This great eight is in great condition! Still some case color left in places the gun is tight and on face. Field ready for what? I think they are legal for Turkey hunting!

Just plain fun to have in the gun room this behemoth is not a delicate flower but a very likable brut! We have enjoyed having this in the shop to show off but know it is your lucky turn to share with your friends.

This is a stout Prussian Daly built by G. Lindner. His guns are considered some of the best sporting guns produced by Germany during his time. I would estimate this gun to be built in the early 1890's.

This gun locks up vault tight with excellent Damascus barrels which are nice and bright with only an extremely light frost on the inside. *Note the beautiful Damascus pattern!

What a cool gun. Nitro proofed in London at .722 which it still now measures perfectly in both barrels so untouched since proof. Thin wall where there is little pressure in some pitting in the right barrel 26" from breech so no worries. I can text a video showing how this patent works. We have never seen an example of this system, nor any of our British expert friends, but we have to say it is perhaps the smoothest self cocking hammer gun system we have ever operated. Gun comes with its really cool vintage maker's case with vintage H&H snap caps and oil bottle. Over 1K value alone.

This gun dates from 1915.

Great min. wall thickness and nitro 2 3/4" proofs with great dimensions are real positives for this shotgun. The engraving does shows considerable wear but otherwise this is a great gun. There is some very light places of fine pitting in the bores but nothing of consequence. The Damascus to sleeving was done in Birmingham England in 1971 as recorded on the proof marks.

We have given it a super low price so we can get more people on board with shooting English hammer guns in the field.

In surprisingly good condition this smooth bore double rifle is quite solid and would be a blast to work up a load and shoot a deer or elk with. The bores are bright with only some light pitting which could be easily bored out (or not) if one wanted as the minimum walls are very thick. 14g. brass shells are available from Rocky Mountain cartridge company.

*Lancaster was a top-notch London gun maker making guns of the highest quality, especially during this period.

*There is if you look a large ding in the wood on the right lower side of the cheek piece. We can repair this to almost invisible for a small fee.

A classic Holland Royal with excellent walls, great stock dimensions, and is perfectly balanced at 6 lbs. 9 oz.. I appreciate the 30" barrels and if we opened up the right barrel to IC this would make an ideal upland gun. This gun was built between 1898 and 1900. We will have the exact date soon from the Holland records. If it dates to before 1899 it could be shipped direct without the need of an FFL.

Fantastic history and with very shootable dimensions this is a Purdey that needs to be kept in the field. Completed in September 1911 for Prince Henry of Prussia. See scans of the Purdey letter and a copy of their ledger. Fascinating!

*Probably as a result of being in the USA for sometime , the chambers of this Purdey have been lengthened to 2 3/4" to accept American shells. There is some light pitting in places on both barrels, hard to see as they have been blued over.

Overall a beautiful example of what Purdey could do during the golden age of driven bird shooting.

The gun is tight in excellent condition and needs nothing.

*Note the choking which will put many birds in your game bag. This is almost the exact choking I use in my favorite game gun and gets excellent results and to be honest, I am a mediocre shot at best.

*This gun was proofed for 2 1/2" but because for many years 2 1/2" shells were not available in America its chamber was lengthened to 2 3/4" so it could be continued to be used here in the USA. These barrels are in excellent condition.

A beautiful high-grade London sidelock with tight and excellent steel barrels and stunning wood. Need I say more? This gun has near perfect choking for most wild bird upland hunting.

Normally this gun would be in the 6-8K range but due to some very minor surface pitting in places on the action (see the pictures, super minor) we can offer this beauty for only 4600.00. A super London high grade sidelock at almost a boxlock price. For the hunter that wants a high-quality gun that he or she is not afraid to take in the field this is a super opportunity.

After seeing my write up on this gun received this email from our famous hunting/naturalist gun writer friend concerning this gun:

Wow Kirby, What a beautiful gun. I love Lang guns. You forgot to mention in the write up that it is stocked to the fences, and has absolutely perfect chokes for a game gun. Cheers, George

Built in 1896 this beautiful sidelock is tight on face and is field ready.

Check out the London BEST rose and scroll engraving! Extra features include auto ejectors, a rolled trigger guard, and bushed firing pins, and single non selective trigger of the Boss patent which is noted on the trigger plate.

Generally excellent bores with some pitting at the end of the chamber where the forcing cone begins. Was obviously there when the gun was re nitro proofed in 1957. Can ship direct, pre 1899. No FFL needed.

