Another one for the book! The lever forward of the guard pulls down and slides the barrel forward. Ingenious and effective! Barrels are Leopold Bernard Damascus. Leopold is considered the father of Damascus barrel making. This is a great price on such a high quality and historical shotgun that can still be used in the field.

Manufactured about 1887 this beautiful water fowl classic is in very sound condition. The bores have some light haze but no deep pitting and the barrels appear on face.

I really appreciate the very high grade beautiful oak leaf engraving which is fairly deeply engraved. The scroll work is of very high quality also.

The "C" shaped hammers are extremely elegant and are below rib site.

A classic English water fowl shotgun for a great price.

James Purdey top lever bar in wood in its makers case ~ Purdey letter states that this gun was completed in 1878 for Lord Ormathwaite as one of a trio

One of a trio this fine Purdey was completed in 1878 for Lord Ormathwaite and was later owned by the Honorable Gerald Walsh. See Purdey letter in the photo's.

Stunning marble cake wood and balance and very modern dimensions make this a very desirable Purdey. I am especially enamored with the bar in wood action, the most difficult to stock and the most expensive choice in the Purdey catalog. In the right barrel towards the muzzle there is a small area of pitting but in the area where there is very little pressure and was obviously there when the barrels were nitro proofed in 2012.

This gun is beautifully presented in its period oak and leather case.

*Note this gun still retains its full and full chokes allowing the new owner to easily have them opened to any favorite combination. We can arrange for this at no extra charge.

This is a very high quality English double with sound and nitro proofed Damascus barrels. While the Purdey patent thumb lever may put one off as they look rather unusual, it would be a gross mistake to do so as they are extremely ergonomic. I have been using a gun with this feature in the field for years and absolutely love this design.

This fine shotgun is tight on face with basically bright bores and it is field ready. It has not seen any recent restoration so if one wanted, a new oil finish would bring out what is marvelous smoky English walnut.

*Note this guns extremely modern dimensions and that it has a checkered butt with engraved heel and toe clips!

Henry Nock made guns for the English nobility, the military, and hunters. Nock later became Wilkinson Sword. I use to shave with a Wilkinson razor! Yes, the same company.

This is a quality gun and very shoot-able being in nice condition. A close examination of the proof marks leads me to believe this gun was built by Wilkinson under the Nock name on or after 1813.

From the proof marks we can tell this little British hammer double was built between 1904 and 1925. The gun is nitro proofed and appears to be at the original bore diameter. 16 Gauge English hammer doubles are rare to begin with but to find one by the esteemed John Dickson of Edinburgh is an extra special day.

This little gun is light but spry and handles well. I like the ornamentation on the trigger guard. Someone in the shop asked me what that was for and I said what I believe at least "just for pretty." Pretty is a worth while thing in my book.

Some pitting the bores but it is possible with some careful barrel work this could be a good shooter again.

Engraving shows some ware but is outstanding. I love the sculpted hammers. For this price it is a great example of pin fire guns and looks great just hanging around the gun room.

In its oak and leather case this stunning Atkin is the spitting image (and quality) of a side lever Boss we had in recently. Excellent balance and craftsmanship one would expect from the Edwardian period.

Built to the highest London standards in ~ 1895 this outstanding sidelever side lock is in wonderful condition. Note the fine engraving, modern high stock dimensions, and near exhibition wood.

Henry Atkin worked for James Purdey and proudly stated this fact on his barrels. The barrels on this gun are made from the finest steel of the the period, Sir Joseph Whitworth steel. These are at no surprise the same barrels that Purdey used on their shotguns.

This beautiful Dickson comes to us from one of my favorite hunting buddies. He is downsizing and it is to your benefit as this is a stunning example of what is considered by many to be the most elegant and sexy double guns ever to grace the fields of this earth.

Does anyone remember the old "Black Velvet" whiskey ads? The one with the stunning woman in the black dress? Seeing this gun in the rack brings forth the same response from seeing that ad… …Let me hold you!

I just looked it up in the Dickson book by Dallas and it says it was competed August 13th 1893. The new barrels appear to be by the maker.

