This great eight is in great condition! Still some case color left in places the gun is tight and on face. Field ready for what? I think they are legal for Turkey hunting!

Just plain fun to have in the gun room this behemoth is not a delicate flower but a very likable brut! We have enjoyed having this in the shop to show off but know it is your lucky turn to share with your friends.

This is a stout Prussian Daly built by G. Lindner. His guns are considered some of the best sporting guns produced by Germany during his time. I would estimate this gun to be built in the early 1890's.

This gun locks up vault tight with excellent Damascus barrels which are nice and bright with only an extremely light frost on the inside. *Note the beautiful Damascus pattern!

Beautiful bright clean bores with long forcing cones

This shotgun is in outstanding condition, tight on face, and field ready. There is about 30% case color remaining and the blacking on the barrels is in the 98% or better. All engraving, including the name and address on the rib is as crisp as the day it was cut.

This is the classic Premier London "Best" with the pinless sidelocks. While built in 1910 this example in excellent field ready condition. The gun features chopperlump barrels, beautiful wood, and great stock dimensions for most. She is tight and field ready. Only thing I might consider is opening the right to IC or Cylinder if I was going to use it for upland birds. This is not expensive, less than $100.00.

I might note that finding a 30" barreled Churchill is very rare as most were built with 25"barrels.

This hansom Purdey is in lovely condition considering her age. Great stock dimensions for many and bright shiny bores.

This gun was proofed for 2 1/2" but because for many years 2 1/2" shells were not available in America its chamber was lengthened to 2 3/4" so it could be continued to be used here in the USA.

*Comes with Purdey letter and copy of original ledger. Also note the exceptional stock dimensions, minimum wall thickness, and great choke choices.

This is a beautiful Purdey with stunning renewed case colors and spectacular wood with a very long LOP. I was informed this gun has a super strong invisible wrist repair to pass along what I know about the gun.

It is well in proof nitro 2 3/4" and very tight on face. Own a beautiful Purdey for less than half the price of a similar vintage gun with original barrels.

What a beautiful example of the classic Stephen Grant with a sidelever from 1893. Note the excellent barrel walls and the good stock dimensions. If you don't care for the small wood extension we can have it replaced with a leather covered pad.

Every year it is getting harder and harder to find guns in their original makers case so it was very exciting to find this gun still with its case.

This gun features nitro proofed 30" barrels with mirror bores. Other features include auto ejectors, tight on face barrels to action, and excellent modern stock dimensions cut from a very nice piece of English walnut. The left choke is tighter than many (like me) might want it but remember we can have chokes opened very reasonably. Also, if you need a longer LOP we can provide excellent English style leather covered pads up to 1".

This is a very nice example of an English sidelock. It is well balanced and feels great between the hands as any well made gun should.

I did not know much of this maker so I did some sleuthing on internet and actually found quite a lot:

Built between 1901 and 1905 by address's on rib William Atkinson was the son of Joseph Atkinson of Lancaster. He was born in 1851. By 1871 William had joined his father in the business in Lancaster, but in about 1874 he opened his own business at 52 Stricklandgate, Kendal, Westmoreland; in about 1878 this moved to 8 All Hallows Lane. There may have been a branch of the firm in Preston. In 1874 William and his wife (Eleanor b. 1850) had a son, Joseph Harvey Atkinson, and in 1876 another, Arthur Falder Atkinson (both born in Kendal), they both worked in the business as gunmaker's assistants, there were also had two daughters born in Kendal, Edith (b.1873) and Maud (b.1878) who appear to have worked in the business. In 1881 Joseph Atkinson retired and William took over the business in Lancaster re-naming it William Atkinson. In about 1885 the firm moved to 20 Market Street, between 1890 and 1901 they took over the adjoining premises at 18 Market Street. Between 1890 and 1894 the business in Kendal moved to 58 Highgate. Joseph Atkinson died in the late 1890s, and in 1900 the firm Lancaster business was re-named William Atkinson & Sons. By this time the firm had a substantial trade in bicycles. In about 1901 a branch was opened at 11 Skipton Street, Morecambe, Lancashire. This was probably run by one of the sons, it appears to have closed in about 1905. Between 1901 and 1905 the Kendal business became known as Atkinson & Griffin, it appears to have ceased trading in 1925. Between about 1905 and 1909 the firm in Lancaster occupied premises in North Road. In about 1935 the firm moved to 26 Market Street, Lancaster, but the Lancaster business appears to have closed in 1940. In 1955 Thomas Atkinson & Sons was recorded at 19a Stricklandgate, Kendal. Thomas Atkinson was certainly related, perhaps only distantly. The firm appears to have closed in about 1985.

