A very original and rare double this Boss is a true find. The wall thickness is excellent although there is considerable pitting in the bores. It is possible with this great wall thickness the barrels could be back bored and have the pitting removed.

This is a classic hammer side lever which I find extremely ergonomic and easy to use. This gun handles extremely well having that wonderful "aliveness" between the hands.

There is some light pitting in the bores which was present when it was nitro proofed and please note the excellent minimum wall thickness. The bores are bright.

The stock dimensions are very modern and excellent for most. For you tall folks the LOP could be made up to 15 3/8" simply by removing the butt plate and adding a 1" leather covered or English style pad.

*No FFL required so we can ship direct to you at home.

* Note the trigger guard has a well done and strong repair near where it threads into the action. We at vintage doubles want to hide nothing. Remember we are offering during the corona virus free shipping and free return shipping on all of our guns and with a five day inspection (and longer if you need it, we are flexible).

What a beautiful English hammer double. Bar action hammer doubles are getting so much harder to find it was a pleasure to have this one come in the shop.

The smokey french walnut is stunning. The barrel bores are bright and shiny and have excellent wall thickness. The gun locks up vault tight and would be a great candidate for the RST low pressure 2 1/2" shells. Go to www.rstshells.com and check out the great selection. The stock dimensions are very modern and great for most.

J. D. Dougal was quite an individual. He had many innovations in the gunmakers trade while also having a line of pubs and brewery's!

Holland & Holland Top Lever Back Action ~ An excellent 16g. Hammer gun for clays or field ~ Sale!
Hammerguns
16 gauge

This gun started life as a Paradox but now has been made exclusively a shotgun. For those that are not familiar with the Holland paradox guns they were shotguns that also worked as rifles featuring rifling in the last few inches of the bore. As many found the rifling interfered with perfect shot patterns they would have the rifling removed to make them a better shotgun and that is what has been done with classic Holland 16g.

This Holland features excellent stock dimensions and handles very nicely, feeling lighter than its true weight. This would make an excellent 16g to participate in Vintager events and also work well for upland hunting over pointing dogs.

This is a classic French Lefaucheux action with English nitro proofs. The interesting thing is that it was certainly made in France, Germany, or perhaps Belgium but we can find nothing but the English nitro proofs on the gun. Their is no makers name on the gun.

There is some minor pitting in the bores but nothing really deep. The wall thickness is massive so one could have it back bored to remove the pitting or shoot it the way it is.

This is a very attractive and quality hammer double for this kind of money. I love the elegant hammers!

The Bores are bright and shiny with a few pits in the right barrel towards the muzzle but in proof and nothing deep

Note the weight! And now have pictures of the gun in the vintage Dickson correct vintage case.

Holland & Holland Sidelock from 1906, cased with great dimension and barrels ~ Own a Holland!
Hammerless Sidelocks

Factory records show this fine Holland left their shop May 4 1906. This makes it a true Edwardian shotgun. It is listed as a #2 grade which people in the know means it is of the quality of the Royal grade but without the full coverage engraving. I am sure I will get some other opinions on this but I have had many Royal grade guns over the years and also this grade and on the inside the design, fit and finish, are identical. I would be glad to provide interior pictures of the beautiful bar action locks.

A long LOP which could be made near an inch longer with a new leather covered pad. We can arrange for this. The drop at heel and comb are modern and fit many shooters. The checkering and the wood are in excellent condition. I particularly like the 30" steel barrels with sensible choking that will put birds in the bag.< P> Overall an excellent English sidelock with a deserved name synonymous for quality.

Some of you know me and that I am attracted to quality Damascus guns. This gun pulled me across the room when I saw it in a rack in England. From that distance I could see it was a shotgun of the highest form without knowing the makers name. Much to my delight I found on close inspection a Stephen Grant, one of my favorite makers. The condition of this fine shotgun is very nice and appears in original condition seeing little if no restoration. There is a small stock extension which we could remove and replace with a fine leather covered pad if one would like for a LOP up to 15 1/2"

Completed in 1903 this is a true Edwardian era gun ( Queen Victoria died in 1901 thank you Austin). The gun is found in an original Grant case which also is in very nice original condition.

Does anyone recognize the family crest in the stock?

This is an incredibly original gun that I think for the first time ever we found the original invoice from the gun in the case. Speaking of case, check out the case colors on this gun, all original and from November 1st 1935! This gun is a time warp, an incredible opportunity.

The real bonus besides the condition is the modern stock dimensions. At 6 lbs. 2 oz. this would make an incredible woodcock, quail, or grouse gun. I also know it would hold its own in the upland fields and cliff sides after Hungarian partridge and chukar.

