This is an extremely original and rare Dickson double which is in its nitro proof and is ready to shoot. Featuring great wall thickness, stock dimensions and rebounding hammers I cannot think what more one would want in a vintage Scottish double.

The Dickson book by Donald Dallas lists this gun to have been completed April 9th 1868.

Those of you that insist on original and un-restored guns pay attention to this one! She is a keeper.

It would be interesting to know the history of this gun. It has been very well taken care of.

*Note the Purdey style (patent?) grip safety which is usually only found on the high end guns of the period.

Thomas Turner ~ Featuring Super Rare Damascus 30" Chopperlump barrels! Yes! Chopperlump!
Hammerguns

This fine double has an extremely rare feature of chopperlump Damascus barrels. As far as we know only one man in the English gun trade ever managed to produce these. His name was Henry Parsons and he would leave his mark on all his barrels besides the other proof marks. The mark is a forging hammer. When I saw this mark I immediately took a closer look at the barrels and sure enough there was the very thin line separating the lumps. In my world it is the little things that can make my day and this made mine. It is just the coolest thing ever! In thirty years with vintage English guns I have only seen this once before.

This Turner has good wall thickness and very modern stock dimensions. The bores are beautiful, bright and shiny. An excellent gun ready for the field with a wonderful history.

Nitro proofed in 2007 for 2 3/4" this gun has a lot to offer. This gun was built between 1872-83 according to Nigel Browns book. I find bar action underlevers much rarer than back action underlever guns and I am not sure why. This gun is tight on face and field ready.

There is some light pitting in both the bores but was obviously there when the gun was reproofed in 2007 and the bore diameter measures exactly as it did when it was proofed at .724 (18.4mm).

What a beautiful English hammer double. Bar action hammer doubles are getting so much harder to find it was a pleasure to have this one come in the shop.

The smokey french walnut is stunning. The barrel bores are bright and shiny and have excellent wall thickness. The gun locks up vault tight and would be a great candidate for the RST low pressure 2 1/2" shells. Go to www.rstshells.com and check out the great selection. The stock dimensions are very modern and great for most.

J. D. Dougal was quite an individual. He had many innovations in the gunmakers trade while also having a line of pubs and brewery's!

Great dimensions on this entry level hammer double. It is unusual to find a steel barreled hammer double. There is some light pitting in both barrels but absolutely nothing serious with the thick walls. The pitting is more like a light fuzz. There is much to be said about this little but rather plain English girl next door hammer double. 30" Steel barrels with original 2 3/4" chambers and Birmingham proofing was the first thing to catch my eye before we purchased it in the UK. The other positive was all the original case color on the action and the strong lock up featuring the classic Purdey double under bolt with the Greener extended cross safety bolt. This is a very strong lock up.

This girl next door shows some history with a functional but replaced forend which has no checkering. We could have this checkered to match the butt stock but personally I would use it as is.

This gun is tight on face. The thin spot in the left barrel is near the muzzle end so not a pressure concern. There is some minor pitting places in both bores but they are bright.

This would make a great candidate for the RST low pressure shells which we have found to pattern so well. The chambers measure 2 3/4" but I would recommend the RST 2.5" 3/4 oz. or 7/8 oz. lite or ultra lite loads.

This gun started life as a Paradox but now has been made exclusively a shotgun. For those that are not familiar with the Holland paradox guns they were shotguns that also worked as rifles featuring rifling in the last few inches of the bore. As many found the rifling interfered with perfect shot patterns they would have the rifling removed to make them a better shotgun and that is what has been done with classic Holland 16g.

This Holland features excellent stock dimensions and handles very nicely, feeling lighter than its true weight. This would make an excellent 16g to participate in Vintager events and also work well for upland hunting over pointing dogs.

What a cool 20 gauge hammer gun! Check out the gold dog behind the top tang towards the hand. This is a very early Atkin ( lowest serial number I have ever seen) and it is noted on the rib that they did a conversion to breech loading on the gun. Bores are bright with some light pitting but with the thick walls could be confidently left or be easily back bored to a perfect shine. I would like to know the workman that built this gun as I know they were among London's finest.

Damascus lovers check out this pattern ~ a rare two pattern twist that is stunning. Any one have an idea about what the gold dog was for? It seems like it may have been more than just for pretty but perhaps a signature of a gunmaker or engraver?

If you know Boss guns then you know that they are the senior member of a very short list of the worlds greatest gun makers.