Great barrels on this classic Birmingham boxlock. I really appreciate the Prince of Wales semi pistol grip. They feel so natural in the hands.

Built in 1938. Note the modern dimensions for rising birds. Pheasant? Sporting Clays! Yes!

We found this in the back of the vault and thought we should find a home for it. Actually tight on face and in proof. The bores are bright and shiny. The minimal wall thickness is thicker than most in fact very thick for this vintage shotgun.

That's the good points! Sadly the barrels in the second half towards the muzzle have considerable pitting probably caused by being put away wet in a case. The stock has numerous handling marks. The wood could be easily refinished but striking the barrels you may only get about 80% of the pitting. Or you might get it all. It is very functional as is so I would use it as a rainy day gun and do nothing to it!

Built on a unique but 100% trigger plate action this is a gun that I have always been intrigued with. I like everything about them except for the safe which is located to the right and left of the trigger guard. It functions fine but I don't find them as ergonomic as the top safe.

So, despite the safety, I still shoot, promote and get excited about these guns as they are worth having, shooting and appreciating due to their great balanced round action and features. This grade and higher feature a rising bite third fastener similar to the coveted Rigby rising third bite. The pull back lever behind the trigger guard opens the gun and is extremely ergonomic. It is out of the way and very easy to operate.

When a double is a side by side with a shotgun on one side and a rifle on the other we call it a cape gun. I have been told this is because the farmers in South Africa, near the Cape Horn, liked these combo guns for their farms. When a combo gun has the over and under orientation it is called a combo gun.

This example is very nice, tight on face, and field ready.

I love this rifle! This would make an outstanding stalking rifle. I love the outside hammer and the overall originality. The gun is extremely well balanced and would be a joy to carry.

The rifling is strong with gray frosting (fine pitting) between. This cleans up and gets much better toward the muzzle. The Cordite load listed on the barrel is 30 gr. Cordite for a 300 gr. Bullet.

Alex Martin 7mm Mauser by Alex Martin of Glasgow Scotland ~ Classic English features

Nice bore on this classic. Note the bolt peep like one would see on a Rigby, the three folding safari style rear express sights and also the fold over hooded front sight with a night site!

Some info from the Internet Gun Club, which is run by many English shotgun collectors and this is what was listed.