This is a super elegant round action from Scotland with gorgeous nitro proofed Damascus barrels. Stunning Damascus pattern. Did I mention how beautiful these barrels are?

These trigger plate actions remove a large amount of wood from between the action so to strengthen it this gun has had a pin put cross wise across the head of the stock to prevent cracking. It was professionally and elegantly done with horn covers. The butt has a 1" horn extension.

A super price for a sound and beautiful round action.

Stephen Grant. He worked for Boss for awhile and then gave his notice, moved next door, and hung his shingle. In not long he was counted among England's greatest gunmakers. It is said Boss and Grant were on good terms and often shared work when one needed help. I observed an example of this once when I found some filers initials on a Grant that looked familiar. I realized I had seen them on a Boss that I had!

This is a super example of what Grant could do and at a very attractive price. Note the 2 3/4" nitro proofs.

William Powell and Son Sidelock in very nice condition in its makers case ~ This is a super deal on an extremely nice English sidelock
Hammerless Sidelocks

James Woodward built a lot of Best guns with 29" barrels and this gun proves that other great makers like William Powell built guns with this barrel length also. I really do like this length as to me it is the best of both worlds. They swing well but are light enough to carry all day.

This Sidelock was once one of pair but the number one gun it seems is lost to time. The near full coverage scroll engraving is very crisp and retains some case color, near 40%. The gun locks up vault tight and the barrels are in very good order. They are bright, ring well. They do show some very light frosting but absolutely no deep pitting of any kind. We can arrange to have this frosting removed to become mirror if your one of those who demands perfection.

The case does appear to be an original Powell case. I note when we took the picture it was when the gun was just unpacked from England. This case will clean up nice and we will do that before the gun ships out.

Surviving company records show our gun was sold to Major S.J. Symons on 14 September 1907. It came back to Powell and was sold 2nd hand on 13 December 1945 to Major H.D. Semist

We have had a few Charles Ingram guns over the years and I have always admired them. They were consistently of exceptional quality. I have heard in the trade they were best known in England and Scotland for their exceptional rifles but strangely enough I have never seen or possessed one, only shotguns.

This nicely cased sidelock is in wonderful condition. The rose and scroll engraving is exceptional.

For those of you that perceive you do not like shorter barrels (these are 26") I would love to put this gun in your hands to shoulder and swing. The way that it is balanced it feels like you’re swinging a long barreled gun! I have often heard woman say that length does not matter (Why were they telling me this?) and I think that in this case at least that us men should believe them.

Beesley is a very old and respected name in the London gun trade. Men that helped begin the making of high end and quality double guns. Frederick Beesley is most famous for being the inventor of the self opening mechanism that Purdey adopted in around 1880 and and is still in use by them today.

This gun is a true Edwardian gun dating from the dusk of 1905. With Best quality throughout it is hard to find fault with the dimensions, quality of engraving and barrels. The gun is tight on face and field ready. The wood is very beautiful but could if wanted benefit from a new oil finish and restoration of the checkering.

Some, as in myself in certain circumstances, prefer to use and enjoy the gun with the earned patina of time and use. If one would like to have us restore the wood and checkering I am very pleased to say we can now offer that service with the addition of very talented Jason Bartel to our restoration department. This wood restoration we can now do for an additional price of $1000.00. Built in 1937 this little between the wars beauty is in very nice condition. She features very tight on face steel barrels with excellent wall thickness and chokes. The stock dimensions being quite modern are perfect for many. This action features assisted opening.

C&H produced a large number of fair quality but inexpensive boxlocks which I believe resulted in a reputation of lesser priced guns. What is not well known is that they built very nice higher grade and quality guns like the one we are offering here. Whoever gets this gun will be getting a huge amount of quality for their dollars spent.

Army & Navy Sidelock from about 1896 with wonderful steel barrels and stock dimensions

This is a very nice English sidelock. Made for J.Harrison Esquire on 25th of June in 1897 for 20 pounds, She is tight on face with barrels that ring well and have excellent wall thickness. It is quite possible this gun was London built as it has its original London proof marks on the barrel flats.

The Bores on this fine shotgun are extremely bright and shiny with no pitting or dents that we can see. The stock dimensions are excellent for many with a sensible choice of choking. This would make someone and excellent first English shotgun.

This is a well made gun but has had some stock modifications done by a professional to fit a specific shooter. It would make a great restock project or just shoot it as it is. The current dimensions are very modern. It would also for the artisan be fun to try grain painting and make the stock changes invisible.