Henry Atkin worked for James Purdey and proudly stated this fact on his barrels. The barrels on this gun are made from the finest steel of the the period, Sir Joseph Whitworth steel. These are at no surprise the same barrels that Purdey used on their shotguns.

This gun dates from 1934 . A very nice Dickson from between the wars with great wall thickness and dimensions. This is the period that many consider to be the pinnacle of the UK gunmaking trade. The Bores are bright and shiny with a few pits in the right barrel towards the muzzle but in proof and nothing deep

Note the weight! And now have pictures of the gun in the vintage Dickson correct vintage case.

Some of you know me and that I am attracted to quality Damascus guns. This gun pulled me across the room when I saw it in a rack in England. From that distance I could see it was a shotgun of the highest form without knowing the makers name. Much to my delight I found on close inspection a Stephen Grant, one of my favorite makers. The condition of this fine shotgun is very nice and appears in original condition seeing little if no restoration. There is a small stock extension which we could remove and replace with a fine leather covered pad if one would like for a LOP up to 15 1/2"

Completed in 1903 this is a true Edwardian era gun ( Queen Victoria died in 1901 thank you Austin). The gun is found in an original Grant case which also is in very nice original condition.

Does anyone recognize the family crest in the stock?

The real bonus besides the condition is the modern stock dimensions. At 6 lbs. 2 oz. this would make an incredible woodcock, quail, or grouse gun. I also know it would hold its own in the upland fields and cliff sides after Hungarian partridge and chukar.

These trigger plate actions remove a large amount of wood from between the action so to strengthen it this gun has had a pin put cross wise across the head of the stock to prevent cracking. It was professionally and elegantly done with horn covers. The butt has a 1" horn extension.

Stephen Grant. He worked for Boss for awhile and then gave his notice, moved next door, and hung his shingle. In not long he was counted among England's greatest gunmakers. It is said Boss and Grant were on good terms and often shared work when one needed help. I observed an example of this once when I found some filers initials on a Grant that looked familiar. I realized I had seen them on a Boss that I had!

This is a super example of what Grant could do and at a very attractive price. Note the 2 3/4" nitro proofs.

We have had a few Charles Ingram guns over the years and I have always admired them. They were consistently of exceptional quality. I have heard in the trade they were best known in England and Scotland for their exceptional rifles but strangely enough I have never seen or possessed one, only shotguns.

This nicely cased sidelock is in wonderful condition. The rose and scroll engraving is exceptional.

For those of you that perceive you do not like shorter barrels (these are 26") I would love to put this gun in your hands to shoulder and swing. The way that it is balanced it feels like you’re swinging a long barreled gun! I have often heard woman say that length does not matter (Why were they telling me this?) and I think that in this case at least that us men should believe them.

Manufactured around 1913 this wonderful sidelock features hand detachable locks that are removed by simply lifting a small panel on each lock. Note the gold plating.

Joseph Lang is one of London's most respected gunmakers. He started business in 1821 and now exist as Atkin Grant & Lang. It is interesting that Joseph married one of James Purdey's daughters!

This is an extremely well made London sidelock with great dimensions, great walls, chokes and very beautiful wood. There is a wood extension but appears to be from the original stock and matches perfectly. If one did not want this we could ad up to a 1" Leather covered pad for a LOP up to 15 1/8".

Men that helped begin the making of high end and quality double guns. Frederick Beesley is most famous for being the inventor of the self opening mechanism that Purdey adopted in around 1880 and and is still in use by them today.

This gun is a true Edwardian gun dating from the dusk of 1905. With Best quality throughout it is hard to find fault with the dimensions, quality of engraving and barrels. The gun is tight on face and field ready. The wood is very beautiful but could if wanted benefit from a new oil finish and restoration of the checkering.

Some, as in myself in certain circumstances, prefer to use and enjoy the gun with the earned patina of time and use. If one would like to have us restore the wood and checkering I am very pleased to say we can now offer that service with the addition of very talented Jason Bartel to our restoration department. This Hussey, unlike in general its female counter parts, reeks of class. Although just border engraved do not let the lack of makeup fool you! This shotgun is beautiful inside and out, built to the highest standards of the Edwardian era.

Balanced just slightly forward of the hinge pin this shotgun handles perfectly. The bores are bright and clean with excellent walls and the barrels are tight on face. Own a London BEST for a fraction of the cost than if you were to buy a London first name of which the quality would be none better

This is a well made gun but has had some stock modifications done by a professional to fit a specific shooter. It would make a great restock project or just shoot it as it is. The current dimensions are very modern. It would also for the artisan be fun to try grain painting and make the stock changes invisible.

