The beautiful Damascus barrel by itself weighs 8 lbs. 14.5 oz and is 1 5/8" wide at the breech! The full Length is 57” (near five feet!). This is a quality behemoth with a presence to say it with British subtlety. First gun we have ever had from the Isle of Wight, a perfect island located between England and France for water-fowling. Bore is near perfect. Like quality but something different? You have found it.

Exquisite marriage of metal and wood featuring the vault tight Jones under lever lock up. I really like the way Purdey so ornately incorporated the Jones lever to also be the trigger guard . Stephen Grant with desirable and ergonomic side lever in its makers case and nitro proofed! Own a London Best Hammer Gun!
Hammerguns
12 gauge

You may not know that Stephen Grant was a managing partner in Boss & Co., to this day, one of the most respected gun makers in the world. 1867 brought the world many historical events, The United States purchased Alaska from Russia, Wilbur Wright was born, Alfred Noble invented dynamite, and to the point here, Stephen Grant left Boss & Co. and opens his own gun business in the highly touted gun center of the world, St. James street , London, England. Quickly known for long guns of the highest quality the firm became renowned for the use of the side lever opening action which is still extremely popular today.

This Grant has excellent barrels which have good walls and are in 2 3/4" nitro proof. The dimensions are excellent and the gun balances as one would expect, with ease and fluidity. I particularly like the chokes which are perfect for hunting any of the upland game in North America. The makers’ case contains its oil bottle, snap caps, cleaning rod with their jags. This fine shotgun is an excellent investment which can be and rightfully enjoyed in the field.

In 1840 the the Penny Black stamp was issued. This was the first stamp in the world. People wrote a lot of letters at this time, as this was the only way to communicate over long distances, yes, no email! This was the year that this Boss graced the hill and dale of England. Good walls make this elegant old man a great shooter for the field and I am sure will swing with the confidence that 160 years of experience will bring.

Kirby has actually shot at ducks in England with this gun, not sure what ended up in the pot though? Gary wrote that. Kirby here. I did shoot many ducks with this with my friend Peter and he will attest I hit my share. Was a fun time. They called it night flighting..... At dusk we gathered at a little pond on a farm, they called it a "splash." Sure enough as the sky darkened the ducks would come in and land right in front of us!

Leopold Bernard Damascus. One of our true fathers of Damascus barrel makers! See this gun just for fun with barrels by Bernard... ... http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/24957 While faded, the name La Page still reads in the green wool felt of this original case with original tools. The gun while plain of engraving is of absolute high quality with exquisite hammers. A rare find and I hate to sell this but I cannot keep all my favorites. Note that the original case has a slight dome to it! Bores have some pitting but a very shootable and collectible pinfire.

Boss & Co. Best Quality and extremely rare self opening London sidelock
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge
3112
8355

This Boss was built between the wars and is one of only 56 ever made as a true self opener. Having excellent original wall thickness and dimensions this fine Boss correctly and elegantly represents what is considered the paragon of British gun making, the Boss BEST sidelock ejector. This Boss comes in a correct VC (stands for Very Compact) motor case and is truly ready for the field and to be appreciated by its new owner.

Note that with a single trigger the rule of thumb is one can subtract 1/2" from the LOP used for a person normally using double triggers. In this case this gun would fit a shooter perfectly that likes a 14 5/8" LOP. Keep in mind also we can fit a highest quality leather covered pad for only $300.00 and about ten days time. This could get the LOP for someone who needs up to near 15 1/2".

I have three favorite vintage gun makers, Boss, Fauré Le Page, and James Woodward. Woodward built a little over 7000 guns before they were purchased by Purdey in 1949. What is interesting is that over 5000 of these were built before 1900. The James Woodward shotguns from this period are absolutely of the highest quality and exude what we have come to expect in a "BEST" London gun. This pair from ~ 1890 has excellent chopper lump Sir Joseph Whitworth barrels and super stock dimensions. The leather cheek pads appear original and are in very good condition. I like how they feel. I cant keep all the guns that come in the shop that I fall in love with but to let these go is painful....... Price is for the pair and is a bargain. See item # 2993 to look over the number 2 gun.

