Holland & Holland 12g Royal Paradox in its makers case from 1914 Hammerless Sidelocks 12 gauge |
6276 15948 |
|
|
Holland built the Paradox (shotgun rifle combination) to provide a double use sporting gun and did it very successfully as many were sold over the years. If you are unfamiliar with the Paradox guns, they have rifling in the last few inches of the barrels to put a good spin on the bullet to increase accuracy.
15048 was ordered as one of a pair (the other was 15947) in Dec 9, 1913. It was ordered for a L.F. Davidoff, Esq. in Russia. The dealer was Mr. J. Larderet. The gun was finished Dec 1914, but that was in the middle of WW1, so it wasn’t shipped. It was ultimately sold in 1930. It was chambered and regulated for the new cartridge the 38x2 (38 grains of cordite with 2 grains of black powder) and a new compound 600 grain bullet. It was described as the “New Nitro” for internal H&H use or the Nitro Express” for advertising. The velocity of the 600 grain bullet was 1250 to 1300 fps. 15948 is a desirable gun, being only one of 12 made for the 38x2 cartridge and appears in excellent condition. *The bores do show some very light pitting which could possibly be removed with a 2-3 thou back bore polish. Appears as a haze. Not bad at all but I like to tell everything I see. |

James Purdey & Sons 2-Barrel set - Featured in Nigel Brown's British Gun Maker's Volume 1 ~ No cast so great for left or right-handed shooters! Hammerless Sidelocks 12 gauge |
6347 10074 |
|
|
From Nigel Brown's book printed on the photo page 113: "James Purdey 12 bore top-lever bar-in-wood, hammer gun No. 10074 made 1877. This was one of Nigel Browns personal guns. If you don't have Nigel's book "British Gunmakers Volume I ~ London" it is a must have. *An excellent example of the peak of the hammer gun era, combining great elegance with functional simplicity." We took this gun out yesterday and we all shot it well. See Travis in attached picture with good friend Rick. He has a big smile on his face as he found it difficult to miss targets with this gun! *The Original Damascus barrels were shortened by Purdey's to their current length, and a new set of 30" steel barrels were fitted by them. Both barrel sets fit and shoot great. |

James Woodward & Son BEST London from 1943 ~ One of the last 20 ever made. Hammerless Sidelocks 12 gauge |
6161 7155 |
|
| A fantastic Woodward in excellent condition. This is my favorite London maker. The choking is perfect for upland. Purdey Records on this gun: Woodward, No. 7155 Completed: 18 August 1943 For: C.F. Emison Description: A Lightweight Hammerless Ejector Game Gun Weight: 6lb. 4oz. Calibre: 12-bore Barrels: 27in. Vickers nickel steel Choke: I.C. & 3/8 Stock: 14½in. Notes: Straight hand stock with silver oval and chequered end Disc-set strikers Due to wartime regulations, no new guns were built after the outbreak of war in September 1939. However, guns could be finished, and so this gun was most likely in hand prior to the outbreak of war, and was then completed for Emison in 1943. It appears to be one of less than 20 guns sold during the war. The company closed in December 1948, with the last serial number issued being 7184. | |||

Completed in 1901. No cast means this gun could be shot well by a right- and left-handed shooter. |

Wonderful between the wars (1921) London quality shows clearly in this high condition pair of sidelocks. These open easily. *In their original oak and leather case this pair still have over 40% original case color remaining. The bluing on the barrels well over 95% and the wood finish very nice. Churchill had a way to strike their shorter barreled guns so you feel like you're swinging a well-balanced 30" gun but with more speed or fluidity. I really think it is magic. I do not know how they did it. This gun dates from 1931 when, being between the wars, it is felt some of the best London guns were ever built. A very solid Purdey with great barrels and 2 3/4" nitro proofs. I believe all the case colors and barrel black and stock finish are all original on this light little sidelock even though it dates from 1938. The dimensions are great for many and if was one to open the left choke some it would make an ideal upland bird gun. We can arrange to have this done for only $85.00 and can be done in three weeks or less! *Note the rolled trigger guard and the locks featuring cocking indicators. This gun obviously has not seen a lot of use in its life and is a super value for a true between the wars London sidelock. |

A very nice side lock ejector from between the wars. Powell records show this gun was built for a Capt. H. Wykeham 11 August 1919 . The gun is tight in excellent condition and needs nothing. *Note the choking which will put many birds in your game bag. This is almost the exact choking I use in my favorite game gun and gets excellent results and to be honest, I am a mediocre shot at best. |

A very high grade London gun from the inventor of the Purdey self-opening mechanism. While not a self-opener, this is considered a London BEST. A very high-quality English sidelock for a great price! Tight on face and field ready. Don't be fooled by the weight because between the hands this gun feels much lighter as it is extremely well balanced. *Great choking for upland birds and stock dimensions many Americans can appreciate. The dimensions are very similar to all the guns that we grew up with here in the states. |

Joseph Lang London Sidelock with wonderful wood and dimensions ~ Recently competed in the Great Northern SxS event! Hammerless Sidelocks 12 gauge |

