What a nice pair of very shootable hammer doubles from this famous maker. They come in a wonderful pair vintage solid oak case. Number 1 gun has British sleeved barrels and number two gun has replacement steel barrels also done in England. The open barrels would be death on quail under most conditions while the other set would be great for just about every other upland bird. This Holland balances between the hands, light and fast as you would expect. Built the summer of 1898 she still has her beautiful lines. Notice what appears to be scratches on the bottom of the action. These are natural, forging lines from the guns age showing like a Damascus pattern. We often see this on guns over 100 years old. This Rifle is No. 1 of a pair made for John Gerard Leigh in 1863 at a cost of 172 lbs. 10 s.. It is listed in the early Purdey's book . The Leigh's were a wealthy family in England, known for having one of the largest private steam yachts in England at the time. The Manor house still stands and is now a hotel. Records show that Purdey built 129 pin fire double rifles. This rifle is in exceptional condition with a bright bore and sharp rifling. Traces of case color still remain. It is obvious this gun has not been fiddled with, being very original, high grade, and hardly used. If you know of a Purdey collector you might want to tell them about this rifle.

If you are not aware of the Lancaster slide and tilt patent then you need to learn about it. This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (The next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. This soft bound book is about the history and development of the Manufrance Ideal model round action trigger plate shotguns and rifles with many pictures and diagrams and the coveted serial number to date chart. We imported four of these from France. I am keeping one so we have three for sale. Yes, all the print is in French but I find with the charts, photographs and appendices the book very useful even if one does not understand a lot of French. I have a passion for these guns as they are so well made and designed but also beautiful to hold and to look at. This is by a famous artist and it shows! Allan Brooks was a naturalist and artist who illustrated many books in the early part of the twentieth century. He lived in a cabin on Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, studying and painting birds. In 1906, he painted illustrations for the The Birds of Washington by William Leon Dawson, which was published in 1909. Eventually he illustrated thousands of birds from around the world. This gun is in proof with bores that measure .720 proofed at 13. Gun needs tightening before being shot. Barrels appear solid but some pitting in the bores, blue almost gone, and several small dings, Wood has a coat of heavy varnish that I would strip and put a natural oil finish on. An easy project.
