G.E. Lewis Massive 8 bore double "The Gun of The Period" ~ Want a really big gun?
Hammerguns
8 gauge

This is an excellent example of an classic English water fowl double. Nice bores and tight this gun is marsh or turkey terrain ready! (Hey, Hell may freeze over and our politicians may revoke the 8 bore gun ban for water fowl shooting). As I understand it, the law made sense when it was created as their was no harvest limits then but when limits were the new law, the bore size law became obsolete but was never revoked.

Most English double or single 8 bores we get in are basic unadorned lower grade guns but let me be clear this gun is not that way. This gun is much higher quality in all ways. The wood is higher grade, the engraving is exceptional, and the barrels are beautiful and struck perfectly. Their is 16"of lettering down the rib expounding on all the awards this maker has won. This is a golden opportunity to own a high grade English double eight. Remember, their is never anything wrong with having the biggest gun in the room. :)

*Note the great high and modern stock dimension and also the 37" barrels!

* We have some unfired 8 gauge hulls to go with this gun. Free shipping anywhere in the lower 48 states.

Exceptional 12g. 30” barreled Harris Holland of 98 New Bond Street London. Yes, this is the firm as we all know as Holland & Holland. Harris had a nephew Henry Holland which was an apprentice to the firm and when Harris retired in 1876 he took Henry as partner and changed the name to Holland & Holland. Wonderful history but what is really important here is they made and still make some of the best guns in the world. This example is in excellent condition. Featuring 30” highest quality Damascus and much case color and finish remaining, with bores that make mirrors jealous. This example is a gun that one can appreciate for its quality, its history, but most of all for how it feels and swings between the hands. RST shotgun shells would be perfect for this wonderful shotgun. See them at www.rstshells.com. Once you start shooting a quality hammer double you won’t look back. A true bargain .

Some of you know me and that I am attracted to quality Damascus guns. This gun pulled me across the room when I saw it in a rack in England. From that distance I could see it was a shotgun of the highest form without knowing the makers name. Much to my delight I found on close inspection a Stephen Grant, one of my favorite makers. The condition of this fine shotgun is very nice and appears in original condition seeing little if no restoration. There is a small stock extension which we could remove and replace with a fine leather covered pad if one would like for a LOP up to 15 1/2"

Completed in 1903 this is a true Edwardian era gun ( Queen Victoria died in 1901 thank you Austin). The gun is found in an original Grant case which also is in very nice original condition.

Does anyone recognize the family crest in the stock?

William Powell and Son Sidelock in very nice condition in its makers case ~ This is a super deal on an extremely nice English sidelock
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge

James Woodward built a lot of Best guns with 29" barrels and this gun proves that other great makers like William Powell built guns with this barrel length also. I really do like this length as to me it is the best of both worlds. They swing well but are light enough to carry all day.

This Sidelock was once one of pair but the number one gun it seems is lost to time. The near full coverage scroll engraving is very crisp and retains some case color, near 40%. The gun locks up vault tight and the barrels are in very good order. They are bright, ring well. They do show some very light frosting but absolutely no deep pitting of any kind. We can arrange to have this frosting removed to become mirror if your one of those who demands perfection.

The case does appear to be an original Powell case. I note when we took the picture it was when the gun was just unpacked from England. This case will clean up nice and we will do that before the gun ships out.

Surviving company records show our gun was sold to Major S.J. Symons on 14 September 1907. It came back to Powell and was sold 2nd hand on 13 December 1945 to Major H.D. Semist

At six and a half pounds this between the wars sidelock ( @ 1927) would be a joy to carry in the field but not to light to be whippy. The stock dimensions are modern and will fit many well.

This little under six and a half pound London sidelock has great barrels. While a vintage gun the stock dimensions are quite modern and would fit many well. The 14 3/8" length of pull can easily be lengthened up to one inch with a pad for the person that needs an extra long stock.

I love the engraving on this fine double. The near perfect layout is obviously by the hand of a talented and confident artisan.

This gun is a true Edwardian gun dating from the dusk of 1905. With Best quality throughout it is hard to find fault with the dimensions, quality of engraving and barrels. The gun is tight on face and field ready. The wood is very beautiful but could if wanted benefit from a new oil finish and restoration of the checkering.

