So beautifully balanced when I shot this gun I could not guess the weight. It feels much lighter than what it is but swings like a dream.

This gun features new steel barrels by the maker proofed 2 3/4 oz.. These barrels were proofed at .729 and that is as they measure today.

Churchill Premier Sidelock~The top of the line Churchill featuring best quality though and through

This is the classic Premier London "Best" with the pinless sidelocks. The gun features chopperlump barrels, beautiful wood, and great stock dimensions for most. She is tight and field ready. Only thing I might consider is opening the right to IC or Cylinder if I was going to use it for upland birds. This is not expensive, less than $100.00.

I might note that finding a 30" barreled Churchill is very rare as most were built with 25"barrels.

I failed to mention anything about the engraving. It is outstanding!!

This is a great little Purdey for a great price. So you will ask, why is this gun so cheap for a Purdey? Two reasons. We got a great deal and are passing it on to you and also there is some very light (very hard to see) pitting towards the muzzles. This Purdey is tight, in proof with great wall thickness, and field ready. Purdey Ledger says: No. 12868 Completed: 9th December 1887 For: Basil Scott-Murray Esq Description: A hammerless game gun Weight: 6lb. 12oz. Calibre: 12-bore Barrels: 30in. William Powell and Son Sidelock in very nice condition in its makers case ~ This is a super deal on an extremely nice English sidelock
Hammerless Sidelocks

James Woodward built a lot of Best guns with 29" barrels and this gun proves that other great makers like William Powell built guns with this barrel length also. I really do like this length as to me it is the best of both worlds. They swing well but are light enough to carry all day.

This Sidelock was once one of pair but the number one gun it seems is lost to time. The near full coverage scroll engraving is very crisp and retains some case color, near 40%. The gun locks up vault tight and the barrels are in very good order. They are bright, ring well. They do show some very light frosting but absolutely no deep pitting of any kind. We can arrange to have this frosting removed to become mirror if your one of those who demands perfection.

The case does appear to be an original Powell case. I note when we took the picture it was when the gun was just unpacked from England. This case will clean up nice and we will do that before the gun ships out.

Surviving company records show our gun was sold to Major S.J. Symons on 14 September 1907. It came back to Powell and was sold 2nd hand on 13 December 1945 to Major H.D. Semist

Check out the engraving on this gun. Built between 1904 and 1906 it is highly unusual to have realistic dog scenes engraved from this period.

Beyond the wonderful engraving this gun features very nice marbled English walnut and an extra Purdey hidden third bite.

The barrels have some light pitting on the outside of the left barrel that could be removed with a restrike and black. Probably the result of being put away in a damp case. The gun is tight on face and field ready.

Wm. Atkinson & Sons~ Lancaster, Kendel, and Morecambe ~ A lovely 30" barreled English sidelock for a great price

This gun features nitro proofed 30" barrels with mirror bores. Other features include auto ejectors, tight on face barrels to action, and excellent modern stock dimensions cut from a very nice piece of English walnut. The left choke is tighter than many (like me) might want it but remember we can have chokes opened very reasonably. Also, if you need a longer LOP we can provide excellent English style leather covered pads up to 1".

This is a very nice example of an English sidelock. It is well balanced and feels great between the hands as any well made gun should.

I did not know much of this maker so I did some sleuthing on internet and actually found quite a lot:

Built between 1901 and 1905 by address's on rib William Atkinson was the son of Joseph Atkinson of Lancaster. He was born in 1851. By 1871 William had joined his father in the business in Lancaster, but in about 1874 he opened his own business at 52 Stricklandgate, Kendal, Westmoreland; in about 1878 this moved to 8 All Hallows Lane. There may have been a branch of the firm in Preston. In 1874 William and his wife (Eleanor b. 1850) had a son, Joseph Harvey Atkinson, and in 1876 another, Arthur Falder Atkinson (both born in Kendal), they both worked in the business as gunmaker's assistants, there were also had two daughters born in Kendal, Edith (b.1873) and Maud (b.1878) who appear to have worked in the business. In 1881 Joseph Atkinson retired and William took over the business in Lancaster re-naming it William Atkinson. In about 1885 the firm moved to 20 Market Street, between 1890 and 1901 they took over the adjoining premises at 18 Market Street. Between 1890 and 1894 the business in Kendal moved to 58 Highgate. Joseph Atkinson died in the late 1890s, and in 1900 the firm Lancaster business was re-named William Atkinson & Sons. By this time the firm had a substantial trade in bicycles. In about 1901 a branch was opened at 11 Skipton Street, Morecambe, Lancashire. This was probably run by one of the sons, it appears to have closed in about 1905. Between 1901 and 1905 the Kendal business became known as Atkinson & Griffin, it appears to have ceased trading in 1925. Between about 1905 and 1909 the firm in Lancaster occupied premises in North Road. In about 1935 the firm moved to 26 Market Street, Lancaster, but the Lancaster business appears to have closed in 1940. In 1955 Thomas Atkinson & Sons was recorded at 19a Stricklandgate, Kendal. Thomas Atkinson was certainly related, perhaps only distantly. The firm appears to have closed in about 1985.

Slightly cast on for the left handed shot this gun could easily be bent back to a right handed gun. The gun is tight and field ready but to be up front this was a rather tired gun that was brought back to life with newer sleeved barrels. There is engraving ware and a few small pits in both bores. The trigger guard is a replacement and has no engraving.

Built before 1899 there is no FFL needed so can ship direct. I do love the early Purdey style fences and the Purdey style hidden third bite.

I have always appreciated William Evans shotguns. While they had their guns built for them in the London and Birmingham trade they obviously required a very high standard with details and quality that set them apart from many other makers. This dedication to quality is certainly a factor in why they are still in business today.

16g. Sidelocks are very hard for me to find so I was extremely excited to find this little gem in the UK and bring it across the pond. The non –selective single trigger (believe me that is a good thing, selective triggers are the ones that give single triggers a reputation for failure) is crisp and works perfectly. Choking is perfect for upland hunting or woodcock or southern bobwhites. I love 16g. and I really like this gun.

Alex Henry has found new life as a 20g shotgun! What a lovely little gun this has become
Hammerless Sidelocks

Once a masculine double rifle from 1894 this piece of Scottish gun making history has evolved into a superb almost feminine 20g. sidelock that will please the members of the shooting sports for another 100 years or I hope, even more. I have seen and had many shotguns that were once double rifles but I have to say this is the first that is without doubt a true success. Often this conversion would result in a heavy, club like shotgun but this little beauty is well balanced and comes up beautifully.

Besides handling extremely well, Miss Henry is graced with seriously beautiful wood and outstanding engraving. This butterfly is currently one of my favorite guns in the shop at present.