This is a very nice example of what James Purdey could produce. Built in the middle of the Edwardian period around 1906, this gun exemplifies the quality of the highest craftsmanship Purdey ever achieved. There is much debate on this, with many favoring their guns built between the wars, but I will stand my ground on these guns built before WWI. Retaining 40% original case hardening and over 90% barrel blue, this gun is in excellent condition. The original 2 3/4" proof and the heavier weight indicate an intended use of heavier loads and reduced felt recoil making this an excellent choice for sporting clay's, live pigeons, or wild birds in the field.

A. Venables & Sons of Oxford High grade matched pair for a give away price considering what your getting............
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge
3085
2723

A. Venables of Oxford is an old and well respected English gun maker family that was in business for 139 years. Established in 1846 and they were in Business in Oxford until 1985. This matched pair was made to the highest standards and are in excellent condition. Features include the Purdey style hidden third bite and some of the highest quality rose and scroll engraving I have ever seen. These guns come with their original oak & leather case. It is so hard in these times to find guns in their original case.

Researching what records we have it appears these fine guns were built between the wars in the mid 1930's. Price is for the pair and really if you know what your looking at the price would be sound even just for one! See the number two gun in the following listing or put our number 3086 in our search engine

James Woodward & Sons. 12 ga with their classic forward under lever
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge
2993
4369
I have three favorite vintage gun makers, Boss, Fauré Le Page, and James Woodward. Woodward built a little over 7000 guns before they were purchased by Purdey in 1949. What is interesting is that over 5000 of these were built before 1900. The James Woodward shotguns from this period are absolutely of the highest quality and exude what we have come to expect in a "BEST" London gun. ~ 1890 has excellent chopper lump Sir Joseph Whitworth barrels and super stock dimensions. The leather cheek pads appear original and are in very good condition. I like how they feel. I cant keep all the guns that come in the shop that I fall in love with but to let these go is painful.......

Charles Boswell BEST SLE with magnificent game scenes @ 1901!
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge
2867
14507
For many of my clientele and myself this gun would epitomize the quality and art of gun making that peaked during the reign of King Edward the VII (1901 until 1910). The Game scenes engraved on this gun are way ahead of their time with dogs that look like dogs, birds that look like birds, all with little resemblance to other gunmakers game scenes of the era where the animals resemble cartoon characters. Stunning Damascus barrels with elegant smoky wood perfectly complement the engraving on this well balanced and well appointed game gun. Interesting that it is noted on the rib that the gun was "remodeled" by the English gun maker William Ford. In this context I believe this to mean it was restored to as new and they certainly did excellent work.

It would be hard not to fall in love with the deep chisel leaf fences on this classic Purdey. This gun would make an excellent field gun for those rough conditions or rainy days you do not want to take your collectible grade Purdey or Boss out. The bores are bright but there is some light pitting in places on this gun which allows us to sell this gun at a very attractive price.

This is an outstanding and well balanced sidelock once owned by one of America's premier outdoor writers, dog man, and upland hunter. The quality level of this gun showcases the era of what the English London gun trade was capable of during the Edwardian era @ 1898. It is with educated bias that I maintain this was the finest period of gun making the world has ever known.

James Woodward & Sons. 12 ga with their classic forward under lever at a super price
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge

3751

This little beauty dates from 1879 and unlike us humans is still as beautiful now as on the day she was delivered. I have been hunting the last two years with a push forward under lever and I have to say I like this action very much. This gun has exceptional sexy dark marble cake English walnut. If you need a longer length of pull we can easily add a London style leather covered pad to get a LOP up to 15."

The history of Woodward is long and full of only positive achievements. While they built less than 7200 guns to the present day it is interesting to note that over 5200 of these guns were built before 1898. James Purdey now owns the records and the building rights.

This is a very nice Lancaster featuring the self opening mechanism. It is ready for the field. These guns have received a bum wrap as they have been called "Wrist breakers" as they were supposedly hard to close. When you close these it is cocking the main springs after firing. I find them no harder to close than a Purdey, not a big deal. The secret, as in Purdey's, is knowing how to snap the gun closed. Learn this trick and it is easy. This gun is very high quality at any price.

