What a nice pair of very shootable hammer doubles from this famous maker. They come in a wonderful pair vintage solid oak case. Number 1 gun has British sleeved barrels and number two gun has replacement steel barrels also done in England. The open barrels would be death on quail under most conditions while the other set would be great for just about every other upland bird. I note that these guns handle very well and have BEST quality locks. Consignor says sell together or buy just one for 6500.00.

Joseph Smith patent 347. I am assuming this is referring to the side lever but then again it could be the removable hinge pin.... A very nice gun extremely well made. Nice bores. This is a very nice higher quality English hammer gun with bright shiny bores. Holland & Holland 16 gauge hammer gun - How rare is that?

According to the Holland records this gun started out as a paradox which is a shotgun with rifling in the choke area so it can be used as a rifle and a shotgun. The rifling has removed but this has left it a very nice handling 16 gauge higher grade Holland hammer gun. I like how this gun comes up very much and hope I can shoot it before it is sold!

Knubley 22 bore double flint, ready for the field! Classic English Flint
Hammerguns

NVN
John Knubley was a very respected Sword and Gun Maker to the Royal Family from 1770-1795. First in Otly (Otley), Yorkshire (1766-1771) and then 11 Charing Cross, London(1771-1793) and 7 Charing Cross, London (1794 until his death in 1795). Samuel Brunn and later joined by John Mallet continued the business with Knubley’s widow until Brunn ceased trading in 1820. This double flint fowler is a circa 1770 22 bore. It went through a major restoration project that included barrel reconditioning, browning, and re=engraving, stock restoration , and action restoration. Peter Dyson of England restored the locks (the safeties were deactivated) at a cost of over $1700 in 2009. The gun remains un-fired after major restoration. The gun has won many awards at the annual Calif SXS gathering. What I like about this gun is the very shootable stock dimensions. This gun was made for wing shooting! Do look at the picture of the inside of the lock as they are works of art.

Very unusual to find a Dickson round action with a 16" length of pull. Do keep in mind that if you want it shorter that is not a problem, we can make it to fit to you if needed shorter. Charles Smith

So many of the quality gun makers names have been lost with time and this gun by Charles Smith gives us a direct connection with a smaller maker that very little is known but where the quality shows through. Nigel Brown's Book on British Gunmakers Volume III lists this as a Newark England maker. The gun retains considerable amount of case color on the beautifully engraved locks. I might mention the locks are high quality also with safety sears. This is a real value in an English sidelock.

Manhattan Arms Sidelock built by JP Sauer, early Prussian gun

These Prussian built Sauer side locks are very high quality. This one has been expertly spliced in the pistol grip to bend up the drop measurements to modern dimension. The bore does have some light pitting but overall bright. Barrels are possibly reduced in length but the they are filed together at the muzzle if done, it was not much.

This gun was imported to America by our friends at William Larkin & Moore. They record this as a KING 1 model. This little 20 is of the highest quality. This German gun has great full coverage engraving, side clips, cocking indicators, and extra grade wood work. Ivory inlays on the forend and drop points are a nice touch. This is a super nice classic Anson actioned Westley from the golden era. This gun features newer steel barrels nitro proofed. I love the classic wood on this gun. Notice we can ship direct, no FFL needed on this great Westley. We can remove the stock extension and have a best quality leather covered pad installed for $300.00. The LOP then would be about 14 3/16".

Almost Daly Diamond grade engraving on this German classic. Unlike the Daly guns this gun does not have the extra safety sears (the screws are fake!). Medium deep pitting in both bores. One significant dent in the right barrel 4 3/4" from the muzzle on the right barrel. Gun is off face and needs rejoining. Chequering is gone in places, would need full re-cut in a restoration. Keep in mind this is a true Prussian round top Sauer and it features the long action table. Good news is that the barrels will probably clean up with a back boring as they have excellent thick walls.

This gun is a needy child but the original high grade quality might inspire! Bores are pitted fairly badly. Stock is a poor restock and has terrible dimensions anyway so could be used as a pattern to modify for a restock. Ejectors work fine, trigger pulls are ok. Some person we would like to incarcerate and castrate with my lawn mower buffed all the detail from the engraving so it would all need re-cutting as well as new screws. It is possible with a re-proof the gun could be used as is for a classic pick-up rack gun.

German gunsmith Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse beginning in 1824, after conducted multiple experiments in 1836 produced the first complete needle fire gun. Here is what may be a one of kind 16g. needle fire shotgun! The lever not only moves the barrels to the right but when closing cams the barrels back into the breech face. This gun won the NRA Foundation trophy at the Celebration of Fine Guns in San Francisco.

Proofed in August of 1963 this well made gun has excellent bores and is very tight. The double under bite lockup also has the double Kirsten barrel extensions that Merkel is famous for on its higher grade guns. The 6.5x57R round is one of my favorites as it is low recoil and fast and accurate. Based on the 8mm Mauser case this round can be purchased or easily reloaded. It is similar to the 257 Roberts but was invented by the Germans at least 20 years earlier!

JPSauer sidelock drilling with side-cocking rifle and top tang safety, My favourite drilli
Drillings, Double Rifles, and Rifles
16 gauge
2337
149262
This drilling is chambered in 9.3x72RSS, a larger version of the standard 72 R using a case similar to the 9.3x74 but not the same ballistics. I have hunted with a drilling almost identical to this one for years and I have to say I just love the feel of these. Mine is my go too gun when I cannot seem to hit with anything else! This design is a full sidelock shotgun with the rifle sears built on a trigger plate. It is only hot when the rifle is cocked with the sidelever which equates to safe shotguning when the rifle is not in use. The top lever safe is a big plus as most drillings do not have this and we top safe people do not have to adapt. The peep sight is a work of art. The internal craftsmanship on these guns is like a pre-war Swiss watch. Bright bores, with some marks from some previous dings removed. The action appears to be recently tightened, tight on the face. Checkering is worn and rubbed in places but very restorable. Notice the detail in the front trigger! Wow.

Tight high grade double rifle that has seen Africa. The last owner shot two Cape Buff''s with this gun. Condition is high with bright and sharp bores. I notice on close inspection an old crack repair in the wood of the wrist. The Cape Buffalo in the picture resides in a great watering hole, the Road Kill, in Montana. This mighty queen resides over all there now. I will be posting the story of that hunt soon. This rifle wants to go back to Africa. She comes with ammo. Are you man enough to take her?

If you are not aware of the Lancaster slide and tilt patent then you need to learn about it. The lever beautifully cams the barrels in and out from the breech face, bringing the gun up tight every time. I love this action. The quality level is at the highest of the period and the bore is bright and the gun still has 40% case color. I love this gun. Comes with three die set and modern hard case.

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge
1158
This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

This soft bound book is about the history and development of the Manufrance Ideal model round action trigger plate shotguns and rifles with many pictures and diagrams and the coveted serial number to date chart. We imported four of these from France. I am keeping one so we have three for sale. Yes, all the print is in French but I find with the charts, photographs and appendices the book very useful even if one does not understand a lot of French. I have a passion for these guns as they are so well made and designed but also beautiful to hold and to look at. Like a beautiful woman! :)

I know the price seems high but these were not inexpensive to us and the only book on the subject we are aware of so we paid the price.

Dart is priceless and covers the dog and bird hunting aspects of Vintagedoubles. He is our hero in the field, being an incredible pointer with the best nose of any dog I have ever hunted over. We seem to have a problem keeping him off the kitchen counters if there are any tasty morsels left there.... ....No one is perfect!