This is a shooter as is or would make a great restoration project. The barrel blue is thin. I detect it is ever so slightly off face as with the forend off I can barely detect the slightest wiggle.

On the positive side the barrels ring true and are sound. The wood would be quite beautiful if given a new authentic oil finish.

I have always appreciated William Evans shotguns. While they had their guns built for them in the London and Birmingham trade they obviously required a very high standard with details and quality that set them apart from many other makers. This dedication to quality is certainly a factor in why they are still in business today.

16g. Sidelocks are very hard for me to find so I was extremely excited to find this little gem in the UK and bring it across the pond. The non –selective single trigger (believe me that is a good thing, selective triggers are the ones that give single triggers a reputation for failure) is crisp and works perfectly. Choking is perfect for upland hunting or woodcock or southern bobwhites. I love 16g. and I really like this gun.

Boss 20g. Sidelock in exceptional condition and investment grade original. Featuring 28”whitworth steel barrels, 75% case color, 98% blue, in its makers case. This petite flower weighs in at 5 lbs. 4.5 oz., lighter than many 28 gauges. Stocked to the fences, assisted opening, iconic and crisp Boss single trigger, chopper-lump barrels, and stunning wood with super dimensions, this Boss has all and more of what we would expect from a Boss. What I expect most of all from Boss is what I think is their true trade mark, “Balance.” Let me tell you, get this gun between your hands and you will not want to let it go as you would feel your letting go of a part of yourself.

Twenty gauge Boss doubles are like prime real estate. They seldom come up for sale, are priced at the top of the market, and there are never any regrets in owning as they are always worth what you paid and more. A solid investment at $57000.00

Alex Henry has found new life as a 20g shotgun! What a lovely little gun this has become
Hammerless Sidelocks

Once a masculine double rifle from 1894 this piece of Scottish gun making history has evolved into a superb almost feminine 20g. sidelock that will please the members of the shooting sports for another 100 years or I hope, even more. I have seen and had many shotguns that were once double rifles but I have to say this is the first that is without doubt a true success. Often this conversion would result in a heavy, club like shotgun but this little beauty is well balanced and comes up beautifully.

Besides handling extremely well, Miss Henry is graced with seriously beautiful wood and outstanding engraving. This butterfly is currently one of my favorite guns in the shop at present.

These trigger plate actions remove a large amount of wood from between the action so to strengthen it this gun has had a pin put cross wise across the head of the stock to prevent cracking. It was professionally and elegantly done with horn covers. The butt has a 1" horn extension.

This has been rather amateur stocked at least in the butt. The hidden sling is missing and needs a butt plate or pad. The barrels show some pitting but I believe would clean up as you could remove .005 from each and they should be clean. The top two tang screws need replacing. This was a project I never got too and worthy . Great for parts at this price or an example of the action.

This weighty 10 is nitro proofed for the British 3 1/4" load ( 1 1/2 oz. ) . It has very nice bores and locks up tight as a drum.

The over all condition is excellent retaining at least 40% original case color. The engraving is sharp and has wonderful dogs on both sides. These heavy nitro tens are hard to come by with any condition as usually they were heavily used in salt marsh duck blinds.

You have probably heard me say this before but finding extremely original English guns in high condition is becoming near impossible. The good news is once in a while we get a gun in that is in fantastic original condition. This is one of those guns.

Weighing less than some English 2" guns this gun balances extremely well with a very lively feeling between the hands. The case color is near 90%, the wood finish 90%, the barrel black 80%.

This gun has its original case and hang tag which interestingly enough mentions that the gun was tested with American ammunition. Sold to an American? The original case shows considerable wear but the gun also comes with a Huey style oak & leather case with French fitted tools making an extremely attractive package and a seriously sound investment.

This is a super elegant round action from Scotland with gorgeous nitro proofed Damascus barrels. Stunning Damascus pattern. Did I mention how beautiful these barrels are?

These trigger plate actions remove a large amount of wood from between the action so to strengthen it this gun has had a pin put cross wise across the head of the stock to prevent cracking. It was professionally and elegantly done with horn covers. The butt has a 1" horn extension.

A super price for a sound and beautiful round action.

A tight and solid Churchill with great dimensions and rare 3" proofs. Many of my clients ask me if we ever get in a well handling English double which can take the American 2 3/4" shells with confidence. Here you are!

The stock extension matches well but with 14 1/4" original wood we can easily remove the extension and install a nice pad to get up to a 15 1/4" LOP.