Some, as in myself in certain circumstances, prefer to use and enjoy the gun with the earned patina of time and use. If one would like to have us restore the wood and checkering I am very pleased to say we can now offer that service with the addition of very talented Jason Bartel to our restoration department. This wood restoration we can now do for an additional price of $1000.00. I guarantee the results will be authentic and outstanding and you will be beyond satisfied or you don't have to pay us a dime for the service.

This Woodward has beautiful engraving and wood. This is the model they called "The Automatic." It was called this because their first model was an automatic self cocking hammer gun. When they went hammerless in about 1880 they kept the name.

I have always appreciated the forward underlever as an opening method. Once you try it a few times you appreciate how ergonomic it is.

This fine sidelock dates from about 1900, right in the middle of the Edwardian period and when some of the best English shotguns were ever produced. This example weeps with the quality this period was capable of.

I love the long 30" barrels and sensible choking. I would perhaps open the right barrel to near cylinder but besides that would not change a thing as the stock dimensions are quite modern with a great LOP.

*Note the beautiful fences and best quality engraving. Hammond is a very old English gun making name. Isaac Hammond opened shop in 1829 and his two sons took over and renamed the business Hammond Brothers in 1878.

Beesley is a very old and respected name in the London gun trade. Frederick started his apprenticeship at William Moore & Grey where I am sure he worked with many of the gun makers from Joseph Manton. Men that helped begin the making of high end and quality double guns. Frederick Beesley is most famous for being the inventor of the self opening mechanism that Purdey adopted in around 1880 and and is still in use by them today.

C&H produced a large number of fair quality but inexpensive boxlocks which I believe resulted in a reputation of lesser priced guns. What is not well known is that they built very nice higher grade and quality guns like the one we are offering here. Whoever gets this gun will be getting a huge amount of quality for their dollars spent.

The factory letter indicates this vintage Smith was finished January 29 1903. I was really interested to see the cost of this gun then, over $115! In 1903 this was a very large amount of money. Adjusting for inflation this would be over $3500 dollars today. A properly dressed gentleman in 1903 would have spent between $7 and $16 on his suit, $1 on each of his dress shirts, around $7 on his topcoat and 48 cents for a fine felt hat.

I really appreciate the 32" full choked barrels. What fun it would be to shoot a big tom turkey for Christmas with this!

We can offer this gun at this super price as it has some rust marks on the outside of the barrels and on the action from being left in a damp case at some point in its life. As you can see in the pictures the marks are very minor and if your looking for a gun to use in the field and appreciate it has a little history this would make a great gun for you. I have always appreciated William Evans shotguns. While they had their guns built for them in the London and Birmingham trade they obviously required a very high standard with details and quality that set them apart from many other makers. This dedication to quality is certainly a factor in why they are still in business today.

16g. Sidelocks are very hard for me to find so I was extremely excited to find this little gem in the UK and bring it across the pond. The non –selective single trigger (believe me that is a good thing, selective triggers are the ones that give single triggers a reputation for failure) is crisp and works perfectly. Choking is perfect for upland hunting or woodcock or southern bobwhites. I love 16g. and I really like this gun.

James Purdey & Sons 20g. with exceptional and breathtaking engraving!
Hammerless Sidelocks
20 gauge

The outstanding thing about this little gun is the extraordinary engraved fences and scroll engraving. This is exceedingly beautiful and extremely rare on a Purdey. According to Purdey records the gun was completed August 15th 1891 for a H.R. Magniac. Our research shows he was a Captain in the Boer war between 1899 and 1902. Records show he was wounded.

This shotgun started life as a 450 BPE Double rifle and was converted to a shotgun via sleeving at some unknown time in England. *Note the sleeving letters on both left and right barrels. With a new blacking job we can have this removed. It would be wonderful (while obviously not necessary) for the next owner to have an extra set of double rifle barrels made for this work of gun art. Purdey estimates around 40K pounds for this service. This sounds like a lot but then again you would have a Purdey double rifle in your chosen caliber for around 60K$.

