John Dickson & Son of Edinburgh Scotland ~ A super light weight and well balanced shotgun from between the wars ~ 6 lbs. even Boxlocks 12 gauge |
5137 16036 |

Completed in 1930 this sexy little Scottish shotgun will make any upland hunter proud. It is tight on face and ready for the field. I might suggest opening up the left choke to .015 or so to put more birds in the bag. Of course, perhaps your one of those bird hunters that likes having full choke in the left barrel and that is fine. I can agree to disagree with you. :) | |||

EM Reilly & Co. 12g ~ completed in 1883 and later nitro proofed ~ An Excellent little cased English double Boxlocks 12 gauge |
5022 23837 |
|
This gun despite its years is tight on face and has bright bores. I can see some very light and minimal pitting in places that is hardly noticeable. This gun is light and has great dimensions for a gun with 30" barrels and a nice long stock. The extension appears to be Ebony. In its makers vintage case this a great package. *I almost forgot to mention that being completed in 1883 it qualifies as antique and can be shipped direct. |

Beesley & Son, London and inscribed on rib "Made for J.P. Graham, Cockermouth" Boxlocks 12 gauge |
4592 62845 |
|
Beesley and Son, London. I assumed when I purchased this gun that it was a Frederick Beesley gun. The man that invented the Purdey self-opener action still in use today by Purdey. Now I am not so sure. I have spent the last half an hour researching but not finding anything specific about Beesley & Son. There is much about Frederick but not about his later years and when his son may have joined the firm. Anyone want to educate the me on this maker? This certainly is a quality shotgun with some nice features such as the higher-grade Anson and Deeley double seared action and with bushed firing pins. The barrels were proofed in London and remain in proof. The gun is tight and well balanced. The name on the rib also had me a bit intrigued so I had to do an internet search. I did not really expect to find much but as it turns out, J.P. Graham was not only an individual but the name of a well-established Gun and fishing tackle supply store. I found a picture of an invoice from this interesting little business online and have attached it here. The town name also was a place I had never heard of so I had to look that up. I have to say I don't think I would want to tell people I was from "Cockermouth." What a name. Sounds like something my mother might call me after I said something naughty and would result in a mouth full of soap. The name does have much logic to it as the town is located at the mouth of the Cocker river where it empties into the river Derwent in Cumbria. |

This early 1890's boxlock has a lot of class! Tight on face and field ready. I love the period engraving. I hope it did not belong to the Sherrif of Nottingham. He was a bad guy. *This gun predates 1899 so we can ship direct. |

Webley made a very large number of these because they became very well known for being well made for an affordable price. This example obviously has seen good use but despite its handling marks and fading blueing is still as tight as the day it was built and has very good trigger pulls. A great backup gun or introduction to vintage boxlocks. I particularly like the ergonomic feel of the Prince of Wales grip on this gun. |

"The Transvaal Gun" Interesting English double that will be very affective in the field Boxlocks 12 gauge |
5117 124905 |
|
On the rib on this English boxlock it says, "The Transvaal Gun" and also on the rib "Specially made for C. Lefever, Bloemhof. Transvaal being a former province in South Africa. It would be interesting to research further to learn more about Mr. Lefever. With 30" nitro steel barrels and modern rising bird stock dimensions I believe many will find this vintage shotgun very effective in the field. Interesting that Bloemhof is a diamond mining area in South Africa. Wikipedia records: "It was founded in August 1864 when diamonds were discovered in the area.[4] The town was established on the farm owned by John Barclay, who survived the HMS Birkenhead shipwreck in 1852. The place became known as Bloemhof (flower court) because of the lovely gardens that were planted by Barclay's daughter. In June 1869, the South African Republic's Volksraad created a new district called Bloemhof named after the town itself.[" |

Great barrels and wall thickness on this James Lang. I note that she has bushed firing pins, a higher grade feature. *This has great choking for upland game, wood cock, and grouse. Mortimer and Son ~ George Street, Edinburgh, classic vintage Scottish boxlock from 1895 ~ No FFL needed, can ship direct Boxlocks 12 gauge |
3173 7452 |
|
This Scottish gun from Edinburgh while appearing worn on the outside is actually a fairly stout and strong gun. The barrels are tight on face (they ring beautifully) and the bores quite nice being bright and free of any heavy pitting. What there is extremely fine and could easily be polished out if desired. The gun was nitro proofed in 1968 according to the proof marks on the flats. Obviously ready for the field as is but this would be a fun one to give a new oil finish to the wood and with a light pick up of the checkering. I would have the barrels browned by Buck Hamlin to bring back their former beauty. *For those that will ask: That is a scratch on the surface of the stock on the right side of the butt stock near the butt, not a crack. It would be gone if properly oil finished. |

Having no cast either way allows this gun to be shot from either way, left shoulder, or right. The gun is tight on face. The stock extension can obviously be removed and replaced with a recoil pad to get most LOP's. The safety feels a little gummy so I suspect could use a good cleaning. Priced as is as we have no time to do this but we can recommend a gunsmith we have locally, or you could do it yourself. This gun was sleeved by Westley Richards. Check out the engraving! |

