Fredrick M. Diss of Colchester ~ten gauge boxlock with nice barrels ~ 3" nitro proofs! Boxlocks 10 gauge |
4746 40593 |
|
We don't know a lot about this maker except that he set up shop at 5 Pelham's Lane in Colchester, Essex, from 1901 to 1913. A very sound in proof gun with very nice barrels. With 12 gauge or smaller inserts this gun might lend itself to be a good gun for the vintager sporting clay course as the weight and stock dimensions are good. |

William Evans marketed this model as their "Best Quality" boxlock as they feature top notch engraving, wood, fit and finish and our gun is not an exception. This model also features bushed firing pins and the coveted extra safety sears for each barrel, and engraved heel and toe clips. *Note the great modern stock dimensions which fit most of us well and the more open chokes for more birds in the bag when hunting upland birds. |

Charles Hellis and Sons ~ Check out the engraving and other features of this beautiful little double Boxlocks 12 gauge |

People often think the English London BEST sidelock is the most beautiful of the classic double guns but every once and awhile we get a boxlock in that is extremely attractive, handles well, and made with extreme care and craftsmanship. This little Hellis is a perfect example. *Note the 29" steel barrels and the great stock dimensions and chokes for upland game. Very light for a 29" barreled gun at 6 lbs. 6 oz.. |

Built in 1906 this light 12g. is very tight on face and has very bright bores. The stock dimensions are great for many. The left choke is over tight in choke but we could have this opened up to what you would want for an additional $75.00. If you don't care for stock extensions like the one on this gun always keep in mind we can remove this and you can have a recoil pad installed in its place. |

Mortimer and Son ~ George Street, Edinburgh, classic vintage Scottish boxlock from 1895 ~ No FFL needed, can ship direct Boxlocks 12 gauge |
3173 7452 |
|
This Scottish gun from Edinburgh while appearing worn on the outside is actually a fairly stout and strong gun. The barrels are tight on face (they ring beautifully) and the bores quite nice being bright and free of any heavy pitting. What there is extremely fine and could easily be polished out if desired. The gun was nitro proofed in 1968 according to the proof marks on the flats. Obviously ready for the field as is but this would be a fun one to give a new oil finish to the wood and with a light pick up of the checkering. I would have the barrels browned by Buck Hamlin to bring back their former beauty. *For those that will ask: That is a scratch on the surface of the stock on the right side of the butt stock near the butt, not a crack. It would be gone if properly oil finished. |

Westley Richards on there early action, one of the first hammerless boxlocks and she still works great! @1880 Boxlocks 12 gauge |

Very solid Westley which could be used as is or restored to new glory. Bores are bright, barrels ring like my church's bells. Right barrel has lifted dent 12" from breech on +that could use just a touch more work to be gone and then polished would be gone. Gun is tight on face and in proof so can be taken afield. | |||

Lancaster Assisted opening boxlock ~ The famous "Wrist Breaker!" Boxlocks 12 gauge |
4441 08298 |
|
Tight with beautiful barrels inside and out this is a nice example. Like a Purdey, these guns are known to be hard to close as you compress the springs as you close the gun. In that regard this gun is a perfect example as it is hard to close. I found one must hold the barrels farther out than with a regular double to give one more leverage and give the gun a "snap' to close it. I would not say it is really easy but is something that can certainly be learned. People with weak wrists should not buy this gun! :) Great choking and a good LOP for many. |

Westley Richards we found in the back of our vault ~ Jim said did the cat drag it in from the sewer? Boxlocks 12 gauge |
4707 T9140 |
|
We found this in the back of the vault and thought we should find a home for it. Actually tight on face and in proof. The bores are bright and shiny. The minimal wall thickness is thicker than most in fact very thick for this vintage shotgun. That's the good points! Sadly the barrels in the second half towards the muzzle have considerable pitting probably caused by being put away wet in a case. The stock has numerous handling marks. The wood could be easily refinished but striking the barrels you may only get about 80% of the pitting. Or you might get it all. It is very functional as is so I would use it as a rainy day gun and do nothing to it! |

Gustav Kerstan 16 ga. with unique lock up ~ For the shotgunner that likes to show up with something completely different! (But effective!) Boxlocks 16 gauge |
2983 13637 |
|
This is one of the most unique side by side shotguns we have ever had in the shop. Many have heard of the "Kerstan" rib extension extra bite. This patent is still in use today by Merkel on their best over and unders. This Kerstan marked example is a double Kerstan bite on a horizontal profile. An extremely strong and unusual prewar 16g. side by side that weighs under 6 lbs. but carries 29" Krupp barrels. The condition is quite good although there is some light pitting in each bore. I have shot this gun and I have to say it handles extremely well. This is from my personal collection, and I often referred to this gun as my "Hammer head shark" gun! |

Manufrance Ideal Grade 2R ~ This is the Classic French Round Action Boxlocks 16 gauge |
3557 18276 |
|
Built on a unique but 100% trigger plate action this is a gun that I have always been intrigued with. I like everything about them except for the safe which is located to the right and left of the trigger guard. It functions fine but I don't find them as ergonomic as the top safe. So, despite the safety, I still shoot, promote and get excited about these guns as they are worth having, shooting and appreciating due to their great balanced round action and features. This grade and higher feature a rising bite third fastener similar to the coveted Rigby rising third bite. The pull back lever behind the trigger guard opens the gun and is extremely ergonomic. It is out of the way and very easy to operate. |

Army & Navy 16g. boxlock ~ very light with long barrels with modern dimensions Boxlocks 16 gauge |
4971 14167 |
|
If you know me at all you know my favorite gauge for the field is 16g. I just returned from shooting wild pheasant and quail in eastern Oregon and I cannot tell you how pleased I was on how my little 16g. performed with 7/8 oz. of shot. If I did my part they dropped dead. No flapping, no running. This little gun, perhaps with a little tuning of the chokes, would make an ideal upland bird gun. This gun was built between 1896 and 1900 so am researching it and if it was made before 1899 we will be able to ship direct to most states instead of to an ffl. |

James Woodward & Sons 20ga. Single Shot ~ Elegance in miniature! From 1898 Boxlocks 20 gauge |
4803 5230 |
|
This is a wonderful little 20g. and by James Woodward to say the least. Actually, that says it all as it is a beautiful gem of the quality we would expect from Woodward. Built about 1898 this gem can be shipped direct. Yes, the stock is short but at four pounds the gun balances and comes up to fit a small person (child undoubtedly) so what a great first gun for the small person in your world. The other option is to have it restocked to fit you! On this type of gun that would not be horribly expensive. |

What a great little double gun. C.S. Rosson was a great maker in Norwich England on Rampant Horse street. Wonder how that street got its name? This gun was built between the great wars in 1933. The LOP could be lengthened with a recoil pad to make the LOP almost 14 5/8". The right side of the action the wood has been properly reinforced with dowels to strengthen the stock. |
