"John" Dickson Round action with wonderful newer barrels ~ Note the great LOP and that it is just Stunning! Boxlocks 12 gauge |
3204 4645 |
|
This beautiful Dickson comes to us from one of my favorite hunting buddies. He is downsizing and it is to your benefit as this is a stunning example of what is considered by many to be the most elegant and sexy double guns ever to grace the fields of this earth. Does anyone remember the old "Black Velvet" whiskey ads? The one with the stunning woman in the black dress? Seeing this gun in the rack brings forth the same response from seeing that ad… …Let me hold you! I just looked it up in the Dickson book by Dallas and it says it was competed August 13th 1893. The new barrels appear to be by the maker. |

You have probably heard me say this before but finding extremely original English guns in high condition is becoming near impossible. The good news is once in a while we get a gun in that is in fantastic original condition. This is one of those guns. Weighing less than some English 2" guns this gun balances extremely well with a very lively feeling between the hands. The case color is near 90%, the wood finish 90%, the barrel black 80%. This gun has its original case and hang tag which interestingly enough mentions that the gun was tested with American ammunition. Sold to an American? The original case shows considerable wear but the gun also comes with a Huey style oak & leather case with French fitted tools making an extremely attractive package and a seriously sound investment.

James MacNaughton Classic Round action with superb new barrels ~! Boxlocks 12 gauge |
3426 2592 |
|
This fine Scottish double has been given a new life with excellent 2 3/4" nitro proofed barrels which were built in England in 1952. The stock does have a 1" wood extension before the pad, an extremely well done extension I might add. Look at the pictures and be amazed. The weight of this gun lends itself to its 2 3/4" nitro proof. This MacNaughton is an excellent value and would be perfect for taking a vintage Scottish gun afield. |

There is something about these Scottish guns that just captivate me. William Evans "Best" Boxlock ejector with wonderful wood Boxlocks 12 gauge |
3042 9523 |
|
William Evans struck out on his own as a gunmaker in London in 1883. We know he worked previously for James Purdey and then 12 years with Holland & Holland. At the turn of the century he was known for offering “BEST” quality boxlock and sidelock guns. Interesting to me is the price in 1900 was the same on either, 49 pounds! I had wondered what was meant by a "BEST" boxlock as in our general trade a best gun is by part of the definition, a sidelock. This gun has helped me understand what William Evans was talking about when they would advertise “BEST” boxlocks. I dissembled this gun and found inside many features found on London “BEST” sidelocks including bushed firing pins and double safety sears. Further than these features was a high degree of craftsmanship and internal finish and polishing of all internal parts. Examining the interior design and execution of the Evans "BEST" boxlock it became obvious to me they required a very high degree of skilled labor and they would cost considerably more to produce than the average Birmingham boxlock. This example, built @ 1909, is simply a beautifully executed shotgun and a perfect example of what William Evans referred to as a “London BEST” boxlock. Typically if you can find one of these they rightfully run in a price range considerably more than the Birmingham boxlocks, usually 5-7K. This example we can offer an excellent price as I have knowledge the butt stock wrist was repaired in the past. The repair was professionally done, invisible, and may last for another 100 years but knowing this information I am compelled to list the gun at a price that if a restock was ever needed the owner would not be underwater in the gun. Stunning engraving, balance, craftsmanship, and wood, this little beauty has much to offer its future owner. |

T. Page Wood ~ This would make a great first English double! Boxlocks 12 gauge |
3205 1173 |
|
Did you read the great article recently in "The Double Gun Journal" on T. Page Wood? It gave them excellent reviews and history...... Good stock dimensions on this solid English double. Left choke is a bit tight for my liking as I like to eat my taken game. I am not big on lead poisoning. :) We can open this choke for only $75.00 and get it done in only a few days normally. Need a longer LOP? We can add a pad for you. This would make an excellent introduction to an English doubles at an extremely fair price. |

This gun is tight with great bores and ready for the field. Barrels ring like chimes and have great wall thickness. She carries her share of bruises and scrapes from a sporting life in the field but these do nothing to suppress her enthusiasm to be afield again. A great entry level shotgun for a first time SxS upland double gunner. Let this experienced mature French madame get you hooked on the double gun life! * You will see on the left barrel a stamp that says "Sauer." This for some unknown reason was added at some point in her history. This fine french shotgun is not a Sauer showing clear Saint Etienne French proofs.