As many of you know Boss & Co. is one of my favorite gun makers. There is much that can be said about them and I can think of nothing negative to say except they are more often than not cost more than many of us can afford. Having been sleeved here in the USA (2.5" chambers) this example is a bit more affordable and has much to offer.

When I have a client tell me they have a lot of guns but no really good guns I advise them "Sell the lot" and buy a Boss. "

*This gun is extremely rare as it has the side lever on the left where the right handed thumb falls naturally. Once you try this feature you will love it and not want an opening lever any other way.

The stock does have a 1" wood extension before the pad, an extremely well done extension I might add. Look at the pictures and be amazed.

Some guns like woman need no adornment to be the most beautiful thing in the room and this fine Westley reminds me of that rule. This stunning shotgun appears to have had a full restoration at some point in its history with new case colors, wood finish, and blue. The proof marks on the barrels tell us the gun was re-barreled by Westley Richards in approximately 1983 and I would suspect the full restoration was done by them at that time as the standards certainly meet their quality of work.

Field ready with the Westley selective single trigger, stout ejectors, and very tight on face.

This gun has been beautifully and tastefully restored by respected English restoration shop "Heritage Guns." Toby Barkley the owner and craftsman of this fine business made the following notes on this gun:

"This is a superb example of the BEST Birmingham sidelock ejector from this highly respected gunmaker, made in the heyday of the British gun trade. It features one of the best known of the esoteric opening systems that featured on many prestigious gunmaker’ s products of the time: the Powell Patent Lift-Up Toplever, more commonly seen on their beautiful hammerguns, rare in a hammerless sidelock."

I have to say this is a truly beautiful shotgun with some of the most sought after features to be found in a BEST sidelock such as bar action locks, safety sears, Deeley ejectors, and auto safety. Heritage Guns have restored the maker’s case to a very high standard. This is a truly beautiful package and at great price.

These McCririck shotguns from Scotland are certainly high grade and in excellent condition. This is a super deal on a Scottish sidelock featuring high condition, great wood, barrels, and stock dimensions great for many.

*Note that we could pull the wood butt plate and install a leather covered pad to make this fine shotgun up to a 15" LOP.

Nigel Browns definitive series of books on British, Irish, and Scottish guns "British Gunmakers" mentions on page 159 of volume III that James McCririck opened shop in 1839 and in 1904 split to two shops Ayr, and Kilmarnok. He goes on to state that the Ayr shop was closed at the beginning of WW I , July of 1914.

Our gun was thus built somewhere between those two dates as the rib shows both address’s . Edwardian period guns!

You may have not have heard of this fine gunmaker but they built stunning quality guns. I was very interested to learn they were in business for so long, starting in 1839 and the Kilmarnock shop only closing in 1992, in business 153 years!

This gun was built in the year 1896 and one just has to look at a shotgun like this and wonder how they did it. Highest craftsmanship is what turns me on and this gun does that. The action is lightly brushed but not bad and I have to admit the minimal engraving lends itself to its elegant lines. Best of all it handles and balances beautifully. Some buyers tell us they cannot afford a high grade English sidelock and I often tell them if they are patient we can find them a nice sidelock in the boxlock price range. This is one of those guns. Mark this one a bargain.

Great wood and stock dimensions for the upland hunter combined with super lightweight and chokes that will put the food on the table.

Don't let all those positive attributes distract you from the beauty and craftsmanship in this fine sidelock.

Known as "The Gun makers of the West" (Western England of course!) this firm started business in Bristol in 1876 and were still in business in 1964.

A Holland & Holland sidelock for under 10K? Yes! And it is basically a sound gun ready to see the field! In its makers case the gun is tight on face and has good dimensions.

If one wanted to restore the gun it could use new blue on the barrels, a few replacement screws, and a new oil finish. The forend wood could use a few minor repairs.

These climax guns have always been admired for their ergonomic rounded actions and nice balance.

This is a very nice Lancaster featuring the self opening mechanism. It is ready for the field. These guns have received a bum wrap as they have been called "Wrist breakers" as they were supposedly hard to close. When you close these it is cocking the main springs after firing. I find them no harder to close than a Purdey, not a big deal. The secret, as in Purdey's, is knowing how to snap the gun closed. Learn this trick and it is easy. This gun is very high quality at any price.

