If you know Boss guns then you know that they are the senior member of a very short list of the worlds greatest gun makers.

Some of you know me and that I am attracted to quality Damascus guns. This gun pulled me across the room when I saw it in a rack in England. From that distance I could see it was a shotgun of the highest form without knowing the makers name. Much to my delight I found on close inspection a Stephen Grant, one of my favorite makers. The condition of this fine shotgun is very nice and appears in original condition seeing little if no restoration. There is a small stock extension which we could remove and replace with a fine leather covered pad if one would like for a LOP up to 15 1/2"

Completed in 1903 this is a true Edwardian era gun ( Queen Victoria died in 1901 thank you Austin). The gun is found in an original Grant case which also is in very nice original condition.

Does anyone recognize the family crest in the stock?

This is a super elegant round action from Scotland with gorgeous nitro proofed Damascus barrels. Stunning Damascus pattern. Did I mention how beautiful these barrels are?

These trigger plate actions remove a large amount of wood from between the action so to strengthen it this gun has had a pin put cross wise across the head of the stock to prevent cracking. It was professionally and elegantly done with horn covers. The butt has a 1" horn extension.

William Powell and Son Sidelock in very nice condition in its makers case ~ This is a super deal on an extremely nice English sidelock
Hammerless Sidelocks

James Woodward built a lot of Best guns with 29" barrels and this gun proves that other great makers like William Powell built guns with this barrel length also. I really do like this length as to me it is the best of both worlds. They swing well but are light enough to carry all day.

This Sidelock was once one of pair but the number one gun it seems is lost to time. The near full coverage scroll engraving is very crisp and retains some case color, near 40%. The gun locks up vault tight and the barrels are in very good order. They are bright, ring well. They do show some very light frosting but absolutely no deep pitting of any kind. We can arrange to have this frosting removed to become mirror if your one of those who demands perfection.

The case does appear to be an original Powell case. I note when we took the picture it was when the gun was just unpacked from England. This case will clean up nice and we will do that before the gun ships out.

Surviving company records show our gun was sold to Major S.J. Symons on 14 September 1907. It came back to Powell and was sold 2nd hand on 13 December 1945 to Major H.D. Semist

This gun is a true Edwardian gun dating from the dusk of 1905. With Best quality throughout it is hard to find fault with the dimensions, quality of engraving and barrels. The gun is tight on face and field ready. The wood is very beautiful but could if wanted benefit from a new oil finish and restoration of the checkering.

Some, as in myself in certain circumstances, prefer to use and enjoy the gun with the earned patina of time and use. If one would like to have us restore the wood and checkering I am very pleased to say we can now offer that service with the addition of very talented Jason Bartel to our restoration department. This wood restoration we can now do for an additional price of $1000.00. I guarantee the results will be authentic and outstanding and you will be beyond satisfied or you don't have to pay us a dime for the service.

Beesley is a very old and respected name in the London gun trade. Frederick started his apprenticeship at William Moore & Grey where I am sure he worked with many of the gun makers from Joseph Manton. Men that helped begin the making of high end and quality double guns. Frederick Beesley is most famous for being the inventor of the self opening mechanism that Purdey adopted in around 1880 and and is still in use by them today.

C&H produced a large number of fair quality but inexpensive boxlocks which I believe resulted in a reputation of lesser priced guns. What is not well known is that they built very nice higher grade and quality guns like the one we are offering here. This gun features nitro proofed 30" barrels with mirror bores. Other features include auto ejectors, tight on face barrels to action, and excellent modern stock dimensions cut from a very nice piece of English walnut. The left choke is tighter than many (like me) might want it but remember we can have chokes opened very reasonably. Also, if you need a longer LOP we can provide excellent English style leather covered pads up to 1".

This is a very nice example of an English sidelock. It is well balanced and feels great between the hands as any well made gun should.

I did not know much of this maker so I did some sleuthing on internet and actually found quite a lot:

Built between 1901 and 1905 by address's on rib William Atkinson was the son of Joseph Atkinson of Lancaster. He was born in 1851. By 1871 William had joined his father in the business in Lancaster, but in about 1874 he opened his own business at 52 Stricklandgate, Kendal, Westmoreland; in about 1878 this moved to 8 All Hallows Lane. There may have been a branch of the firm in Preston. In 1874 William and his wife (Eleanor b. 1850) had a son, Joseph Harvey Atkinson, and in 1876 another, Arthur Falder Atkinson (both born in Kendal), they both worked in the business as gunmaker's assistants, there were also had two daughters born in Kendal, Edith (b.1873) and Maud (b.1878) who appear to have worked in the business. In 1881 Joseph Atkinson retired and William took over the business in Lancaster re-naming it William Atkinson. In about 1885 the firm moved to 20 Market Street, between 1890 and 1901 they took over the adjoining premises at 18 Market Street. Between 1890 and 1894 the business in Kendal moved to 58 Highgate. Joseph Atkinson died in the late 1890s, and in 1900 the firm Lancaster business was re-named William Atkinson & Sons. By this time the firm had a substantial trade in bicycles. In about 1901 a branch was opened at 11 Skipton Street, Morecambe, Lancashire. This was probably run by one of the sons, it appears to have closed in about 1905. Between 1901 and 1905 the Kendal business became known as Atkinson & Griffin, it appears to have ceased trading in 1925. Between about 1905 and 1909 the firm in Lancaster occupied premises in North Road. In about 1935 the firm moved to 26 Market Street, Lancaster, but the Lancaster business appears to have closed in 1940. In 1955 Thomas Atkinson & Sons was recorded at 19a Stricklandgate, Kendal. Thomas Atkinson was certainly related, perhaps only distantly. The firm appears to have closed in about 1985.