So many of the quality gun makers names have been lost with time and this gun by Charles Smith gives us a direct connection with a smaller maker that very little is known but where the quality shows through. Nigel Brown's Book on British Gunmakers Volume III lists this as a Newark England maker. The gun retains considerable amount of case color on the beautifully engraved locks. I might mention the locks are high quality also with safety sears. This is a real value in an English sidelock.

Manhattan Arms Sidelock built by JP Sauer, early Prussian gun

These Prussian built Sauer side locks are very high quality. This one has been expertly spliced in the pistol grip to bend up the drop measurements to modern dimension. The bore does have some light pitting but overall bright. Barrels are possibly reduced in length but the they are filed together at the muzzle if done, it was not much.

Nice Damascus brown on these barrels. The wrist has been well repaired with epoxy and seems very strong. A little checkering and cosmetics could make this a nice looking gun. The bores are fairly bright with a light frost but have numerous dings and one dent that should be removed.

Finding 16g. nitro proofed English guns with 30" barrels has been like trying to find rocking horse poop. Well, maybe not that bad but they have been so hard to find of late. I am a 16 gauge fan as most of you know and I have to say I do love these long barrels that swing for us so well. This gun is not fancy but is very well made and the barrels are in excellent condition.

James Woodward 20g. Sidelock ejector with 26” steel barrels. Tons of case color on the locks and beautiful wood with excellent and long dimensions. These prewar 20g. over and under’ s are ever so rare and extremely sought after as they are known for their magic wand quality. Delivered to Abercrombie and Fitch NY on the 29th Dec 1929, the most sought after vintage of British BEST guns. If this Woodward 20g. is a magic wand it was possessed by Merlin.

I find that many look at guns of this type and price and cannot justify the cost but then will go out and buy a new car at this price point and in ten years that car is worth almost nothing. Invest and enjoy a beauty like this little 20 and in ten years it will be worth considerably more than the price, not less or nothing like their 10 year old car. Take this opportunity to make a solid investment while allowing you to own and enjoy what many connoisseurs consider to be the paragon of all shotguns.

This gun was imported to America by our friends at William Larkin & Moore. They record this as a KING 1 model. This little 20 is of the highest quality. While it is known that I prefer pre WWII guns I find as I handle this gun it is hard to put down. Built like a Swiss watch and feels so wonderful between the hands. Excellent stock work and metal work I cannot fault but only find praise.

This is a very unique British 28g. featuring 30" barrels. There is some very light pitting in the bores that could be easily removed with a light back bore. Finding vintage Damascus 28g. shotguns from England is as rare as "Rocking Horse shit" (as my English friends are so fond of saying). While this gun does not resemble any kind of dropping from a horse, it is a rarity and quite fun to handle.

Westley Richards The iconic inventor and first large scale producer of the English boxlock - in its makers case!
Boxlocks
12 gauge
3073
5666

What do Andrew Jackson and the Battle of New Orleans have in common with the venerable firm of Westley Richards? In June of 1812 America declared war on Britain and it was also the year that Westley Richards was founded in Birmingham England. To help kick off their start, Westley Richards was contracted by the British government to build double barreled muzzle loading pistols to be provided to cavalry officers who were to fight the Americans. It is Entirely possible that Andrew Jackson was narrowly missed by shots from a Westley Richards double barrel pistol!

In more specific relation to this fine shotgun we present before you I also want to note the importance of Westley Richards in the development of the double barrel shotgun as we know it today. Westley Richards employed two gunmakers, John Deeley and W. Anson. The day these men were hired should be celebrated as these two men together developed at least 17 patents the most notable to be credited with the development of the Anson & Deeley boxlock, the action we present before you in this listing. This action almost unarguably was to become the most reliable and used hammerless double barrel design in the world and it remains in much use today. I have dismantled and cleaned hundreds of these actions and it never fails to impress me how simple and with how few many working parts are within. Great design makes me want to cheer whether invented 2000 years, 100 years, or today.

