A very original and rare double this Boss is a true find. The wall thickness is excellent although there is considerable pitting in the bores. It is possible with this great wall thickness the barrels could be back bored and have the pitting removed.

I am sorry about sending out notifications twice but wanted to be clear this fine shotgun has rebounding hammers. I miss listed it by accident the first time. This is an exceptional London hammer double. It features crisp best quality London scroll, marble cake wood, and great long and bright bored clean barrels. The dimensions are high and modern. As beautiful as it is what I really love most about it is the way it feels between the hands.

The gun is cased in a wonderful antique mahogany case restored to fit perfectly to the gun. A truly beautiful thing in itself.

*Note the 2 3/4" recent proof on the 30" barrels!

Exceptional 12g. 30” barreled Harris Holland of 98 New Bond Street London. Yes, this is the firm as we all know as Holland & Holland. Harris had a nephew Henry Holland which was an apprentice to the firm and when Harris retired in 1876 he took Henry as partner and changed the name to Holland & Holland. Wonderful history but what is really important here is they made and still make some of the best guns in the world. This example is in excellent condition. Featuring 30” highest quality Damascus and much case color and finish remaining, with bores that make mirrors jealous. This example is a gun that one can appreciate for its quality, its history, but most of all for how it feels and swings between the hands. RST shotgun shells would be perfect for this wonderful shotgun. See them at www.rstshells.com. Once you start shooting a quality hammer double you won’t look back. A true bargain .

This wonderful English gun is a great example of one of the many makers we have run across through the years of which there is virtually no history but shines with with quality and will be a joy to shoot in the field. Being rather obscure but of high quality this gun would be priced three times what we are asking if the gun said "Purdey," "Holland," or "Boss" on the rib.

Note the 2 3/4" proofs and 30" Damascus barrels. The Long LOP can easily be changed to fit almost anyone!

Super High Quality 16g. Hammer Double from Belgium ~ Note the superb Damascus barrels!
Hammerguns

Long barreled and extremely elegant this stunning 16g. is a joy to behold. The gun has English nitro proofs and mirror bores with tons of wall thickness. We could easily arrange to have choke back bored into the bores with these kind of wall thickness's, although if your in like mind with me, choke is highly unnecessary.

What really strikes me about this 16g besides the obvious high quality is the stunning Damascus pattern. I believe this pattern is the one developed by famous French Damascus barrel maker Leopold Bernard. Leopold Bernard (1832-1867) and Rene Leclerc were barrel makers in Paris and responsible for many of the patterns seen on barrels like on this gun, produced in France, Liege, and Ferlach. Bernard was the only barrel maker that was not required to proof his barrels in the French proof house as the government had so much respect for his work.

Note that this is a push forward underlever. See where the metal of guard is so elegantly checkered? That is where one just pushes forward with their thumb and the barrels fall open. So cool!

This is the classic Premier London "Best" with the pinless sidelocks. The gun features chopperlump barrels, beautiful wood, and great stock dimensions for most. She is tight and field ready. Only thing I might consider is opening the right to IC or Cylinder if I was going to use it for upland birds. This is not expensive, less than $100.00.

I might note that finding a 30" barreled Churchill is very rare as most were built with 25"barrels.

29" barrels are to some of us the perfect barrel length. This fine Scott sidelock features 2 3/4" proofs, tight on face, outstanding engraving, and field ready. We can easily change the pad out for a shorter length of pull for those of you that are not 6' 6" !.

The Bores have a tiny amount of light haze (very light pitting) which could easily be removed with a very light bore polish. The gun has plenty of minimum wall to do this. Myself, I would just get it out in the field and use it just like it is. Pigeons, pheasants, grouse, quail, beware!

James Woodward built a lot of Best guns with 29" barrels and this gun proves that other great makers like William Powell built guns with this barrel length also. I really do like this length as to me it is the best of both worlds. They swing well but are light enough to carry all day.

This Sidelock was once one of pair but the number one gun it seems is lost to time. The near full coverage scroll engraving is very crisp and retains some case color, near 40%. The gun locks up vault tight and the barrels are in very good order. They are bright, ring well. They do show some very light frosting but absolutely no deep pitting of any kind. We can arrange to have this frosting removed to become mirror if your one of those who demands perfection.

The case does appear to be an original Powell case. I note when we took the picture it was when the gun was just unpacked from England. This case will clean up nice and we will do that before the gun ships out.

