hidden sling is missing and needs a butt plate or pad. The barrels show some pitting but I believe would clean up as you could remove .005 from each and they should be clean. The top two tang screws need replacing. This was a project I never got too and worthy . I am open to trades.:)

You may not have heard of Adam's but they are a well known maker in the UK and well respected. It is at a quality of a Purdey hammer double and can be purchased at a fraction of the cost of the Purdey so this is the gun for the hunter that wants quality on the beer budget.