Nice Damascus brown on these barrels. The wrist has been well repaired with epoxy and seems very strong. A little checkering and cosmetics could make this a nice looking gun. The bores are fairly bright with a light frost but have numerous dings and one dent that should be removed.

What a fabulous little and light 16g. by this premier maker. Which seldom happens, we received this lithe magic wand in its original makers case, numbed to the gun. Really this Holland has it all, balance, stock dimensions, and simple classic elegance. Sometimes we are convinced a fine shotgun has to be covered in engraving and fancy wood to be the best. There are exceptions to every rule and this petite 16 is exceptional.

James Woodward 20g. Sidelock ejector with 26” steel barrels. Tons of case color on the locks and beautiful wood with excellent and long dimensions. These prewar 20g. over and under’ s are ever so rare and extremely sought after as they are known for their magic wand quality. Delivered to Abercrombie and Fitch NY on the 29th Dec 1929, the most sought after vintage of British BEST guns. If this Woodward 20g. is a magic wand it was possessed by Merlin.

I find that many look at guns of this type and price and cannot justify the cost but then will go out and buy a new car at this price point and in ten years that car is worth almost nothing. Invest and enjoy a beauty like this little 20 and in ten years it will be worth considerably more than the price, not less or nothing like their 10 year old car. Take this opportunity to make a solid investment while allowing you to own and enjoy what many connoisseurs consider to be the paragon of all shotguns.

This fine Scottish double has been given a new life with excellent 2 3/4" nitro proofed barrels which were built in England in 1952.

The stock does have a 1" wood extension before the pad, an extremely well done extension I might add. Look at the pictures and be amazed.

The weight of this gun lends itself to its 2 3/4" nitro proof. This MacNaughton is an excellent value and would be perfect for taking a vintage Scottish gun afield.

While this fine Ideal grade (pronounced "EE-DEE-ELL") is sound and field ready it does have a fair amount of handling marks in the wood and no case color remaining, thus the very fair price for this grade.

This model features the outstanding rising third bite and is built on the respected and radiused trigger plate action. Using coil main springs the internal hammers virtually never fail to fall. As far as I know these guns were never retailed in the USA.

You have probably heard me say this before but finding extremely original English guns in high condition is becoming near impossible. The good news is once in a while we get a gun in that is in fantastic original condition. This is one of those guns.

Weighing less than some English 2" guns this gun balances extremely well with a very lively feeling between the hands. The case color is near 90%, the wood finish 90%, the barrel black 80%.

This gun has its original case and hang tag which interestingly enough mentions that the gun was tested with American ammunition. Sold to an American? The original case shows considerable wear but the gun also comes with a Huey style oak & leather case with French fitted tools making an extremely attractive package and a seriously sound investment.

Let me keep this simple. This is an outstanding shotgun exemplifying what Germany could do in @ 1910 in sporting gun making. These are absolutely best boxlocks. The insides of these guns are just as beautiful as the outsides. They look like the insides of a Swiss watch with every piece hand fitted and polished to a mirror finish. The grade 40 features double sears, a long table flat, side clips and artisan deep chisel engraving just to name some of the many outstanding features. I really appreciate the beautiful original condition.

"Outstanding" a great word that describes this shotgun in every way.

W. Richards of Liverpool serial number records are listed in Nigel Browns book "British Gunmakers - Volume II." Using these records I was interested to find this gun dates to early in 1946. In WWII, the Germans surrendered May 7 1945. Was this gun under construction in England when the war ended? The Engraving and craftsmanship on this fine double is outstanding. Every fiber in my body tells me this gun has stories to tell. Are you a good listener?

The gold name, fine scroll, and deep chisel fences expertly executed scream quality. This gun is extremely sound and field ready. Did you note the weight? This is the same weight as an English 16 gauge!

This gun is nicely engraved with beautiful wood featuring very nice checkered side panels. Anson was a pivotal engineer in what today many of us believe to be the best side by side action design ever built. This gun comes in its rare makers case. A very nice package which includes history and still very functional in the field.