For those of you which say you can't shoot short barreled guns you have never shot a Churchill like this gun. When the gun is up it feels and swings like a 30" gun! I heard this for years and was I admit skeptical but after I tried one hunting I was convinced.

William Ford boxlock with its makers case built in 1938 ~ An excellent example of what Ford specialized in....

William Ford was a well known gunmaker in the Birmingham trade for well over 100 years. He was first known as a barrel maker and barrel borer and was known for doing special boring for the Greener competition guns in the late 1800's. I understand the William Ford business closed their shop in 1993.

Being known for excellent barrels Ford has not let us down with this gun . Well struck but retaining excellent wall thickness these barrels are an excellent example of what the British gunmakers could do. The stock dimensions are modern and will fit many. Tastefully engraved with nice wood in very nice condition this tight little gun will make someone an excellent upland shotgun.

Built on a unique but 100% trigger plate action this is a gun that I have always been intrigued with. I like everything about them except for the safe which is located to the right and left of the trigger guard. It functions fine but I don't find them as ergonomic as the top safe.

So, despite the safety, I still shoot, promote and get excited about these guns as they are worth having, shooting and appreciating due to their great balanced round action and features. This grade and higher feature a rising bite third fastener similar to the coveted Rigby rising third bite. The pull back lever behind the trigger guard opens the gun and is extremely ergonomic. It is out of the way and very easy to operate.

Better than to just carry, this little gun was built to swing on flighting birds. The full choke in the left with cylinder in the right is a common English choking and was effective in driven shooting. J.D. Dougall Sidelever! My feedlot pigeon gun choice and now it could be yours....

Yes, the sleeve line shows (a re-blue would help with this). The old lady has some wrinkles but not many I can see considering she was put together in 1883!.

Jason and I were in basin shooting feedlot pigeons last Saturday. At 5:30 in the morning I had to pick what guns to take ( I always take two, one should always have a back up). I without hesitation took my old standby and then thought "What have I seen in the shop I would like to shoot?"

I had the choice of some Boss guns, and a couple of Purdey's and Hollands but my mind came back to this old Dougal sidelever I had recently come through the door. She was my choice. Sometimes the most expensive gun in the shop is not my choice and neither should it need to be yours.

Beesley is a very old and respected name in the London gun trade. Frederick started his apprenticeship at William Moore & Grey where I am sure he worked with many of the gun makers from Joseph Manton. Men that helped begin the making of high end and quality double guns. Frederick Beesley is most famous for being the inventor of the self opening mechanism that Purdey adopted in around 1880 and and is still in use by them today. This boxlock is tight and field ready and quite a deal for a London gun.

This vintage Westley has barrels with excellent wall thickness. It is perfectly tight on face. Being built between 1890 and 1891 we can ship direct as it is antique.

If some one could use a 14 3/8" LOP we could remove the current pads and put a nice new "Old English" or leather covered pad on the gun which would look very nice.

Of the early Westley guns I like this model as it has the elegance of the early guns but features the Purdey double under bite. Guns before this often only had one or no bites on the under lug which was not near as strong as the design on this gun.

A solid English waterfowl gun with great dimensions for a fair price. Do I need say more?

The original proof marks are 3" for a 1 1/2" load and it was recently reproofed for 2 3/4" which I know makes no sense. Consulting with proof experts, we believe that the gun is out of the original proof in the right barrel by only one thousandths so it was resubmitted for new proof and the proof house screwed up and marked it for 2 3/4" instead of 3" accidentally. Proof house employees are government employees who are human just like the rest of us and make mistakes. The thing too remember is this is a very strong gun!

This gun has a lot to offer for the price. Wood worthy of a Boss or Purdey for one. It is tight on face and ready to shoot. There is honest engraving wear showing this old girl has spent a considerable amount of time afield.

I detect and old stock repair in the wrist that has been expertly done and reinforced with an extended top tang. It was so well done it was only because of the extended tang that I was able to figure it out as it is virtually impossible to see without magnification and in just the right light.

Someone carried and loved this gun. The checkering on the forend and the butt has nearly been worn off! When I was first offered this gun I did not at first look think I would want it. I obviously changed my mind as I found the gun tight on face with nice bores. The trigger pulls were good. The wall thickness was great and the barrels still had all their choke. In other words, this gun is ready to go and will give many more years of faithful service! Its like the 20 year old horse we had that went on to live to over thirty! Looks can be deceptive. ? Use the gun as is as a great backup gun or do an easy restoration. It is up to you. Either way this is a great gun for this kind of money.

