This is a class act. If this said Purdey on it the price would be double but the craftsmanship and condition would be the same. Henry actually worked for Purdey's before he hung his shingle. The gun is tight, in proof, and ready for the field! The bar in wood shotguns were some of the most expensive guns the London makers made during the Edwardian era. The gun is a joy to hold, balances super and the hammer pulls are like butter!

What a nice pair of very shootable hammer doubles from this famous maker. They come in a wonderful pair vintage solid oak case. Number 1 gun has British sleeved barrels and number two gun has replacement steel barrels also done in England. The open barrels would be death on quail under most conditions while the other set would be great for just about every other upland bird. I note that these guns handle very well and have BEST quality locks. Consignor says sell together or buy just one for 4900.00.

This is a very solid and well made English hammer 12. The barrels are in excellent condition with 98% blue. The wall thickness is fantastic. We can add a leather covered pad for $300.00 to make this gun have a 14 1/2" length of pull. Very pretty wood and super smooth hammer pulls. I really enjoy hunting with a hammer gun. See my picture here of two hunns and a pheasant both shot with my 16g. Damascus hammer double only two days ago in Eastern Oregon.

Kirby has actually shot at ducks in England with this gun, not sure what ended up in the pot though? Gary wrote that. Kirby here. I did shoot many ducks with this with my friend Peter and he will attest I hit my share. Was a fun time. They called it night flighting..... At dusk we gathered at a little pond on a farm, they called it a "splash." Sure enough as the sky darkened the ducks would come in and land right in front of us!

Leopold Bernard Damascus. One of our true fathers of Damascus barrel makers! See this gun just for fun with barrels by Bernard... ... http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/24957 While faded, the name La Page still reads in the green wool felt of this original case with original tools. The gun while plain of engraving is of absolute high quality with exquisite hammers. A rare find and I hate to sell this but I cannot keep all my favorites. Note that the original case has a slight dome to it! Bores have some pitting but a very shootable and collectible pinfire.

This would make a fun snake or vermin shotgun or to line back to a rook rifle of which it was originally. We have had this done to .32 S&W and it came out great.

The beautiful Damascus barrel by itself weighs 8 lbs. 14.5 oz and is 1 5/8" wide at the breech! The full Length is 57” (near five feet!). This is a quality behemoth with a presence to say it with British subtlety. First gun we have ever had from the Isle of Wight, a perfect island located between England and France for water-fowling. Bore is near perfect. Like quality but something different? You have found it.

Block-Safety hammerless, clean and bold Damascus barrels. Great condition for being built in 1887. I love this Damascus pattern and the 60% or better case hardening on this gun. The matron has not seen a lot of use, almost virginal. I would love to see what kind of patterns this gun would throw.

Purdey from 1897 with Stunning Fences and excellent barrels! Extra 28" barrel set by the
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge

Purdey records show this fine shotgun to be completed in 1897 for A.J. Drexel. This would lead one to believe this was for well known banker and partner of JP Morgan, Anthony Joseph Drexel but looking up his history I found he died in 1893, four years before this gun was completed. He did have a son by the same name born in 1887 but he would be ten years old when this gun was built. Could it be at age 10 he was ordered a bespoke Purdey? Regardless, this gun needs no pedigree as it stands alone and radiates its craftsmanship and beauty 117 years after it was completed. I am enamored with the deep chiseled fences! The gun comes with a second barrel set that Purdey indicates were made for the gun in 1971. Both Barrel sets are in fantastic condition.

Charles Boswell BEST SLE with magnificent game scenes @ 1901!
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge
2867
14507
For many of my clientele and myself this gun would epitomize the quality and art of gun making that peaked during the reign of King Edward the VII (1901 until 1910). The Game scenes engraved on this gun are way ahead of their time with dogs that look like dogs, birds that look like birds, all with little resemblance to other gunmakers game scenes of the era where the animals resemble cartoon characters. Stunning Damascus barrels with elegant smoky wood perfectly complement the engraving on this well balanced and well appointed game gun. Interesting that it is noted on the rib that the gun was "remodeled" by the English gun maker William Ford. In this context I believe this to mean it was restored to as new and they certainly did excellent work.