Ok, I diverged. This fine example was built in 1880 and is in excellent condition. The barrels with bright bores are fit tight to the breech. The top lever features the classic Westley Richards patent rib extension with a bite. I envy the next owner of this gun as he or she takes it afield. In a quiet moment while the dog sips the water from the hat, I can see looking down on this fine piece of history, feeling its spirit, still deadly, still steadfast reliable, and always elegant. This Westley comes in its vintage maker's case with cleaning rod, oil bottle, and cleaning jags.

This gun is nicely engraved with beautiful wood featuring very nice checkered side panels. Anson was a pivotal engineer in what today many of us believe to be the best side by side action design ever built. This gun comes in its rare makers case. A very nice package which includes history and still very functional in the field.

Sir Joseph Whitworth steel! In its original makers case! Anson is quite famous as he gave us the boxlock gun we know today. Westley Richards held his invention patents so it is quite rare to see his design with his name on it. Own a wonderful part of double gun history while being able to use it quite effectively in the field.

Manufrance Ideal guns as some of you may well know have been a special interest of mine for many years. This is a very light 12 with very interesting fine engraving on the rib. The original retractable sling is in good condition. I have shown a picture of the rising third bite (similar to the Rigby) which is one of the many things I love about these guns, that and being an affordable true round trigger plate action!

Upland hunters pay attention. This is a very sound, strong, well made English boxlock for a super price. At only 6 lbs. 9 oz. she would be a pleasure to carry all day. Better than to just carry, this little gun was built to swing on flighting birds. She balances just forward of the hinge pin on the iron resulting in an ever so light barrel weight forward... ...what many of us consider the perfect gun balance. Note the gun is cased in a vintage but solid English canvas case with trade label, cleaning rod, and cleaning ends, and snap caps.

Medium deep pitting in both bores. One significant dent in the right barrel 4 3/4" from the muzzle on the right barrel. Gun is off face and needs rejoining. Chequering is gone in places, would need full re-cut in a restoration. Keep in mind this is a true Prussian round top Sauer and it features the long action table. Good news is that the barrels will probably clean up with a back boring as they have excellent thick walls.

This gun is tight with great bores and ready for the field. Barrels ring like chimes and have great wall thickness. She carries her share of bruises and scrapes from a sporting life in the field but these do nothing to suppress her enthusiasm to be afield again. A great entry level shotgun for a first time SxS upland double gunner. Let this experienced mature French madame get you hooked on the double gun life! * You will see on the left barrel a stamp that says "Sauer." This for some unknown reason was added at some point in her history. This fine french shotgun is not a Sauer showing clear Saint Etienne French proofs.

This despite the need of some basic maintenance is actually a solid well made double. Built ~ 1891 it is in excellent condition for its age with solid Damascus unmodified barrels with good bores. The gun is ever so slightly off face but this can easily be fixed. The forend inlay originally was horn but now is brass so it would be nice to put this back to original and we could arrange to do this.

This fine Greener certainly could be used just the way it is and provide years of enjoyment (providing the proper loads were used).

This gun is a needy child but the original high grade quality might inspire! Bores are pitted fairly badly. Stock is a poor restock and has terrible dimensions anyway so could be used as a pattern to modify for a restock. Ejectors work fine, trigger pulls are ok. Some person we would like to incarcerate and castrate with my lawn mower buffed all the detail from the engraving so it would all need re-cutting as well as new screws. It is possible with a re-proof the gun could be used as is for a classic pick-up rack gun.

Proofed in August of 1963 this well made gun has excellent bores and is very tight. The double under bite lockup also has the double Kirsten barrel extensions that Merkel is famous for on its higher grade guns. The 6.5x57R round is one of my favorites as it is low recoil and fast and accurate. Based on the 8mm Mauser case this round can be purchased or easily reloaded. It is similar to the 257 Roberts but was invented by the Germans at least 20 years earlier!

James Purdey double rifle in .303 British - In superb condition in its makers oak & leather case Exquisite!