Westley Richards we found in the back of our vault ~ Jim said did the cat drag it in from the sewer? Boxlocks 12 gauge |
4707 T9140 |
|
We found this in the back of the vault and thought we should find a home for it. Actually tight on face and in proof. The bores are bright and shiny. The minimal wall thickness is thicker than most in fact very thick for this vintage shotgun. That's the good points! Sadly the barrels in the second half towards the muzzle have considerable pitting probably caused by being put away wet in a case. The stock has numerous handling marks. The wood could be easily refinished but striking the barrels you may only get about 80% of the pitting. Or you might get it all. It is very functional as is so I would use it as a rainy day gun and do nothing to it! |

John Robertson (Boss & Co.) 16g boxlock in its makers case ~ Boxlocks 16 gauge |
5052 8523 |
|
It is often thought Boss never produced any boxlocks, but in fact they did. On page 188 of "Boss & Co., Builders of the Best Guns Only" the author, Donald Dallas said: "Before World War I the British market was dominant, but this changed to the American market after the war. Some boxlocks were produced for the first time in the history of the firm. These boxlocks, of superb quality, were usually sold bearing the name "Robertson."" Our example, dating from circa 1938, is a fine and extremely rare in 16g. rare example of the Boss "Robertson" boxlock's. Tight as a tick and field ready. It is found in its original Boss case. |

Manufrance Ideal Grade 2R ~ This is the Classic French Round Action Boxlocks 16 gauge |
3557 18276 |
|
Built on a unique but 100% trigger plate action this is a gun that I have always been intrigued with. I like everything about them except for the safe which is located to the right and left of the trigger guard. It functions fine but I don't find them as ergonomic as the top safe. So, despite the safety, I still shoot, promote and get excited about these guns as they are worth having, shooting and appreciating due to their great balanced round action and features. This grade and higher feature a rising bite third fastener similar to the coveted Rigby rising third bite. The pull back lever behind the trigger guard opens the gun and is extremely ergonomic. It is out of the way and very easy to operate. |

Army & Navy 16g. boxlock ~ very light with long nitro proofed Damascus barrels with modern dimensions Boxlocks 16 gauge |

If you know me at all you know my favorite gauge for the field is 16g. I just returned from shooting wild pheasant and quail in eastern Oregon and I cannot tell you how pleased I was on how my little 16g. performed with 7/8 oz. of shot. If I did my part they dropped dead. No flapping, no running. This little gun, perhaps with a little tuning of the chokes, would make an ideal upland bird gun. This gun was built between 1896 and 1900 so am researching it and if it was made before 1899 we will be able to ship direct to most states instead of to an ffl. These Damascus barrels have been blued but would look stunning if browned for pattern. I would recommend Buck Hamlin. He does awesome work and is timely. |

Gustav Kerstan 16 ga. with unique lock up ~ For the shotgunner that likes to show up with something completely different! (But effective!) Boxlocks 16 gauge |
2983 13637 |

This is one of the most unique side by side shotguns we have ever had in the shop. Many have heard of the "Kerstan" rib extension extra bite. This patent is still in use today by Merkel on their best over and unders. This Kerstan marked example is a double Kerstan bite on a horizontal profile. An extremely strong and unusual prewar 16g. side by side that weighs under 6 lbs. but carries 29" Krupp barrels. The condition is quite good although there is some light pitting in each bore. I have shot this gun and I have to say it handles extremely well. This is from my personal collection, and I often referred to this gun as my "Hammer head shark" gun! |

Jackson Gunmaker of Nottingham ~28g. English guns are so rare we are pleased to offer this little gem ~ Gift for Grandson or granddaughter? Boxlocks 28 gauge |
4933 41723 |
|
Completed approximately in 1902 this petite double is tight and has great nitro proofed steel barrels. The LOP with a 1" pad would be 13 3/4". We could have our pad man put a 1/4" spacer to make it an even 14". ***A 28g. double gives a much better pattern than a .410 so makes a much better first double for a young shooter. |

C. S. Rosson & Co 410 Boxlock with lots of case color and great dimensions Boxlocks 410 gauge |

What a great little double gun. C.S. Rosson was a great maker in Norwich England on Rampant Horse street. Wonder how that street got its name? This gun was built between the great wars in 1933. The LOP could be lengthened with a recoil pad to make the LOP almost 14 5/8". The right side of the action the wood has been properly reinforced with dowels to strengthen the stock. |

Manufrance "Ideal" Combination 12g. shotgun/12g. rifle Model # 320 S ~ The French "Round Action" Boxlocks Caliber |
5027 70804 |
|
I have hunted with and I guess will admit to collecting these Manufrance French trigger plate double guns for years. They still fascinate me. This great example features chopperlump barrels and the retractable in-stock sling which works perfect. The Rifled barrel is excellent and sharp. The shotgun barrel appears mirror when examined from the breech but when inspected from the muzzle I can see some light pitting in places. Only cosmetic but I want you all to know it is there. This gun is in very nice condition with much original case color remaining. I am told you can shoot shot out of the rifled barrel also so can still be used as a double barrel shotgun. |