This would make a great Sporting clays or Vintager competition gun. Being proofed for 2 3/4" it would easily digest many of the American retailed shells. Also unusual about this gun is it is a hammerless gun with a Jones underlever but still features the Beasley patent and Purdey flagship a true self opening mechanism.

I was excited to learn something new about the English gun trade from the Purdey records on this gun. The record says "Scroll detonating" which according to Purdey's indicates the deep chisel fences and possibly was not done by the engraver but by the finisher. Fascinating!

Once a masculine double rifle from 1894 this piece of Scottish gun making history has evolved into a superb almost feminine 20g. sidelock that will please the members of the shooting sports for another 100 years or I hope, even more. I have seen and had many shotguns that were once double rifles but I have to say this is the first that is without doubt a true success. Often this conversion would result in a heavy, club like shotgun but this little beauty is well balanced and comes up beautifully.

Besides handling extremely well, Miss Henry is graced with seriously beautiful wood and outstanding engraving. This butterfly is currently one of my favorite guns in the shop at present.

MacNaughton of Edinburgh Classic Scottish Round Action with Stunningly beautiful and Original Damascus

This is a super elegant round action from Scotland with gorgeous nitro proofed Damascus barrels. Stunning Damascus pattern. Did I mention how beautiful these barrels are?

These trigger plate actions remove a large amount of wood from between the action so to strengthen it this gun has had a pin put cross wise across the head of the stock to prevent cracking. It was professionally and elegantly done with horn covers. The butt has a 1" horn extension.

A super price for a sound and beautiful round action.

Great barrels on this droplock. We can cut the long extension down to any pull you would like shorter to leave a checkered butt. We could also remove the extension and install a best leather pad for a 14" LOP.

If one opened up the right barrel to near cylinder this would make an awesome upland bird gun.

Winchester Model 21 ~ haven't you always wanted one of these? ~
Boxlocks

This gun is tight and field ready. Well, Da! It’s a Model 21! These stout guns were designed and made to last. The IC choke in the left and the cylinder in the right is a great combination for upland birds. It is what I use. It might be great for steel shot also.

When I was in college at WSU and about 20 years old I lusted for one of these which I found in a gunsmiths shop in Pullman Washington. It was about $2000, about six semesters tuition then but a guy could dream. My tastes have changed since then but if your heart yearns for the classic American double gun here is a chance to own one for not much more than I would have had to pay in 1978.

Many in my world have since heard me joke about the best use for a Model 21 being for a boat anchor, or an extra paddle if you lose one... ...but in all seriousness I do respect these guns as I cannot deny they are well made and will digest almost any of the ammunition that can be found on the hardware store shelf. Something I admit many of our English guns cannot do.

Update! Jason and I cannot figure out why we still have this gun as it is in wonderful condition. Sometimes the market makes no sense and our clients miss the bargains. To confirm our suspicions we took this light little English shotgun out to the clay field to put her through her paces. We were both extremely impressed in how well the gun performed and felt so well balanced and so at ease between the hands. This gun is a bargain.

C.S. Rosson was a very well respected maker in England during their day. This is a very nice little 6 1/2 pound game gun which would make a super first English double. It is in very nice original condition, has great stock dimensions, crisp trigger pulls, and is well balanced.

The full choke in the left with cylinder in the right is a common English choking and was effective in driven shooting. If one opens the left barrel to a light modified and leave the right barrel as is this gun would be a fabulous upland bird shotgun. We can arrange for this and the cost is only $70.

These Webley boxlocks are to me like the Winchester Model 21 of England. Well made and stout with the exception that I believe the Webley is actually better balanced in general. This gun with its tight chokes could be used as is for tight and long shooting but remember if you don't want tight chokes we can have the chokes opened to anything you would want for only $70.00 per barrel.

The 2 3/4" Nitro proofed chambers make this gun very versatile in the USA. The semi beaver tail forend I believe to be added later in the guns life, probably while here in the USA. This addition has obviously been done professionally as it is extremely well done.

As you can see in the pictures this Manufrance is in wonderful original condition having seen very little if any use. The only negative I see is a little light pitting on the outside of the barrels from I suspect a damp case somewhere in its past. The case colors are near 100%!

< Manufrance used the mono-block barrel design to build what we now know from the Italian designs to be one of the strongest methods out there. You can see this in the pictures where the barrel has a slight step 3" from the breech.