What a beautiful little shotgun with rather naive game scene engraving reminiscent of the period this gun was built which would be about 1937.

The condition of this gun is very nice. It features a Purdey style hidden third bite and also the slender Churchill rib which I particularly like.

This is a very nice English between the wars (~1927) sidelock for a super price. Don't be put off the by the extension or the long length of pull as we can remove the extension and have a checkered butt done or a pad added instead of the extension for a very nominal charge to achieve a LOP that will work for you.

This gun being near 100 years old and still retain over 50% original case color is remarkable. It handles well and is tight on face with excellent bores.

*Note the excellent choking for upland birds which I will guarantee will put more birds in your bag!

This gun features wonderful engraving and a Purdey style hidden third bite. Note the Long LOP extendable with a pad to near 16".

The triggers are a bit soft for my liking but useable. We could recommend a gunsmith to crispen them up if they are not to your liking.

Wm. Atkinson & Sons~ Lancaster, Kendel, and Morecambe ~ A lovely 30" barreled English sidelock for a great price
Hammerless Sidelocks

This gun features nitro proofed 30" barrels with mirror bores. Other features include auto ejectors, tight on face barrels to action, and excellent modern stock dimensions cut from a very nice piece of English walnut. The left choke is tighter than many (like me) might want it but remember we can have chokes opened very reasonably. Also, if you need a longer LOP we can provide excellent English style leather covered pads up to 1".

This is a very nice example of an English sidelock. It is well balanced and feels great between the hands as any well made gun should.

I did not know much of this maker so I did some sleuthing on internet and actually found quite a lot:

Built between 1901 and 1905 by address's on rib William Atkinson was the son of Joseph Atkinson of Lancaster. He was born in 1851. By 1871 William had joined his father in the business in Lancaster, but in about 1874 he opened his own business at 52 Stricklandgate, Kendal, Westmoreland; in about 1878 this moved to 8 All Hallows Lane. There may have been a branch of the firm in Preston. In 1874 William and his wife (Eleanor b. 1850) had a son, Joseph Harvey Atkinson, and in 1876 another, Arthur Falder Atkinson (both born in Kendal), they both worked in the business as gunmaker's assistants, there were also had two daughters born in Kendal, Edith (b.1873) and Maud (b.1878) who appear to have worked in the business. In 1881 Joseph Atkinson retired and William took over the business in Lancaster re-naming it William Atkinson. In about 1885 the firm moved to 20 Market Street, between 1890 and 1901 they took over the adjoining premises at 18 Market Street. Between 1890 and 1894 the business in Kendal moved to 58 Highgate. Joseph Atkinson died in the late 1890s, and in 1900 the firm Lancaster business was re-named William Atkinson & Sons. By this time the firm had a substantial trade in bicycles. In about 1901 a branch was opened at 11 Skipton Street, Morecambe, Lancashire. This was probably run by one of the sons, it appears to have closed in about 1905. Between 1901 and 1905 the Kendal business became known as Atkinson & Griffin, it appears to have ceased trading in 1925. Between about 1905 and 1909 the firm in Lancaster occupied premises in North Road. In about 1935 the firm moved to 26 Market Street, Lancaster, but the Lancaster business appears to have closed in 1940. In 1955 Thomas Atkinson & Sons was recorded at 19a Stricklandgate, Kendal. Thomas Atkinson was certainly related, perhaps only distantly. The firm appears to have closed in about 1985.

Existing Army & Navy records show this sidelock was built in 1908 by W.C. Scott. Great dimensions and I really like how this gun opens and closes. It feels like a gun that would be appreciated in the field.

*You know this old girl has seen plenty of service and she does show some scars in handling marks in the wood and blue thinning in places. She would be a great candidate for a light restoration or used and appreciated as is. This gun I noted when first operated did not have auto ejectors. I really like this as having auto ejectors is really one more thing to go wrong and truly in the upland field unnecessary. I will get some flack over this, I am sure! I will agree to disagree.

This gun is in proof and thin minimum walls are out near the muzzle where they should be and where there is very little pressure. We have priced this gun attractively for this reason and if you are interested in this gun, I suggest you call and buy it so you can examine it in person and take advantage of our five day inspection and free return shipping if it does not meet your needs for any reason.

*Exceptional high-grade engraving and bushed firing pins are also among its many great features.

*This gun was finished during the end of the Edwardian era, @1908. This was the peak period of the driven bird shooting and also best gunmaking in England.