I have always appreciated William Evans shotguns. While they had their guns built for them in the London and Birmingham trade they obviously required a very high standard with details and quality that set them apart from many other makers. This dedication to quality is certainly a factor in why they are still in business today.

16g. Sidelocks are very hard for me to find so I was extremely excited to find this little gem in the UK and bring it across the pond. The non –selective single trigger (believe me that is a good thing, selective triggers are the ones that give single triggers a reputation for failure) is crisp and works perfectly. Choking is perfect for upland hunting or woodcock or southern bobwhites. I love 16g. and I really like this gun.

Boss 20g. Sidelock in exceptional condition and investment grade original. Featuring 28”whitworth steel barrels, 75% case color, 98% blue, in its makers case. This petite flower weighs in at 5 lbs. 4.5 oz., lighter than many 28 gauges. Stocked to the fences, assisted opening, iconic and crisp Boss single trigger, chopper-lump barrels, and stunning wood with super dimensions, this Boss has all and more of what we would expect from a Boss. What I expect most of all from Boss is what I think is their true trade mark, “Balance.” Let me tell you, get this gun between your hands and you will not want to let it go as you would feel your letting go of a part of yourself.

Twenty gauge Boss doubles are like prime real estate. They seldom come up for sale, are priced at the top of the market, and there are never any regrets in owning as they are always worth what you paid and more. A solid investment at $57000.00

Alex Henry has found new life as a 20g shotgun! What a lovely little gun this has become
Hammerless Sidelocks

Once a masculine double rifle from 1894 this piece of Scottish gun making history has evolved into a superb almost feminine 20g. sidelock that will please the members of the shooting sports for another 100 years or I hope, even more. I have seen and had many shotguns that were once double rifles but I have to say this is the first that is without doubt a true success. Often this conversion would result in a heavy, club like shotgun but this little beauty is well balanced and comes up beautifully.

Besides handling extremely well, Miss Henry is graced with seriously beautiful wood and outstanding engraving. This butterfly is currently one of my favorite guns in the shop at present.

This appears to be a very well made look alike of a Holland & Holland Royal. For a 28 gauge sidelock that takes 2 3/4" shells I do admit that this is a super value, especially as in this case where the gun is in near new condition.

You have probably heard me say this before but finding extremely original English guns in high condition is becoming near impossible. The good news is once in a while we get a gun in that is in fantastic original condition. This is one of those guns.

Weighing less than some English 2" guns this gun balances extremely well with a very lively feeling between the hands. The case color is near 90%, the wood finish 90%, the barrel black 80%.

This gun has its original case and hang tag which interestingly enough mentions that the gun was tested with American ammunition. Sold to an American? The original case shows considerable wear but the gun also comes with a Huey style oak & leather case with French fitted tools making an extremely attractive package and a seriously sound investment.

Westley Richards Droplock ~ Check this Westley out! Considered the very best of the hand detachable lock double shotguns

Built @1903 this Westley features great choking, engraving, and wood. She is tight on face and ready for the field and at a very attractive price.

If you are unfamiliar with the Westley droplock it is the flag ship of the Westley history and line of guns. It is the most simple and well designed double with hand detachable locks. One only has to push a button and then pull the locks out. Nothing to unscrew like on the Holland royal guns.

“A Westley Richards firearm is a piece of art...a masterpiece of the gunmaker's craft.”Robin Hurt, Professional hunter, 2015

This German gun has great full coverage engraving, side clips, cocking indicators, and extra grade wood work. Ivory inlays on the forend and drop points are a nice touch. I notice an ever so slight bulge behind the left choke only noticeable to a professional and should not be of concern. With a re-blue this could be removed completely.

Built on a unique but 100% trigger plate action this is a gun that I have always been intrigued with. I like everything about them except for the safe which is located to the right and left of the trigger guard. It functions fine but I don't find them as ergonomic as the top safe.

So, despite the safety, I still shoot, promote and get excited about these guns as they are worth having, shooting and appreciating due to their great balanced round action and features. This grade and higher feature a rising bite third fastener similar to the coveted Rigby rising third bite. The pull back lever behind the trigger guard opens the gun and is extremely ergonomic. It is out of the way and very easy to operate.

Upland hunters pay attention. This is a very sound, strong, well made English boxlock for a super price. At only 6 lbs. 9 oz. she would be a pleasure to carry all day. Better than to just carry, this little gun was built to swing on flighting birds. She balances just forward of the hinge pin on the iron resulting in an ever so light barrel weight forward... ...what many of us consider the perfect gun balance. Note the gun is cased in a vintage but solid English canvas case with trade label, cleaning rod, and cleaning ends, and snap caps.