This is a great example of the early Grant side lever trigger plate shotguns. These guns are interesting to me because in some ways they were a 100 years ahead of their time using coil springs (often used today) instead of "V" springs for their main springs. German gunsmith Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse beginning in 1824, after conducted multiple experiments in 1836 produced the first complete center fire gun. The lever not only moves the barrels to the right but when closing cams the barrels back into the breech face. This gun won the NRA Foundation trophy at the Celebration of Fine Guns in San Francisco. This will make an excellent addition to any collection and or display. I can see it directly next to a Blaser rifle, the beginning and the current state of the art side by side! |

This is a great example of a grade 4 Manufrance Ideal. These round actions while built differently than John Dickson guns are a true trigger plate action and are extremely ergonomic, reliable, and a joy to carry and behold. As far as I know Manufrance Ideals were never retailed here in the USA but thankfully a few have been brought back by soldiers and sportsman over the years. *Note that these Ideal guns have besides the classic Purdey patent double under bite a rising third bite similar to the classic and coveted Rigby patent. |

While this fine Ideal grade (pronounced "EE-DEE-ELL") is sound and field ready it does have a fair amount of handling marks in the wood and no case color remaining, thus the very fair price for this grade. This model features the outstanding rising third bite and is built on the respected and radiused trigger plate action. Using coil main springs the internal hammers virtually never fail to fall. As far as I know these guns were never retailed in the USA. |

Manufrance Ideal Round action in 16g. ~ a true trigger plate round action from France , an excellent value and super light! Boxlocks 16 gauge |

Do you like French wine and food like me? If so you might consider a classic French double. The Manufrance "Ideal" with its amazing rising bite is a great choice. Nicely restocked with good dimensions, great wall thickness, and solid chokes, this true trigger plate round action has a lot to offer. There is very light pitting in the bores which could easily be removed (or left). Featuring the classic "eye glass" trigger guard and nice long 29" chopper lump barrels. I love how these guns open by pulling back on the lever behind the trigger guard which is very ergonomic. If you know me, you will know I love these guns. Give me a call and I would be glad to let you know why. |

Manufrance Ideal Grade 2 with nice long barrels and LOP Boxlocks 16 gauge |

Very pretty wood (a restock) on this little Ideal with nice long barrels. This grade does not feature the rising bite featured on some higher grade Ideal guns but it does have the classic double under-bite with the true trigger plate action. I see some epoxy bedding material in places where the wood meets the action but this will not in anyway affect performance and allows us to sell this gun at a much reduced price. There is some light pitting in the bores which could be removed but if it were me I would take this light lady afield just as she is and enjoy her doing what she does best. |

Webley & Scott 24g. boxlock with ejectors! How rare is that? Retailed from Buenos Aires! This gun shoots great, I have shot it ~ New great price Boxlocks 24 gauge |
3498 86187 |
|
I have owned a couple of 24 gauge guns over the years and have always enjoyed this gauge. It has been continuously loaded by Fiocchi and is now loaded by RST ( see www.rstshells.com and call them also as they are not yet in the catalog ). This is the first 24 gauge shotgun I have ever encountered by an English maker. The barrels while stating the standard Birmingham name and address on the left barrel, feature on the right barrel : "Unico Agent, Jaun Canedo Riv Adavia. 611. Buenos Aires." This obviously indicates this gun was built and retailed for the South American market, a very rare thing indeed for an English gun. I put a couple of box's through this gun on clays and I shot it very well. This is saying something as most of you know I am a lousy shot! |

Webley & Scott 410 with nice 28" barrels and longer stock ~ NOT a closet queen but a gun ready for hard work! Boxlocks 410 gauge |
3455 85699 |
|
This little .410 was a little off face when we got it but we had it professionally rejoined and it is now tight as a drum and ready for any field. I cannot tell you the gun is pristine, it is not. As you can see in the pictures there are plenty of handling marks and the bluing is thin in places. The right bore has a few marks but they are not deep and the walls are extra thick. This would make a great little .410 to use exactly as is and not having to worry about keeping it perfect. On the flip side it would be a rewarding process to have the barrels blued and stock refinished to make her look spiffy again. |

Belgian .410 double boxlock ejector ~ a really cute little double with the Francotte name on it! But.... Boxlocks 410 gauge |

Unfortunately, Even though it has the Francotte name and liege on the barrels I do not believe this gun was made by Francotte. There are no Francotte proof marks on the gun and the serial number is way to low to be of their making. The gun is of Liege Belgium and the quality is quite nice and it has great stock dimensions, and auto ejectors, so there are redeeming factors for sure! The wood has been completely redone and the action newly case hardened and the barrels with new black. Someone spent some serious money restoring this petite flower. *looking carefully I see well hidden side panel inlays in the stock. |

A very nice pre WWII combination gun by one of Germany's greatest makers. The 8x57JR ammunition is quite easy to get and not expensive to shoot. Quite a good amount of case color on this gun.