This Diamond grade we would want 6-8 grand for if the butt stock had not been modified. The barrels and action and engraving are spectacular! Restock it or do some refinish magic (stock painting is a great way to go, see https://www.marklarsongunart.com/ ) or just use as is. These guns sold for over $200 in around 1890 making them one of the more expesive shotguns to be purchased in the world at that time and the quality shows. Built in Prussia but shows no German proof marks but only London crown over V which is interesting.

Very American dimensions on this Scottish boxlock. With zero cast it could be shot by a right handed or left handed person. It is tight on face and field ready.

Shooting Sportsman (January-February) has a great article about these Scottish boxlocks by Douglas Tate. See page 54. To sum the article up the Scottish makers spent extra time and effort to make their boxlocks superior and unique from the average Birmingham gun.

This gun despite its years is tight on face and has bright bores. I can see some very light and minimal pitting in places that is hardly noticeable. This gun is light and has great dimensions for a gun with 30" barrels and a nice long stock. The extension appears to be Ebony. In its makers vintage case this a great package.

Completed in 1886 this classic Westley is in remarkably wonderful mechanical condition. The wood has as you can see, many handling marks so could use some restoration or enjoyed as is with its life's patina. The barrels are tight on face, and they ring like church bells.

Webley made a very large number of these because they became very well known for being well made for an affordable price. This example obviously has seen good use but despite its handling marks and fading blueing is still as tight as the day it was built and has very good trigger pulls. A great backup gun or introduction to vintage boxlocks.

I particularly like the ergonomic feel of the Prince of Wales grip on this gun.

"The Transvaal Gun" Interesting English double that will be very affective in the field

On the rib on this English boxlock it says, "The Transvaal Gun" and also on the rib "Specially made for C. Lefever, Bloemhof. Transvaal being a former province in South Africa. It would be interesting to research further to learn more about Mr. Lefever.

With 30" nitro steel barrels and modern rising bird stock dimensions I believe many will find this vintage shotgun very effective in the field.

Interesting that Bloemhof is a diamond mining area in South Africa. Wikipedia records: "It was founded in August 1864 when diamonds were discovered in the area.[4] The town was established on the farm owned by John Barclay, who survived the HMS Birkenhead shipwreck in 1852. The place became known as Bloemhof (flower court) because of the lovely gardens that were planted by Barclay's daughter. In June 1869, the South African Republic's Volksraad created a new district called Bloemhof named after the town itself.["

Beesley & Son, London and inscribed on rib "Made for J.P. Graham, Cockermouth"

Beesley and Son, London. I assumed when I purchased this gun that it was a Frederick Beesley gun. The man that invented the Purdey self-opener action still in use today by Purdey. Now I am not so sure. I have spent the last half an hour researching but not finding anything specific about Beesley & Son. There is much about Frederick but not about his later years and when his son may have joined the firm. Anyone want to educate the me on this maker?

This certainly is a quality shotgun with some nice features such as the higher-grade Anson and Deeley double seared action and with bushed firing pins. The barrels were proofed in London and remain in proof. The gun is tight and well balanced.

The name on the rib also had me a bit intrigued so I had to do an internet search. I did not really expect to find much but as it turns out, J.P. Graham was not only an individual but the name of a well-established Gun and fishing tackle supply store. I found a picture of an invoice from this interesting little business online and have attached it here. The town name also was a place I had never heard of so I had to look that up. I have to say I don't think I would want to tell people I was from "Cockermouth." What a name. Sounds like something my mother might call me after I said something naughty and would result in a mouth full of soap. The name does have much logic to it as the town is located at the mouth of the Cocker river where it empties into the river Derwent in Cumbria.

Having no cast either way allows this gun to be shot from either way, left shoulder, or right. The gun is tight on face. The stock extension can obviously be removed and replaced with a recoil pad to get most LOP's. The safety feels a little gummy so I suspect could use a good cleaning. Priced as is as we have no time to do this but we can recommend a gunsmith we have locally, or you could do it yourself. This gun was sleeved by Westley Richards.

No case colors left but a solid gun and well in proof. There is a slight solder gap between the rib and left barrel near the breech, but it is really inconsequential as the barrels ring like church bells. I am sure it has been there since new. The gun is vault tight with excellent bores.

We found this in the back of the vault and thought we should find a home for it. Actually tight on face and in proof. The bores are bright and shiny. The minimal wall thickness is thicker than most in fact very thick for this vintage shotgun.