C.S. Rosson was a very well respected maker in England during their day. This is a very nice little 6 1/2 pound game gun which would make a super first English double. It is in very nice original condition, has great stock dimensions, crisp trigger pulls, and is well balanced.

The full choke in the left with cylinder in the right is a common English choking and was effective in driven shooting. If one opens the left barrel to a light modified and leave the right barrel as is this gun would be a fabulous upland bird shotgun. We can arrange for this and the cost is only $70.

Yes, the sleeve line shows (a re-blue would help with this). The old lady has some wrinkles but not many I can see considering she was put together in 1883!.

Jason and I were in basin shooting feedlot pigeons last Saturday. At 5:30 in the morning I had to pick what guns to take ( I always take two, one should always have a back up). I without hesitation took my old standby and then thought "What have I seen in the shop I would like to shoot?"

I had the choice of some Boss guns, and a couple of Purdey's and Hollands but my mind came back to this old Dougal sidelever I had recently come through the door. She was my choice. Sometimes the most expensive gun in the shop is not my choice and neither should it need to be yours.

Beesley is a very old and respected name in the London gun trade. Frederick started his apprenticeship at William Moore & Grey where I am sure he worked with many of the gun makers from Joseph Manton. Men that helped begin the making of high end and quality double guns. Frederick Beesley is most famous for being the inventor of the self opening mechanism that Purdey adopted in around 1880 and and is still in use by them today. This boxlock is tight and field ready and quite a deal for a London gun.

This vintage Westley has barrels with excellent wall thickness. It is perfectly tight on face. Being built between 1890 and 1891 we can ship direct as it is antique.

If some one could use a 14 3/8" LOP we could remove the current pads and put a nice new "Old English" or leather covered pad on the gun which would look very nice.

Of the early Westley guns I like this model as it has the elegance of the early guns but features the Purdey double under bite. Guns before this often only had one or no bites on the under lug which was not near as strong as the design on this gun.

A solid English waterfowl gun with great dimensions for a fair price. Do I need say more?

The original proof marks are 3" for a 1 1/2" load and it was recently reproofed for 2 3/4" which I know makes no sense. Consulting with proof experts, we believe that the gun is out of the original proof in the right barrel by only one thousandths so it was resubmitted for new proof and the proof house screwed up and marked it for 2 3/4" instead of 3" accidentally. Proof house employees are government employees who are human just like the rest of us and make mistakes. The thing too remember is this is a very strong gun!

This gun has a lot to offer for the price. Wood worthy of a Boss or Purdey for one. It is tight on face and ready to shoot. There is honest engraving wear showing this old girl has spent a considerable amount of time afield.

I detect and old stock repair in the wrist that has been expertly done and reinforced with an extended top tang. It was so well done it was only because of the extended tang that I was able to figure it out as it is virtually impossible to see without magnification and in just the right light.

Someone carried and loved this gun. The checkering on the forend and the butt has nearly been worn off! When I was first offered this gun I did not at first look think I would want it. I obviously changed my mind as I found the gun tight on face with nice bores. The trigger pulls were good. The wall thickness was great and the barrels still had all their choke. In other words, this gun is ready to go and will give many more years of faithful service! Its like the 20 year old horse we had that went on to live to over thirty! Looks can be deceptive. ? Use the gun as is as a great backup gun or do an easy restoration. It is up to you. Either way this is a great gun for this kind of money.

@ 1901 This classic Lancaster has their famous assisted opening action. It works very well and also has very strong auto ejectors. The gun is tight on face. The bores have some very fine haze or pitting but be assured it is very minor and easily removed if one would want to go to the trouble.

The only real negative about this shotgun is she is plain as Jane next door but what do you want for only $1000?

Very pretty wood (a restock) on this little Ideal with nice long barrels. This grade does not feature the rising bite featured on some higher grade Ideal guns but it does have the classic double under-bite with the true trigger plate action. I see some epoxy bedding material in places where the wood meets the action but this will not in anyway affect performance and allows us to sell this gun at a much reduced price.

There is some light pitting in the bores which could be removed but if it were me I would take this light lady afield just as she is and enjoy her doing what she does best.

Do you like French wine and food like myself? If so you might consider a classic French double. The Manufrance "Ideal" with its amazing rising bite is a great choice.