This gun is extremely tight. It operates like it was never completely broken in it is so tight.

The chokes are very tight but remember for only $70 per tube we can open them to anything you would want down to cylinder. If you use as is this would make a tremendous turkey gun!

Someone carried and loved this gun. The checkering on the forend and the butt has nearly been worn off! When I was first offered this gun I did not at first look think I would want it. I obviously changed my mind as I found the gun tight on face with nice bores. The trigger pulls were good. The wall thickness was great and the barrels still had all their choke. In other words, this gun is ready to go and will give many more years of faithful service! Its like the 20 year old horse we had that went on to live to over thirty! Looks can be deceptive. ? Use the gun as is as a great backup gun or do an easy restoration. It is up to you. Either way this is a great gun for this kind of money.

Built in the late 1880's this lever cocking boxlock is really quite a beautiful gun. For a gun of this period it has many features such as the Purdey double under bite, an extra bite in the rib extension similar to the Westley Richards patent and also unique cocking indicators. The gun is tight and ready for the field.

While the bores show some light pitting/haze they are basically bright and have tons of wall thickness so this could be removed with a back bore if one wanted mirror bores.

This gun has a fairly short length of pull but could be made to 14 3/8" with a 1" recoil pad.

Built on a unique but 100% trigger plate action this is a gun that I have always been intrigued with. I like everything about them except for the safe which is located to the right and left of the trigger guard. It functions fine but I don't find them as ergonomic as the top safe.

So, despite the safety, I still shoot, promote and get excited about these guns as they are worth having, shooting and appreciating due to their great balanced round action and features. This grade and higher feature a rising bite third fastener similar to the coveted Rigby rising third bite. The pull back lever behind the trigger guard opens the gun and is extremely ergonomic. It is out of the way and very easy to operate.

Very pretty wood (a restock) on this little Ideal with nice long barrels. This grade does not feature the rising bite featured on some higher grade Ideal guns but it does have the classic double under-bite with the true trigger plate action. I see some epoxy bedding material in places where the wood meets the action but this will not in anyway affect performance and allows us to sell this gun at a much reduced price.

There is some light pitting in the bores which could be removed but if it were me I would take this light lady afield just as she is and enjoy her doing what she does best.

This Charles Boswell dates from the early 1880's. It is suspected that Boswell started his serial number records at 10,000 which would make this example a very early gun. Very few of these early Boswell guns have survived.

Unfortunately this example was poorly cared for and someone let the inside of the barrels get quite pitted. The good news is someone in its past spent near a thousand dollars to have Briley full length 20 gauge tubes installed resulting in bringing this old dame back to life. With the high stock this would make a great Vintagers competition gun or a hammer sporting clays gun.

Superb condition on this classic. The gun retains much original case color and the bore is clean and bright. The last owner could not stop talking about how accurate this double rifle is!

We have some loading data for his accurate loads to go with this rifle. Give me a call or email me and I will go over them for you.

The original load was 110g. Curtis & Harvey with a 300g. bullet #6 . This produced 1824-199 FPS. He said the gun was originally regulated for 110G Curtis & Harvey black powder and a 300 grain bullet. He was shooting a nitro for black load using IMR 4198. Two he said that was very accurate shooting 1.5” groups: 42-46 g. IMR 41-98 with a copper .458 Barnes “x”bullet Another 46g. Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge

This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

Winchester Model 21 ~ haven't you always wanted one of these? ~
Left-handed Guns

L.C. Smith 2E with factory letter documenting original 32" barrels!

James Purdey & Sons 20g. with exceptional and breathtaking engraving!

Great stock dimensions, barrel walls, and nitro proofs make this little 20 a winner. Good twenty bore hammer guns have always been really hard to find so I was very pleased to have this one come in the shop.

*Note the excellent wall thickness on this gun.

I do make exception with over and under shotguns when it comes to the pre-war London guns. They in general handle like an extension of ones own body. When we got this gun in I had to shoot it that day. Jason and I both shot it well. It feels so wonderful between the hands and swings as it is an extension of yourself. This is superb price for this gun. Built in 1911, a true Edwardian gun.