Ever have a "Wow" moment? I sure did when I lifted the lid of the case and beheld this stunning double rifle from 1899 with almost all its case color on its locks and its stunning marble cake wood. Built in the waning days of the Victorian era (The blessed queen died in 1901) James Purdey was then what I consider at the pinnacle of their gun craft. This beautiful double rifle is a physical testament to the craftsman and company that is still today setting the standard to compare other gun makers. Small bore English double rifles in usable calibers are quite rare. This rifle is in superb condition with an excellent bore. .303 is readily available and is not considered obsolete, in fact being recorded by many to be an excellent caliber for North American big game. This rifle features the Beasley patent self-opening mechanism. The next owner of this rifle is a very lucky man or woman and will not only have an excellent investment but a work of art and craftsmanship from the golden age of English gunmaking

Behemoth? According to the Websters dictionary the Simple Definition of "behemoth" is "something very big and powerful." This has to be the perfect word to describe this fine rifle.

Despite the momentous weight, the gun actually comes up great and the sites line up perfectly!

The bore and rifling is excellent. The Stock appears to be totally original with its correct original japanned lacquered finish. This gun is ready to shoot. The barrel at the muzzle is 1 1/2" wide! That is the width of a two by four stud! The massive lock and hammer are of the highest quality. The Damascus barrel is stunning, weighing in at 14 pounds alone

Whoever buys it and shoots it next... ...can I have a video to put on our web site?

Note the extra features such as side clips, set trigger, extensive scroll and game scene engraving, original scope base and a Greener cross bolt rib extension. Excellent shiny bores and she locks up bank vault tight. Ready for the next hunt. I will even throw in a box or two of shells! At 6 lbs. 6 oz. this is one of the lightest drilling's we have ever seen in this excellent caliber and gauge. The picture was taken last fall in Alaska with a days harvest using this drilling. Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge
1158
This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

Le Fusil de Chasse "Ideal" by Jean-Claude Mounrnetas
Men's Collectibles
Caliber
2025
This soft bound book is about the history and development of the Manufrance Ideal model round action trigger plate shotguns and rifles with many pictures and diagrams and the coveted serial number to date chart. We imported four of these from France. I am keeping one so we have three for sale. Yes, all the print is in French but I find with the charts, photographs and appendices the book very useful even if one does not understand a lot of French. I have a passion for these guns as they are so well made and designed but also beautiful to hold and to look at. Like a beautiful woman! :)

I know the price seems high but these were not inexpensive to us and the only book on the subject we are aware of so we paid the price.

J.P. Sauer Grade 17 - A worthy project gun ....
Rust & Dust
12 gauge

Medium deep pitting in both bores. One significant dent in the right barrel 4 3/4" from the muzzle on the right barrel. Gun is off face and needs rejoining. Chequering is gone in places, would need full re-cut in a restoration. Keep in mind this is a true Prussian round top Sauer and it features the long action table. Good news is that the barrels will probably clean up with a back boring as they have excellent thick walls.

This has been rather amateur stocked at least in the butt. The hidden sling is missing and needs a butt plate or pad. The barrels show some pitting but I believe would clean up as you could remove .005 from each and they should be clean. The top two tang screws need replacing. This was a project I never got too and worthy . I am open to trades.:)

Rust & Dust

This gun is a needy child but the original high grade quality might inspire! Bores are pitted fairly badly. Stock is a poor restock and has terrible dimensions anyway so could be used as a pattern to modify for a restock. Ejectors work fine, trigger pulls are ok. Some person we would like to incarcerate and castrate with my lawn mower buffed all the detail from the engraving so it would all need re-cutting as well as new screws. It is possible with a re-proof the gun could be used as is for a classic pick-up rack gun.

Quality features on this vintage sidelock such as bushed firing pins and beautiful locks. 75% case hardening on the locks! Overall in excellent condition I do recommend this gun as an excellent value. I will add the gun opens and closes very easily as the mainsprings are cocked by operating the top lever. We call these "Lever cockers", a feature that was used on many of the best quality McNaughton round actions in Edinburgh Scotland.