Stephen Grant Sidelock 12g. ejector with the coveted side-lever. These Grant side-lever guns are highly desirable and it only takes handling one to know why. One word “ergonomic” would sum this gun up but it is so much more… …elegant, sexy, exiting, and lively! One could spend over 100k and not have a gun thisIt is No. 1 of pair. Existing records tell us the two guns were completed on the 15th June 1921 for Captain D E Wallace of Houston, Texas. Both guns are entered as being 12 bore with 29” barrels. In February 1928 both guns were refitted with 29” Whitworth Steel barrels. They were reproofed at 2 ¾ “ in place of the originals. wonderful .

It would be hard not to fall in love with the deep chisel leaf fences on this classic Purdey. This is an outstanding and well balanced sidelock once owned by one of America's premier outdoor writers, dog man, and upland hunter. The quality level of this gun showcases the era of what the English London gun trade was capable of during the Edwardian era @ 1898. It is with educated bias that I maintain this was the finest period of gun making the world has ever known.

This would make a very versatile vintage gun excellent for sporting clays, pheasants, and waterfowel. With the open choked barrels skeet and upland hunting for quail, woodcock, grouse etc.. It is possible the open choked barrels could be used with steel for hunting in no lead hunting areas. This gun built in 1893 can be shipped direct to you in most states.

A very nice English sidelock by this well known (among the English) maker. Extra's on this gun I see are the Sir Joseph Whitworth steel barrels (same as used on Purdey's) and bushed firing pins.

A very solid side lock in very nice condition with quail or grouse chokes. This gun should be a joy to use! There is still some case hardening on the locks showing this gun was cared for with not a lot of use. A super value in an English sidelock by a maker with a wonderful history. Built between 1893 and 1894!

Charles Smith
Hammerless Sidelocks

So many of the quality gun makers names have been lost with time and this gun by Charles Smith gives us a direct connection with a smaller maker that very little is known but where the quality shows through. Nigel Brown's Book on British Gunmakers Volume III lists this as a Newark England maker. The gun retains considerable amount of case color on the beautifully engraved locks. I might mention the locks are high quality also with safety sears. This is a real value in an English sidelock.

These Prussian built Sauer side locks are very high quality. This one has been expertly spliced in the pistol grip to bend up the drop measurements to modern dimension. J.P. Sauer Grade 40 - High grade Sauer in superb original condition
Boxlocks

The Sauer grade 40 pre WWI shotguns like this one have been one of my favorite of the Prussian guns. They exemplify the quality in design, craftsmanship, and art that this famous German gun maker was capable of. This gun is especially exemplary as it is in wonderful original condition. I can determine it has had no work done to it since its first sale. The chokes, the bore diameter, the blue, the wood finish are all original and excellent. The pad may or may not be as sold as these guns were offered with these types of pads.

German prewar quality gun with no makers name, high grade engraving and stock work!

This German gun has great full coverage engraving, side clips, cocking indicators, and extra grade wood work. Ivory inlays on the forend and drop points are a nice touch. I notice an ever so slight bulge behind the left choke only noticeable to a professional and should not be of concern. With a re-blue this could be removed.

Horton is one of my favorite makers. I have an original Horton label framed here in my shop. This gun excels in its Scottish features of a unique scalloped action and high grade wood. Manufrance Ideal guns as some of you may well know have been a special interest of mine for many years. This is a very light 12 with very interesting fine engraving on the rib. J.P. Sauer Grade 17 - A worthy project gun ....
Boxlocks
12 gauge

Medium deep pitting in both bores. One significant dent in the right barrel 4 3/4" from the muzzle on the right barrel. Gun is off face and needs rejoining. Chequering is gone in places, would need full re-cut in a restoration. Keep in mind this is a true Prussian round top Sauer and it features the long action table. Good news is that the barrels will probably clean up with a back boring as they have excellent thick walls.