Surviving company records show our gun was sold to Major S.J. Symons on 14 September 1907. It came back to Powell and was sold 2nd hand on 13 December 1945 to Major H.D. Semist

Beyond the wonderful engraving this gun features very nice marbled English walnut and an extra Purdey hidden third bite.

The barrels have some light pitting on the outside of the left barrel that could be removed with a restrike and black. Probably the result of being put away in a damp case. The gun is tight on face and field ready.

This very interesting Lancaster is one of their "12-20" models . The Lancaster 12/20 was marketed as a 12 GA gun with the heft of a 20GA. How did they do that, you might ask? They use the Baker patent locks which avoid deep cuts in the bar of the action, thereby allowing for a smaller action compared to the standard sidelocks. This one features a pigeon forend, disk set strikers, and assisted opening. Built about 1928 so of the famous between the war's London quality.

This gun features nitro proofed 30" barrels with mirror bores. Other features include auto ejectors, tight on face barrels to action, and excellent modern stock dimensions cut from a very nice piece of English walnut. The left choke is tighter than many (like me) might want it but remember we can have chokes opened very reasonably. Also, if you need a longer LOP we can provide excellent English style leather covered pads up to 1".

This is a very nice example of an English sidelock. It is well balanced and feels great between the hands as any well made gun should.

I did not know much of this maker so I did some sleuthing on internet and actually found quite a lot:

Built between 1901 and 1905 by address's on rib William Atkinson was the son of Joseph Atkinson of Lancaster. He was born in 1851. By 1871 William had joined his father in the business in Lancaster, but in about 1874 he opened his own business at 52 Stricklandgate, Kendal, Westmoreland; in about 1878 this moved to 8 All Hallows Lane. There may have been a branch of the firm in Preston. In 1874 William and his wife (Eleanor b. 1850) had a son, Joseph Harvey Atkinson, and in 1876 another, Arthur Falder Atkinson (both born in Kendal), they both worked in the business as gunmaker's assistants, there were also had two daughters born in Kendal, Edith (b.1873) and Maud (b.1878) who appear to have worked in the business. In 1881 Joseph Atkinson retired and William took over the business in Lancaster re-naming it William Atkinson. In about 1885 the firm moved to 20 Market Street, between 1890 and 1901 they took over the adjoining premises at 18 Market Street. Between 1890 and 1894 the business in Kendal moved to 58 Highgate. Joseph Atkinson died in the late 1890s, and in 1900 the firm Lancaster business was re-named William Atkinson & Sons. By this time the firm had a substantial trade in bicycles. In about 1901 a branch was opened at 11 Skipton Street, Morecambe, Lancashire. This was probably run by one of the sons, it appears to have closed in about 1905. Between 1901 and 1905 the Kendal business became known as Atkinson & Griffin, it appears to have ceased trading in 1925. Between about 1905 and 1909 the firm in Lancaster occupied premises in North Road. In about 1935 the firm moved to 26 Market Street, Lancaster, but the Lancaster business appears to have closed in 1940. In 1955 Thomas Atkinson & Sons was recorded at 19a Stricklandgate, Kendal. Thomas Atkinson was certainly related, perhaps only distantly. The firm appears to have closed in about 1985.

Agnew & Son Sidelock ~ Nice wood! A lot of gun here for the money
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge

Slightly cast on for the left handed shot this gun could easily be bent back to a right handed gun. The gun is tight and field ready but to be up front this was a rather tired gun that was brought back to life with newer sleeved barrels. There is engraving ware and a few small pits in both bores. The trigger guard is a replacement and has no engraving.

Built before 1899 there is no FFL needed so can ship direct. I do love the early Purdey style fences and the Purdey style hidden third bite.

William Evans 16g. Sidelock Ejector with Original Evans Makers Case ~Sale!- Single trigger for those late snow roosters when warm gloves are in order!

I have always appreciated William Evans shotguns. While they had their guns built for them in the London and Birmingham trade they obviously required a very high standard with details and quality that set them apart from many other makers. This dedication to quality is certainly a factor in why they are still in business today.

16g. Sidelocks are very hard for me to find so I was extremely excited to find this little gem in the UK and bring it across the pond. The non –selective single trigger (believe me that is a good thing, selective triggers are the ones that give single triggers a reputation for failure) is crisp and works perfectly. Choking is perfect for upland hunting or woodcock or southern bobwhites. I love 16g. and I really like this gun.