That's the good points! Sadly the barrels in the second half towards the muzzle have considerable pitting probably caused by being put away wet in a case. The stock has numerous handling marks. The wood could be easily refinished but striking the barrels you may only get about 80% of the pitting. Or you might get it all. It is very functional as is so I would use it as a rainy day gun and do nothing to it!

Good dimensions, tight, with great min. wall thickness. The gun shows lots of history but could make someone a great back up gun. Some very light pitting in places in both barrels but nothing of consequence.

Nice 30" nitro proofed barrels and if was a pad was added could be 14 1/2" which would be great for many. On the edge of needing rejoining but it could shot like it is for years with the correct ammunition. Quite a bargain at this price.

It is often thought Boss never produced any boxlocks, but in fact they did. On page 188 of "Boss & Co., Builders of the Best Guns Only" the author, Donald Dallas said:

"Before World War I the British market was dominant, but this changed to the American market after the war. Some boxlocks were produced for the first time in the history of the firm. These boxlocks, of superb quality, were usually sold bearing the name "Robertson.""

Our example, dating from circa 1938, is a fine and extremely rare in 16g. rare example of the Boss "Robertson" boxlock's. Tight as a tick and field ready. It is found in its original Boss case.

Built on a unique but 100% trigger plate action this is a gun that I have always been intrigued with. I like everything about them except for the safe which is located to the right and left of the trigger guard. It functions fine but I don't find them as ergonomic as the top safe.

So, despite the safety, I still shoot, promote and get excited about these guns as they are worth having, shooting and appreciating due to their great balanced round action and features. This grade and higher feature a rising bite third fastener similar to the coveted Rigby rising third bite. The pull back lever behind the trigger guard opens the gun and is extremely ergonomic. It is out of the way and very easy to operate.

If you know me at all you know my favorite gauge for the field is 16g. I just returned from shooting wild pheasant and quail in eastern Oregon and I cannot tell you how pleased I was on how my little 16g. performed with 7/8 oz. of shot. If I did my part they dropped dead. No flapping, no running. This little gun, perhaps with a little tuning of the chokes, would make an ideal upland bird gun.

This gun was built between 1896 and 1900 so am researching it and if it was made before 1899 we will be able to ship direct to most states instead of to an ffl.

These Damascus barrels have been blued but would look stunning if browned for pattern. I would recommend Buck Hamlin. He does awesome work and is timely.

This is one of the most unique side by side shotguns we have ever had in the shop. Many have heard of the "Kerstan" rib extension extra bite. This patent is still in use today by Merkel on their best over and unders. This Kerstan marked example is a double Kerstan bite on a horizontal profile. An extremely strong and unusual prewar 16g. side by side that weighs under 6 lbs. but carries 29" Krupp barrels.

The condition is quite good although there is some light pitting in each bore. I have shot this gun and I have to say it handles extremely well. This is from my personal collection, and I often referred to this gun as my "Hammer head shark" gun!

What a very cool little British 16g. which weighs in quite light for a 28" gun at 5 lbs. 10 oz. We have this gun offered very inexpensive as the butt stock has been altered to what are better dimensions for most with walnut slices. Professionally done but visible on close inspection. Restock it or use it the rest of your life "as is" in the field. I personally love and promote 16g. British guns for upland bird hunting as they are very light and well balanced so that one is comfortable to carry all day while throwing an excellent pattern.

This is one of the high grade boxlocks built in 1891 that William Evans was known for. Restocked with modern dimensions but still retaining the full choke in the long 28" barrels this gun is one to be used in the field. The last owner told me this little 28g shot like a house a fire and was murder on high doves. The chokes can easily be opened to become whatever one would like, the advantage of finding a full choked gun.

The pictures show on the action a yellow color which is excess oil from the stock finish. We have since removed that and it now looks great with matching gray patina!

What a great little double gun. C.S. Rosson was a great maker in Norwich England on Rampant Horse street. Wonder how that street got its name?

This gun was built between the great wars in 1933. The LOP could be lengthened with a recoil pad to make the LOP almost 14 5/8". The right side of the action the wood has been properly reinforced with dowels to strengthen the stock.

I have hunted with and I guess will admit to collecting these Manufrance French trigger plate double guns for years. They still fascinate me. This great example features chopperlump barrels and the retractable in-stock sling which works perfect. The Rifled barrel is excellent and sharp. The shotgun barrel appears mirror when examined from the breech but when inspected from the muzzle I can see some light pitting in places. Only cosmetic but I want you all to know it is there.

This gun is in very nice condition with much original case color remaining. I am told you can shoot shot out of the rifled barrel also so can still be used as a double barrel shotgun.