There are reports that the firm of Alexander Martin was established in 1778. There were three cutlers and / or gun makers named Alexander Martin, this date appears to refer to the grandfather of the man who made the name of Alexander Martin famous around the world. Alexander (I) was a cutler and possibly also a gunmaker, a burgess and guild brother in Paisley, about 7 miles from the centre of Glasgow. In 1742 he was recorded as a journeyman with John Hyndman. He married Mary Telpher on 15 September 1773. His son, Alexander (II), was born in 1791 in Paisley, and almost certainly worked for his father. He appears to have married in about 1814, and was later recorded living in Paisley with his wife (known only as W Martin, born in 1796), their elder son, Allen (b.1815) who does not appear to have entered into the gun trade, Alexander (III) (b.1816), and Elizabeth (b.1826). Alexander (II) and Alexander (III) became hammermen, burgesses and guild brothers on 22 July 1835, aged 35 and 19 respectively, this must have been almost immediately after Alexander (I) died. They were admitted to the Incorporation on 28 August that year and both their "essays" were gun main springs. It appears that Alexander (II) established his business in 1835 at 153 Trongate, Glasgow. He and Alexander (III) traded as gunmakers, fishing rod and tackle manufacturers. It also appears that they left Glasgow to return to Paisley in 1837. Alexander (II) was recorded in the 1841 census living at 28 Oakshaw Road, Paisley, but he was not recorded in any census after that date. Alexander (III) returned to Glasgow in 1837 to establish the famous firm Alexander Martin gunmaking firm at 179 Argyll Street. In 1842 he moved to 181 Argyll Street, and in 1844 to 18 Exchange Square. In 1848 the firm took additional premises next door at 20 Exchange Square (later re-named Royal Exchange Square). In the 1851 census Alexander (III) lived at 96 North Hanover Street, Glasgow with his wife Isabella (b.1826 in Glasgow), no children were recorded. In 1852 the firm's address was given as 20 Exchange Square, but they may also have occupied number 18. In 1854 Alexander Martin described himself as a gunmaker and cast steel rifle barrel manufacturer. In 1856 the firm moved to 28 Exchange Square, and in 1861 to 22 Exchange Square. In the 1861 census Alexander was recorded living at 3 Rose Street, a gunmaker employing 5 men and one boy. Nobody else was living in the house. In 1862 the firm was recorded at 20 Royal Exchange Square. In 1863 he described himself as a gun and rifle maker. Between 1886 and 1890 the firm's address was given as 22 Royal Exchange Square, but it would seem that they continued to occupy 20 Royal Exchange Square. Their address in about 1893 was 20 Royal Exchange Square. In about 1897 the firm described themselves as gun makers and makers of pistols, sportsmen's implements, fishing rods and tackle, they were also taxidermists. it was in about 1897 that a branch was established at 128 Union Street, Aberdeen. In about 1901 the firm's address in Glasgow was 20 & 22 Royal Exchange Square. In 1902 the firm amalgamated with Alexander Henry & Co of 18 Frederick Street, Edinburgh; both firms continued trading under their own names from the same shops with the exception of the Edinburgh shop which moved to 22 Frederick Street and traded under both names. In about 1934 a branch was opened under the name of Alex Martin at 2 Friars Street, Stirling, and in about 1938 their Aberdeen shop moved to 25 Bridge Street. It is unlikely that the firm made any guns themselves after 1939, during the 1950s and early 1960s most of their guns were made by A A Brown & Sons of Birmingham. In about 1950 the company were armourers to the Scottish Rifle Association and a small shop was opened at Bisley in Surrey, possibly in the Scottish Rifle Association's clubhouse. It was in about 1950 that the Stirling shop and the Edinburgh shop closed. The firm was latterly run by Sandy Martin, but in 1965 it was sold to John Dickson & Son Ltd. A number of historical items were put into the "Martin Collection" at the Glasgow museum. In 1971 John Dickson moved the Aberdeen shop to 35 Belmont Street where it continued to trade as Alexander Martin until it closed in 1985. The Glasgow shop closed in 1988. The firm made its name through success at target shooting. They made Lee-Metford and Lee-Enfield target rifles, breech-loading .256 calibre match rifles, and target rifle sights. The firm's trade mark was a thistle surrounded by two leaves. They developed a lightweight "ribless" shotgun (three short sections of rib at the muzzle, centre and breech) but because of increased recoil due to the light weight, it did not prove popular. The records of the firm date only from 1904, previous records have ben lost. Internet Gun Club has details of serial numbers and dates, further information is available from John Dickson & Son, THE STEADING, DUNKELD HOUSE FARM, DUNKELD, PERTHSHIRE, PH8 0HX TEL: +44 (0)1350 728763

I have a list of serial numbers and year produced from the Nigel Brown book on Birmingham gunmakers. Let me know and I can give you a year if it is in the book. According to many of these books they were best known as rifle makers but made fine shotguns many which were produced by AA Brown & Sons and finished by Martin.

This is a wonderful classic German sporting rifle on the 98 Mauser action. Features include full rib, claw mounts and original and clear German scope, classic sporting stock with schnabel tip, flat sided bolstered side panels and round knob checkered pistol grip.

The bore is excellent and I noted the trigger pull light and beautifully crisp.

Weight with scope is 7lbs 12oz.

The forend screw is brass which is not original but all else is very stock which I love. The rifling is strong showing little wear but there is frost between. All that I see with this one, the rest is all positive.

I do know this gun will shoot super and be a joy in the woods. The Model 1903 is probably my personal favorite deer rifle ever.

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge

This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4