Nicely restocked with good dimensions, great wall thickness, and solid chokes, this true trigger plate round action has a lot to offer. There is very light pitting in the bores which could easily be removed (or left and shoot it as is as I would do). Featuring the classic "eye glass" trigger guard and nice long 29" chopper lump barrels. I love how these guns open by pulling back on the lever behind the trigger guard which is very ergonomic.

If you know me, you will know I love these guns. Give me a call and I would be glad to let you know why.

This great little 20g. has wonderful stock dimensions and chokes that will put birds in your bag. The gun is tight on face and field ready. There is some light pitting near the muzzles inside both barrels but nothing deep and because of this we can offer this little English beauty at a very attractive price.

William Richards, often confused with Westley Richards, was a well established and respected gun maker in Liverpool who opened his business in 1780. My research shows the business under that name was open to at least 1996. That is 216 years!

Located at 91 Albion Street in Leeds England Linsley Brothers built this little 20 gauge in 1941. In the heat of WWII German bombing it is wonderful to see that English gun making was not at a standstill.

This example is tight on face and field ready. A recoil pad can easily be added for a 14 1/8" LOP or wouldn't it be perfect as is for a first double for a younger son or daughter or grandchild.

Great stock dimensions and with 14 1/2" original wood. For the tall we could add a pad for up to 15 1/2" LOP!

We have had many Linsley shotguns over the years and they were all very well made. This is an excellent example. I find the 5 lbs. 10 oz. weight just right for a 20g as some that are near five pounds are just to whippy and easy to stop the gun so they don't handle well. This gun handles super and she is tight on face and field ready.

Don't be deterred by the Cylinder open choking. I use a gun like this for all my grouse and quail hunting and since I have done that I have put way more birds in the bag.

Great choking, barrel wall thickness, stock dimensions, and balance. So why is it priced so low? Pitting, quite a lot in the left barrel towards the muzzle. The first half of the barrels where the high pressures are have very little pitting. We measured the gun and it is well in proof. It is possible one could send it to Skeet's and have them remove .010 from the barrel and it all would all go away. Or maybe not.

The gun is tight on face and sound in every other way. Please don't call and ask me to ship this gun out hoping the barrels are better than what I have described. I have described them accurately. Free shipping during this Corona virus crisis.

This exceptional and rare Model 21 is in basically new condition. The last owner never fired it and when he purchased it was told it was unfired also. This gun is what in the model 21 collector world was called a gift gun. These were guns built in the Winchester factory on direction of the CEO or manager to be presented as a gift from someone or department of the Winchester Arms Company. It is believed this particular example was built as a gift from John Olin to the then President of Yale. See the photo's here of the original work orders.

What a rare opportunity this is and in the spirit of its origin would make such a wonderful gift to another collector or to pass down to a sporting son or daughter establishing a family legacy.

This is a very nice drilling for this kind of money. The rifle while not to be confused with its big brother the 9.3x74R this 9.3x72R is a versatile cartridge ideal for what it was designed for ... ...shooting deer in brushy or forested habitat. It is very easy to reload.

The shotgun barrels are excellent, very bright and clean. The action is tight and field ready. The bore of the rifle has grayed but the rifling is very strong. We have fired the rifle and found it quite accurate.

Note that the gun while having a cheek piece on the right side is slightly cast for a right handed shooter so the gun can be used by a right handed or left handed person.

This rifle shows honest field use with a good number of handling marks with minor cosmetic ware and tear. Undoubtedly from years of hunting red stag in the Scottish Highlands. I have been there and honestly it is very rough, rocky and steep. The weather there is not what one would call like paradise. It is obvious the owner did know how important bore care was as the bore is quite nice and bright with sharp rifling.

If you like a rifle that shows its patina of history while still being highly effective in the field this could be the rifle for you!

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge

This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

Army & Navy 20g. ~ A great little shooter for a nice price

This is a wonderful and higher grade example of what the famous French company could do. The stock dimensions are good for most and the gun balances well for its super light weight.

Dart is priceless and covers the dog and bird hunting aspects of Vintagedoubles. He is our hero in the field, being an incredible pointer with the best nose of any dog I have ever hunted over. We seem to have a problem keeping him off the kitchen counters if there are any tasty morsels left there.... ....No one is perfect!

Great stock dimensions, barrel length, and beautiful wood. What more could you want? Well ok, you folks that get all hung up on choke might overlook this beauty. When you go to the pattern board and pattern a cylinder gun you will be shocked at how well the pattern is even out to 25 yards!

German hammer Drilling in 16/16 over 9.3x72R rifle ~ Features wonderful game scene engraving