J.P. Sauer Sidelock "The Knockabout" ~ This was retailed by Von Lengerke & Detmold of New York

This gun dates from the early 1900's (before WWI) when VL&D imported these to be sold in their famous outfitting store in New York city. VL&D was a direct competitor of Charles Daly.

This was an entry level gun but typical of German guns from this period the design and craftsmanship is extremely high.

What I really appreciate about this gun besides its obvious quality is it all appears to be in original un-messed with condition with at least 80% original case color and blue remaining. Their is some minor browning/micro pitting on the right lock typical of a gun of this age.

Features include rare straight hand stock, Krupp steel barrels, and bushed firing pins. This is a collector quality gun.

I have always liked the engraving on the grade III guns. This gun has not seen any restoration but has sound barrels and wood. There is a slight fuzz of light pitting in the bores on very close inspection but overall still bright and shiny.

Made ~ 1904.

William Evans 16g. Sidelock Ejector with Original Evans Makers Case ~Sale!- Single trigger for those late snow roosters when warm gloves are in order!

I have always appreciated William Evans shotguns. While they had their guns built for them in the London and Birmingham trade they obviously required a very high standard with details and quality that set them apart from many other makers. This dedication to quality is certainly a factor in why they are still in business today.

16g. Sidelocks are very hard for me to find so I was extremely excited to find this little gem in the UK and bring it across the pond. The non –selective single trigger (believe me that is a good thing, selective triggers are the ones that give single triggers a reputation for failure) is crisp and works perfectly. Choking is perfect for upland hunting or woodcock or southern bobwhites. I love 16g. and I really like this gun.

James Purdey & Sons 20g. with exceptional and breathtaking engraving!
Hammerless Sidelocks

The outstanding thing about this little gun is the extraordinary engraved fences and scroll engraving. This is exceedingly beautiful and extremely rare on a Purdey. According to Purdey records the gun was completed August 15th 1891 for a H.R. Magniac. Our research shows he was a Captain in the Boer war between 1899 and 1902. Records show he was wounded.

This shotgun started life as a 450 BPE Double rifle and was converted to a shotgun via sleeving at some unknown time in England. *Note the sleeving letters on both left and right barrels. With a new blacking job we can have this removed. It would be wonderful (while obviously not necessary) for the next owner to have an extra set of double rifle barrels made for this work of gun art. Purdey estimates around 40K pounds for this service. This sounds like a lot but then again you would have a Purdey double rifle in your chosen caliber for around 60K$.

This would make a great Sporting clays or Vintager competition gun. Being proofed for 2 3/4" it would easily digest many of the American retailed shells. Also unusual about this gun is it is a hammerless gun with a Jones underlever but still features the Beasley patent and Purdey flagship a true self opening mechanism.

I was excited to learn something new about the English gun trade from the Purdey records on this gun. The record says "Scroll detonating" which according to Purdey's indicates the deep chisel fences and possibly was not done by the engraver but by the finisher. Fascinating!

Alex Henry has found new life as a 20g shotgun! What a lovely little gun this has become
Hammerless Sidelocks

Once a masculine double rifle from 1894 this piece of Scottish gun making history has evolved into a superb almost feminine 20g. sidelock that will please the members of the shooting sports for another 100 years or I hope, even more. I have seen and had many shotguns that were once double rifles but I have to say this is the first that is without doubt a true success. Often this conversion would result in a heavy, club like shotgun but this little beauty is well balanced and comes up beautifully.

Besides handling extremely well, Miss Henry is graced with seriously beautiful wood and outstanding engraving. This butterfly is currently one of my favorite guns in the shop at present.

L.C. Smith 20g. "Ideal" Grade with beautiful new case colors and barrel blacking ~ Some pitting in bore so sold at a shooter price

20 gauge Smith Ideal grades are hard to find and here we have one with ejectors. Completely restored with new case color, barrel black, and wood finish this example is quite attractive. Unfortunately the right bore has some rather deep pitting that takes this gun right out of the collector market and allows us to sell this gun at a very attractive price for the hunter or clay shooter.

*Note the great stock dimensions and only 6 lbs. weight.