Completed in April of 1982 this is a nice example of what the Germans build. Great dimensions and good balance. Note the Kersten patent double lump extensions for a super tight lock up. This baby is not coming apart! In my hands the gun is lively and comes up naturally.

Alex Henry has found new life as a 20g shotgun! What a lovely little gun this has become
Hammerless Sidelocks

Once a masculine double rifle from 1894 this piece of Scottish gun making history has evolved into a superb almost feminine 20g. sidelock that will please the members of the shooting sports for another 100 years or I hope, even more. I have seen and had many shotguns that were once double rifles but I have to say this is the first that is without doubt a true success. Often this conversion would result in a heavy, club like shotgun but this little beauty is well balanced and comes up beautifully.

Besides handling extremely well, Miss Henry is graced with seriously beautiful wood and outstanding engraving. This butterfly is currently one of my favorite guns in the shop at present.

Built in the late 1880's this lever cocking boxlock is really quite a beautiful gun. For a gun of this period it has many features such as the Purdey double under bite, an extra bite in the rib extension similar to the Westley Richards patent and also unique cocking indicators. The gun is tight and ready for the field.

While the bores show some light pitting/haze they are basically bright and have tons of wall thickness so this could be removed with a back bore if one wanted mirror bores.

This gun has a fairly short length of pull but could be made to 14 3/8" with a 1" recoil pad.

These Webley boxlocks are to me like the Winchester Model 21 of England. Well made and stout with the exception that I believe the Webley is actually better balanced in general. This gun with its tight chokes could be used as is for tight and long shooting but remember if you don't want tight chokes we can have the chokes opened to anything you would want for only $70.00 per barrel.

The 2 3/4" Nitro proofed chambers make this gun very versatile in the USA. The semi beaver tail forend I believe to be added later in the guns life, probably while here in the USA. This addition has obviously been done professionally as it is extremely well done.

These are very well made and solid guns for the money. I believe the Browning BSS SXS guns were built by this company. One of the first double guns I ever owned was a Browning BSS 20g., a gift from a friend near forty years ago and I still have it. It was always reliable and it shot very well.

This example is in excellent almost new condition with 90% or better remaining case color, wood finish, and blue. This gun was built to use the 2 3/4" shotgun shell.

We received it from one of our favorite customers that purchased the gun new in Paris and obviously kept it in near new condition. Featuring a long length of pull and 2 3/4" chambers this fine little double still only weighs in at 5 lbs. 15 oz..

What a pleasure to carry on those long upland hunts.

Built on a unique but 100% trigger plate action this is a gun that I have always been intrigued with. I like everything about them except for the safe which is located to the right and left of the trigger guard. It functions fine but I don't find them as ergonomic as the top safe.

So, despite the safety, I still shoot, promote and get excited about these guns as they are worth having, shooting and appreciating due to their great balanced round action and features. This grade and higher feature a rising bite third fastener similar to the coveted Rigby rising third bite. The pull back lever behind the trigger guard opens the gun and is extremely ergonomic. It is out of the way and very easy to operate.

This outstanding example of gun art and custom work is featured on page 792 of "The Colt Engraving Book Volume II" by R.L. Wilson. Featuring gold inlays of Western motifs and flush gold borders, crisply cut scrollwork, Royal blue Finish, and eagle grips. We have ordered Volume I & II to go along with this purchase.

The gun appears unfired. It was engraved (see copy of original invoice dated January 23 1979) by Robert B. Burt who worked for the Colt Custom shop for many years.

The gun is in unfired condition and does not appear to have been turned. This would make an outstanding gift (retirement, birthday, or just because) to a loved one or how about yourself?

Nice condition and excellent bore! Holland & Holland tested and retailed this rifle as it is engraved on the barrel. This action is considered one of the smoothest bolt actions ever developed. Husqvarna built and retailed this rifle as their model 9000. Read about all the kind things said about this action at : https://www.buckmasters.com/Magazines/GunHunter/Articles/ID/2847/Five-Guns-Worth-Finding

The fact that Holland & Holland was willing to put their name on this rifle attests to its design and quality.

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge

This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

I should have put some leather restore on this case before the pictures as I know it would look really good. It is a solid case with a good handle and hinge. Originally for a pair of high end London BEST guns. Free shipping within the Lower 48. Currently for 29" barrels but with minor adjustment can take up to 31". We could do this before shipping. I would date this case from the late 1880's to up to before WWII.