Manufrance Ideal guns as some of you may well know have been a special interest of mine for many years. This is a very light 12 with very interesting fine engraving on the rib. The original retractable sling is in good condition. I have shown a picture of the rising third bite (similar to the Rigby) which is one of the many things I love about these guns, that and being an affordable true round trigger plate action!

Upland hunters pay attention. This is a very sound, strong, well made English boxlock for a super price. At only 6 lbs. 9 oz. she would be a pleasure to carry all day. Better than to just carry, this little gun was built to swing on flighting birds. She balances just forward of the hinge pin on the iron resulting in an ever so light barrel weight forward... ...what many of us consider the perfect gun balance. Note the gun is cased in a vintage but solid English canvas case with trade label, cleaning rod, and cleaning ends, and snap caps.

Did you read the great article recently in "The Double Gun Journal" on T. Page Wood? It gave them excellent reviews and history......

Good stock dimensions on this solid English double. Left choke is a bit tight for my liking as I like to eat my taken game. I am not big on lead poisoning. :)

We can open this choke for only $75.00 and get it done in only a few days normally. Need a longer LOP? We can add a pad for you.

This would make an excellent introduction to an English doubles at an extremely fair price.

Medium deep pitting in both bores. One significant dent in the right barrel 4 3/4" from the muzzle on the right barrel. Gun is off face and needs rejoining. Chequering is gone in places, would need full re-cut in a restoration. Keep in mind this is a true Prussian round top Sauer and it features the long action table. Good news is that the barrels will probably clean up with a back boring as they have excellent thick walls.

A great entry level shotgun for a first time SxS upland double gunner. Let this experienced mature French madame get you hooked on the double gun life! * You will see on the left barrel a stamp that says "Sauer." This for some unknown reason was added at some point in her history. This fine french shotgun is not a Sauer showing clear Saint Etienne French proofs.

As far as I know Manufrance Ideals were never retailed here in the USA but thankfully a few have been brought back by soldiers and sportsman over the years.

This super high quality continental double could easily become a personal favorite. My current favorite hammer double is a La Page of Paris with a very similar push forward underlever like this little 16 has. I find this system very ergonomic, taking little time to become second nature. I prefer this system now over a top lever. James Woodward of London used something very similar for many years in their BEST sidelocks.

The large and ornate solid gold initials indicate this little flower was built for someone important. Now you can be that important person building on this guns long history. This little 16 would be a joy to carry in the field.

While this fine Ideal grade (pronounced "EE-DEE-ELL") is sound and field ready it does have a fair amount of handling marks in the wood and no case color remaining, thus the very fair price for this grade.

Do you like French wine and food like me? If so you might consider a classic French double. The Manufrance "Ideal" with its amazing rising bite is a great choice.

Nicely restocked with good dimensions, great wall thickness, and solid chokes, this true trigger plate round action has a lot to offer. There is very light pitting in the bores which could easily be removed (or left). Featuring the classic "eye glass" trigger guard and nice long 29" chopper lump barrels. I love how these guns open by pulling back on the lever behind the trigger guard which is very ergonomic.

If you know me, you will know I love these guns. Give me a call and I would be glad to let you know why.

Very pretty wood (a restock) on this little Ideal with nice long barrels. This grade does not feature the rising bite featured on some higher grade Ideal guns but it does have the classic double under-bite with the true trigger plate action. I see some epoxy bedding material in places where the wood meets the action but this will not in anyway affect performance and allows us to sell this gun at a much reduced price.

There is some light pitting in the bores which could be removed but if it were me I would take this light lady afield just as she is and enjoy her doing what she does best.

I have owned a couple of 24 gauge guns over the years and have always enjoyed this gauge. It has been continuously loaded by Fiocchi and is now loaded by RST ( see www.rstshells.com and call them also as they are not yet in the catalog ).

This is the first 24 gauge shotgun I have ever encountered by an English maker. The barrels while stating the standard Birmingham name and address on the left barrel, feature on the right barrel : "Unico Agent, Jaun Canedo Riv Adavia. 611. Buenos Aires." This obviously indicates this gun was built and retailed for the South American market, a very rare thing indeed for an English gun.

