Another one for the book! The lever forward of the guard pulls down and slides the barrel forward. Ingenious and effective! Barrels are Leopold Bernard Damascus. 10 gauge nitro proofed hammer guns are rather hard for us to come by. In 1902 when built this waterfowl double was probably entry level so it does not catch the eye with fancy engraving and wood. What this veteran has to offer is great stock dimensions, proofs, weight, and choke. I would not be afraid to take this old man into the duck blind for that is where he was always intended to be.

James Purdey Hammer 12 in its makers case ~ and a two barrel set to boot! A very rare find.
Hammerguns
12 gauge

8794

The Island lock Purdey hammer shotgun is considered by many to be the most elegant and ergonomic shotgun ever offered. Lord Ripon, England's most famous shot, found these hammer Purdey's to be his shotgun of choice. He used three to set the record of 28 pheasants shot in less than one minute! For those unfamiliar with what an Island lock shotgun is about, note in the pictures that the lock is completely surrounded by wood, thus making the lock an Island in wood. This was copied by a few other makers but has always been considered a signature of James Purdey hammer guns.

The gun we offer here is a very nice example and is exceptionally rare as it is a two barrel set and still to be found in its original oak and leather case. We have had many hammer Purdey's over the years and this is the only one we have ever had like this.

I have handled this shotgun for the last few days and I have to say it is a pleasure to swing, having exceptional balance and momentum for its very light weight.

If a person were to own just one hammer gun this fine shotgun would be at the top of the a very short list of true classics to choose from.

This behemoth double rifle I have shot and it shoots extremely well! I hit every beer can I aimed at.

William Smith was a gun and rifle maker at 110 Lancaster Street Birmingham England from 1846-1890. Forty four years a gun maker he certainly was established.

This is rifled full length and the rifling is strong with only some light pitting in places. Ready to hunt with now but with a little detail restoration could be a show piece.

Thomas Horsley hammer 12 with classic and desirable sidelever ~
Hammerguns
12 gauge

Known as the "The Gunmaker of York” Thomas Horsley guns are highly respected. Thomas Horsley was an innovator and successful entrepreneur at the dawning of the breech loading gun trade in England. They remained in business from 1833 to the 1950's

This shotgun is the first year production in 1861 and was certainly a pin fire at that point. On the rib of the barrel is inscribed "Converted by John Wilkes Leeds" which tells us it was converted from pin fire to center fire by this well-known gunmaker. Converting a pin fire gun to center fire was no small job so in general only the high quality guns were converted. They did the job so well I cannot tell it was even done!

Beautifully restored this Horsley is ready to see time afield once again.

This Thomas Reeves is a fantastic high grade English hammer double in really beautiful condition. Thomas Reeves lists in his ads that he worked for Westley Richards, the esteemed English gun maker. The amount of original case hardening and original wood finish is outstanding as is the quality and condition of the lock work. I really appreciate the marble cake figured English walnut and how the craftsman detailed the heel and toe plates. Please examine the pictures closely as you will see the craftsmanship is off the scale. If this said James Purdey on the gun we would be asking 25000.00 dollars….

In 1840 the the Penny Black stamp was issued. This was the first stamp in the world. People wrote a lot of letters at this time, as this was the only way to communicate over long distances, yes, no email! This was the year that this Boss graced the hill and dale of England. Good walls make this elegant old man a great shooter for the field and I am sure will swing with the confidence that 160 years of experience will bring.

What a tre' cool gun! The snap action push forward underlever has a round horn knob that is super ergonomic, the easiest opening forward underlever I have ever used. The barrels passed 2 3/4" nitro proof and I can see why as they are massively thick. The last owner had Briley install choke tubes, while making the gun not a collectible anymore, added to its versatility. We are offering at a very attractive price taking all this into account. This would make a fabulous field gun for the first time or experienced hammer gun hunter or sporting clay shooter.

Kirby has actually shot at ducks in England with this gun, not sure what ended up in the pot though?

Gary wrote that. Kirby here. I did shoot many ducks with this with my friend Peter and he will attest I hit my share. Was a fun time. They called it night flighting..... At dusk we gathered at a little pond on a farm, they called it a "splash." Sure enough as the sky darkened the ducks would come in and land right in front of us!

This gun is in proof and sound to shoot but up front it is pretty rough to look at. The forend has seen some heavy use and has multiple dings and some chips. The sleeving line is showing. If someone wanted to restore it the gun could be made to appear much nicer as it may be worth it as it does shoot very well.

If you have ever handled a William Evans of London (formerly of Purdey’s) shotgun then you have perhaps handled an E.C. Green shotgun as this maker was known for making guns for that famous London gun emporium. In the English gun trade Mr. Green was known for making guns of very high quality and this little 16g. is no exception.

Beautiful nitro proofed Damascus barrels and an extremely well done full restoration make this little 16 a keeper. I forgot to mention the hammer pulls are fantastic! William Evans formerly of James Purdey built by E.C. Green . Wow. I want to add “And the house that Jack built” at the end of the line!

See this gun just for fun with barrels by Bernard... ... http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/24957 While faded, the name La Page still reads in the green wool felt of this original case with original tools. The gun while plain of engraving is of absolute high quality with exquisite hammers. A rare find and I hate to sell this but I cannot keep all my favorites. Note that the original case has a slight dome to it! Bores have some pitting but a very shootable and collectible pinfire.