This gun is tight with great bores and ready for the field. Barrels ring like chimes and have great wall thickness. She carries her share of bruises and scrapes from a sporting life in the field but these do nothing to suppress her enthusiasm to be afield again. A great entry level shotgun for a first time SxS upland double gunner. Let this experienced mature French madame get you hooked on the double gun life! * You will see on the left barrel a stamp that says "Sauer." This for some unknown reason was added at some point in her history. This fine french shotgun is not a Sauer showing clear Saint Etienne French proofs.

J.P. Sauer grade 40 in need of healing hands...
Boxlocks

This gun is a needy child but the original high grade quality might inspire! Bores are pitted fairly badly. Stock is a poor restock and has terrible dimensions anyway so could be used as a pattern to modify for a restock. Ejectors work fine, trigger pulls are ok. Some person we would like to incarcerate and castrate with my lawn mower buffed all the detail from the engraving so it would all need re-cutting as well as new screws. It is possible with a re-proof the gun could be used as is for a classic pick-up rack gun.

Proofed in August of 1963 this well made gun has excellent bores and is very tight. The double under bite lockup also has the double Kirsten barrel extensions that Merkel is famous for on its higher grade guns. The 6.5x57R round is one of my favorites as it is low recoil and fast and accurate. Based on the 8mm Mauser case this round can be purchased or easily reloaded. It is similar to the 257 Roberts but was invented by the Germans at least 20 years earlier!

Nitro proofed for 2 3/4" nitro 20 gauge this lovely rifle could be used as a smooth bore rifle (with the correct load) or a shotgun. What a combo!

This is an extremely well made double rifle with super bright and sharp rifling cut in Excelsior Witten steel barrels. Inlet peep sight, claw bases, bushed firing pins, set triggers for some of its high grade features. Action built on a high grade trigger plate action. Some minor external pitting in places on the action makes this rifle very affordable and should be a joy to hunt with in the field. The makers name on the rib is "Carl Stiegele" from Munich. New pictures soon as we are glass bedding the scalloped action which will make it look much better and stronger on recoil.

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge
1158
This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

This soft bound book is about the history and development of the Manufrance Ideal model round action trigger plate shotguns and rifles with many pictures and diagrams and the coveted serial number to date chart. We imported four of these from France. I am keeping one so we have three for sale. Yes, all the print is in French but I find with the charts, photographs and appendices the book very useful even if one does not understand a lot of French. I have a passion for these guns as they are so well made and designed but also beautiful to hold and to look at. Like a beautiful woman! :)

I know the price seems high but these were not inexpensive to us and the only book on the subject we are aware of so we paid the price.

Nice Damascus brown on these barrels. The wrist has been well repaired with epoxy and seems very strong. A little checkering and cosmetics could make this a nice looking gun. The bores are fairly bright with a light frost but have numerous dings and one dent that should be removed.

A solid boxlock and very well made but in need of a rejoin. We can arrange this for $300.00. There are a couple of small dings forward in the right barrel and one removed one in the left. I have had these guns apart and am always impressed in how high quality and hand fitted and polished the mechanics are.

Ever so slightly off face but usable as is. Stock is sound but with some minor repairs. Some light pitting but plenty of wall thickness. I detect a very repairable crack (not through) in the wrist which should be attended to soon.

A nice little 16 that someone refinished with a modern clear finish. It would look so much better with a London oil finish! I like this little gun. There are three or four very small dings in the barrels which we could remove but fore this price the gun is as is.

Interesting design and will entice one to collect a limit (South Dakota three bird) on the first rise. The barrels are 30" and the gun balances like a dream and it only weighs 6 lbs. 14 oz., I do not know how they did it! Helium in the stock?

Dart is priceless and covers the dog and bird hunting aspects of Vintagedoubles. He is our hero in the field, being an incredible pointer with the best nose of any dog I have ever hunted over. We seem to have a problem keeping him off the kitchen counters if there are any tasty morsels left there.... ....No one is perfect!

It would be hard not to fall in love with the deep chisel leaf fences on this classic Purdey. This gun would make an excellent field gun for those rough conditions or rainy days you do not want to take your collectible grade Purdey or Boss out. The bores are bright but there is some light pitting in places on this gun which allows us to sell this gun at a very attractive price.