Smythe was a well known gunmaker from Darlington. This gun while having seen considerable use is still tight and strong and would make a great entry into finding out about the balance and handiness of the English double.

You may wonder about the dowel in the head of the stock. This was added to strengthen the stock left to right. It may have had a crack in the center of the stock and this would after the repair help prevent it from happening again.

This gun features extensive remaining case hardening, 90% or better. The blacking on the barrels is also 85-90% or better.

This will make some one an excellent upland double.

Always wanted a Scottish double? This wee lass of a 16g. at just over 6 lbs. with 28" barrels is what I consider the perfect western upland bird gun. Light enough to carry all day but with enough weight and inertia to swing well with a large enough bore to provide an excellent pattern with a 7/8 oz load.

This gun is tight on face and field ready.

Very pretty wood (a restock) on this little Ideal with nice long barrels. This grade does not feature the rising bite featured on some higher grade Ideal guns but it does have the classic double under-bite with the true trigger plate action. I see some epoxy bedding material in places where the wood meets the action but this will not in anyway affect performance and allows us to sell this gun at a much reduced price.

There is some light pitting in the bores which could be removed but if it were me I would take this light lady afield just as she is and enjoy her doing what she does best.

Do you like French wine and food like myself? If so you might consider a classic French double. The Manufrance "Ideal" with its amazing rising bite is a great choice.

Nicely restocked with good dimensions, great wall thickness, and solid chokes, this true trigger plate round action has a lot to offer. There is very light pitting in the bores which could easily be removed (or left and shoot it as is as I would do). Featuring the classic "eye glass" trigger guard and nice long 29" chopper lump barrels. I love how these guns open by pulling back on the lever behind the trigger guard which is very ergonomic.

If you know me, you will know I love these guns. Give me a call and I would be glad to let you know why.

Of the sliding breech guns the Charlin has always been considered the best. While very plain this little 16g. is extremely well made.

Sliding breech guns built by Darne are well made but to properly operate them you have to almost firmly "horse" the action for it to operate properly. The Charlin sliding breech is much smoother and easier to use. It is rumored the Charlin breech slides on ball bearings it is so smooth but I have had gunsmiths tell me "there is no ball bearings in those guns!"

William Richards, often confused with Westley Richards, was a well established and respected gun maker in Liverpool who opened his business in 1780. My research shows the business under that name was open to at least 1996. That is 216 years!

This exceptional and rare Model 21 is in basically new condition. The last owner never fired it and when he purchased it was told it was unfired also. This gun is what in the model 21 collector world was called a gift gun. These were guns built in the Winchester factory on direction of the CEO or manager to be presented as a gift from someone or department of the Winchester Arms Company. It is believed this particular example was built as a gift from John Olin to the then President of Yale. See the photo's here of the original work orders.

What a rare opportunity this is and in the spirit of its origin would make such a wonderful gift to another collector or to pass down to a sporting son or daughter establishing a family legacy.

A beautiful rifle in a classic British caliber. The bore is excellent.

The Scope is a Leopold VX-3 1.5-5X22mm . Note the photo of the massive near 60 lbs. of brass, die set, bullets, etc that comes with this rifle.

This is a super rifle at a great price. Griffin and Howe graciously informed us this gun was built in mid 1957. An excellent vintage in a classic British caliber.

Nice bore on this wonderful little English rifle. We emailed Purdey's and and they said Woodward sold these rifles but had them made in the English trade. They believe Rigby was the likely maker of this rifle.

The load data on the side of the action says: Cordite 37-250 Max and DuPont 48-250 Max.

I love the selection of safari fold up sights out to 500 yards! The bore is very good for a rifle of this vintage with strong rifling.

This rifle shows honest field use with a good number of handling marks with minor cosmetic ware and tear. Undoubtedly from years of hunting red stag in the Scottish Highlands. I have been there and honestly it is very rough, rocky and steep. The weather there is not what one would call like paradise. It is obvious the owner did know how important bore care was as the bore is quite nice and bright with sharp rifling.

If you like a rifle that shows its patina of history while still being highly effective in the field this could be the rifle for you!

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge

This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

On the positive side the barrels ring true and are sound. The wood would be quite beautiful if given a new authentic oil finish.

This has been rather amateur stocked at least in the butt. The hidden sling is missing and needs a butt plate or pad. The barrels show some pitting but I believe would clean up as you could remove .005 from each and they should be clean. The top two tang screws need replacing.