I put a couple of box's through this gun on clays and I shot it very well. This is saying something as most of you know I am a lousy shot!

This little .410 was a little off face when we got it but we had it professionally rejoined and it is now tight as a drum and ready for any field.

I cannot tell you the gun is pristine, it is not. As you can see in the pictures there are plenty of handling marks and the bluing is thin in places. The right bore has a few marks but they are not deep and the walls are extra thick.

This would make a great little .410 to use exactly as is and not having to worry about keeping it perfect. On the flip side it would be a rewarding process to have the barrels blued and stock refinished to make her look spiffy again.

Proofed in August of 1963 this well made gun has excellent bores and is very tight. The double under bite lockup also has the double Kirsten barrel extensions that Merkel is famous for on its higher grade guns. The 6.5x57R round is one of my favorites as it is low recoil and fast and accurate. Based on the 8mm Mauser case this round can be purchased or easily reloaded. It is similar to the 257 Roberts but was invented by the Germans at least 20 years earlier!

Lyon & Lyon sold British made rifles in London and Calcutta India. They were an outfitter for the sportsman bound out of London to the far parts of the British Empire. Charles Osborne built most of their guns and this is an excellent example. On the underside of the forend is the logo of a harpoon gun, the Charles Osborne logo. Featuring auto ejectors, bushed firing pins, dolls head with 3rd bite rib extension, and full sidelocks, this was a very nice gun in it day. The Bores on this rifle are excellent and the accuracy exceptional for a double rifle featuring four shots in 1'! See target and load provide. This rifle deserves to be in the field again soon, on the hunt for game. Are you the person to put it to its task?

If I had to pick a dream combination of rifle calibers with a shotgun barrel this would be it! I have hunted with both 16g shotgun for birds most of my life and also deer hunted with the 6.5x57 with outstanding results and relatively low recoil. This round is similar to our .257 Roberts.

To top every thing off to the right side rib is a .22 Long rifle and on top the original claw mounted German scope with perfect clarity.

Did you note the engraving? Outstanding. I love those pheasants!

The gun was proofed in Nazi Germany in March of 1942. This type of drilling is very rare and is called a "Bock" drilling.

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge

This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

This soft bound book is about the history and development of the Manufrance Ideal model round action trigger plate shotguns and rifles with many pictures and diagrams and the coveted serial number to date chart. We imported four of these from France. I am keeping one so we have three for sale. Yes, all the print is in French but I find with the charts, photographs and appendices the book very useful even if one does not understand a lot of French. I have a passion for these guns as they are so well made and designed but also beautiful to hold and to look at. Like a beautiful woman! :)

I know the price seems high but these were not inexpensive to us and the only book on the subject we are aware of so we paid the price.

James Purdey top lever bar in wood in its makers case ~ Purdey letter states that this gun was completed in 1878 for Lord Ormathwaite as one of a trio
Left-handed Guns

This beautiful hammer 12 features a new high grade stock with modern dimensions. Included with the gun is a vintage English leather and brass case and also a full set of 28 gauge Briley full length tubes.

This would make a great sporting clay or Vintager competition gun.

F.H. Holmes 12 ga. hammer double with Purdey second patent push forward under lever lever ~ Sherlock would love this little Mystery double!

Holland & Holland 16 ga with hand detachable sidelocks ~ I am really excited about this little 16!

Completed in 1921 this little Holland has beautiful balance and appeal. The locks can easily removed with the hand pin on the left lock and let me tell you, they are high grade and look like new!

Like I said in the header, I sincerely really like this gun. It is just one of those guns you pick up and you don't want to hand it to another or put it down.... ....I believe another name for a gun like this is a "keeper!"

Beautiful wood and very sound this rifle is ready for the hunt. While it does have a cheek piece on the right side for a left handed shooter I am right handed and heft the gun normally and it comes up just fine.

*This would make a super wild boar rifle!

This stunning rifle is in near new condition. I dislike saying any gun is in "new" condition but I can tell you this one is close.

I appreciate the craftsmanship in these rifles as well as the silky smooth bolt slide.