Featuring near 90% original case color and near perfect bores this is a stunning little hammer double rifle. No markings on the gun indicating caliber but the measurement's of a the chamber cast show it remarkably close to our 38-55 Winchester so there is very good chance this brass could be used. See scan of chamber cast and measurements. Keep in mind that chambers are usually slightly over size to actual brass dimensions to prevent sticking.

The forend screw is brass which is not original but all else is very stock which I love. The rifling is strong showing little wear but there is frost between. All that I see with this one, the rest is all positive. The rifle is the "Take Apart" model meaning the action and barrel can be removed from the stock without tools, basically a form of a quick take down rifle.

I do know this gun will shoot super and be a joy in the woods. The Model 1903 is probably my personal favorite deer rifle ever.

Hosford and Co. Wall thickness gauge
Men's Collectibles
10 gauge
1158
This wall thickness gauge, complete with table clamping barrel vise, is the most accurate wall thickness gauge that we are aware of for the money (the next more accurate gauge is digital and costs over 2K). This gauge will measure 4 gauge through .410. It may look intimidating to use but let me assure you it is not. The secret and success of this gauge is in that the barrels are easily held suspended by the table clamped barrel vise. The gauge, once zeroed is slid over the barrel and quite easily moved back and forth while one just watches the gauge to read the actual barrel wall thickness. There is no math to do. The ingenious barrel holder allows you to easily rotate the barrels allowing you access to areas of the barrel near the ribs. On the vertical gauge this is quite difficult but on this gauge very easy. This gauge also has the feature of a finer pointed tip on the gauge allowing you to measure inside many pits. I cannot stress the value of having a quality wall thickness gauge if one is a serious collector and purchaser of high end double guns. THE FIRST GUN YOU REFUSE AS A RESULT OF USING THIS GAUGE PAYS FOR THE GAUGE MANY TIMES OVER. If you do not understand the significance of the last sentence, please reread it. We will not make any significant money selling these gauges. It is our intent to have educated buyers. It is our belief that our client’s best interests are also ours. Most all of our best clients already have this gauge but I would like to see all of our clients with one. These gauges were designed and hand built by Jon Hosford, a natural engineer, double gun lover, collector, and wing shooter (not to mention his appetite for fine red wine, scotch, and good food!)

See Jon's gauge in use and learn how to use it on youtube by typing in a search on youtube: “Hosford & Co., Shotgun barrel gauge, Part 1” or clicking this url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jQZn4kohH4

This is a large vault out of an old bank near us. We have been storing it inside for years thinking we would build it into a new building for our business. We have decided this will not happen so need to move this along to someone that will use it. This would make an awesome walk in gun/valuables safe or use the door and frame for a walk in vault room. This is a bargain and am selling it for basically what we have in it as we need the space. It is open and unlocked. The combination can be changed by a professional locksmith we were told when we purchased it over ten years ago. It is very heavy being 4K to 6k pounds so a heavy duty truck with a fork lift would be needed to pickup. condition: good make / manufacturer: Dibold locks size / dimensions: 49.75" W x 40" D x 86" H

We seem to have a problem keeping him off the kitchen counters if there are any tasty morsels left there.... ....No one is perfect!

No cast on this fine shotgun so could be shot by a left- or right-handed person. The long 30" tubes are impressive with excellent min. wall thickness. Great stock dimensions for most. Excellent engraving and has bushed firing pins. The large pad/extension could be removed and replaced with a standard 1" pad and have LOP of 14 1/2".

I think the pictures will tell you all you need to know as they show the excellent condition this English boxlock is in. Great dimensions for many and zero cast so south paws can shoot this one too!

This double has seen very little use.

George Gibbs 12g Top Lever with Low Rebounding Hammers, Steel nitro proofed barrels

George Gibbs is a very well respected name in the English gun world. This example is tight and ready for the field. The gun was proofed at 13/1 in both barrels (this is .719 to .729 ) and both barrels measure .722 so this gun is well in proof.

This gun dates from 1915.

Job Trevitt ~ A small maker English hammer double with good dimensions and 2 3/4" nitro proof

Great min. wall thickness and nitro 2 3/4" proofs with great dimensions are real positives for this shotgun.

This Coggy 20 is very clean and is tight and handles well. Note all the remaining case color and blue.

The stock has 1/4" cast at the comb as at the heel to accommodate a shorter neck and wider face like mine. It comes up great on me! To bad I am hooked on 16g. guns or it would be one for me to keep.