A beautiful high-grade London sidelock with tight and excellent steel barrels and stunning wood. Need I say more? This gun has near perfect choking for most wild bird upland hunting. Normally this gun would be in the 6-8K range but due to some very minor surface pitting in places on the action (see the pictures, super minor) we can offer this beauty for only 4600.00. A super London high grade sidelock at almost a boxlock price. For the hunter that wants a high-quality gun that he or she is not afraid to take in the field this is a super opportunity. The gun is super tight and field ready. After seeing my write up on this gun received this email from our famous hunting/naturalist gun writer friend concerning this gun: "Wow Kirby, What a beautiful gun. I love Lang guns. You forgot to mention in the write up that it is stocked to the fences and has absolutely perfect chokes for a game gun. Cheers, George" *At the recent Great Northern SxS event in WI, Travis, our gun photographer used this gun in the main event. He fired 375 rounds through the gun with out even the slightest hiccup. He said the gun felt deceptively light for its weight due to its exceptional balance and shot extremely well. |

Travis and I both really appreciate William Powell guns. He's a Birmingham gunmaker of some of the finest best English shotguns. It is always a debate but in reality, a BEST English shotgun does not need to come from London. This sidelock from the turn of the 20th century is an example of the immaculate gun work and engraving. *The wood is remarkable with a deep red hue to it and a stunning grain pattern. *The right barrel, it must be noted, is on the edge of being out of proof at .739 but still retains safe wall thickness. |

This fine Atkin dates from @ 1902 only the beginning of the Edwardian era where driven shooting became the rage of the elite. It was during this period the London gunmakers competed to produce some of the finest shotguns ever built. Their craftsmanship obviously shows in our example. Henry Atkin Sr. worked for Purdey's from 1814 for over 50 years and the younger apprenticed with them for 10 to then open his own shop in 1877. His guns often said on the rib "formerly of James Purdey."
*This gun features chopperlump barrels that lock up tight to the breech. This will make someone a great upland gun. |

Manufactured 1906 this beautiful sidelock is in very nice honest condition. Tight with American dimensions. Yes! The wood is as beautiful as it looks in the pictures!~ *This gun was proofed in both barrels at 12 which means it is in proof between .730 and .740. It currently measures .730 right and .731 left which tells us something we seldom see. This gun incredibly is still at the original bore diameter from when the gun was proofed 120 years ago. It has never seen a polishing. This is a great thing! *The locks of this gun are of BEST design featuring safety sears. The firing pins are bushed also. This is something you generally only see in the high-grade guns. |

A smaller maker English sidelock extremely well made, tight, and sound. The stock dimensions are very "American." Many will appreciate the 2 3/4" nitro proofs. *Charles Smith and Sons were in business in Newark, Notts England from 1879 to 1957. A little known but obviously well established shop to be in business near 80 years. |

Army & Navy 12ga Sidelock ~ A super W.C. Scott built sidelock Hammerless Sidelocks 12 gauge |
4794 67217 |

|
This is a very nice English between the wars (~1927) sidelock for a super price. Don't be put off the by the extension or the long length of pull as we can remove the extension and have a checkered butt done or a pad added instead of the extension for a very nominal charge to achieve a LOP that will work for you. This gun being near 100 years old and still retain over 50% original case color is remarkable. It handles well and is tight on face with excellent bores. The bores are bright and shine. There is a small amount of rust pitting from the result of poor storage just behind the muzzle of the left barrel. See picture. It is not of huge consequence and not at all a safety issue but have lowered the price to compensate. Overall, this gun is in great condition, obviously not having seen much use afield. *Company records show this fine gun dates from 1934, made by Webley & Scott, sold to a Colonel Firth. *The chokes are perfect for upland bird hunting! *Note the excellent choking for upland birds which I will guarantee will put more birds in your bag! |

Webley, later to become Webley and Scott. They are extremely well made. |

Murray & Co. sidelock Damascus from the 1880's ~ No cast so great for a right or left handed shot Hammerless Sidelocks 12 gauge |
6000 17393 |

I can't find a lot of information on this maker but has a London address. Maybe someone can help us out here. What's in the hands is a well-made London sidelock. 1880s-esque drop-edge sidelocks behind 30inch Damascus barrels marked 'not for ball' (which would also place them c.1880s). Deeley & Edge patent forend catch. Some nice color on the action for a gun of its age or perhaps renewed professionally. The stock has been extended with a butt plate. We can help you switch this out with a leather pad if preferred. Nitro reproofed 1976. |

Army & Navy Sidelock built by W.C. Scott ~ a well-made gun at a great price Hammerless Sidelocks 12 gauge |
3959 49538 |
|
|
Existing Army & Navy records show this sidelock was built in 1908 by W.C. Scott. Great dimensions and I really like how this gun opens and closes. It feels like a gun that would be appreciated in the field.
*You know this old girl has seen plenty of service and she does show some scars in handling marks in the wood and blue thinning in places. She would be a great candidate for a light restoration or used and appreciated as is. This gun I noted when first operated did not have auto ejectors. I really like this as having auto ejectors is really one more thing to go wrong and truly in the upland field unnecessary. I will get some flack over this, I am sure! I will agree to disagree. |

French "Verney Carron" Sidelock with Royal Crest on trigger guard ~ 2 3/4" nitro proofs ~ "Couronne Comtale" Hammerless Sidelocks 12 gauge |
5587 J259 |
|
|
This French sidelock intrigues me. It has almost no engraving but on the trigger guard there is elaborate gold intertwined initials (R within an R) with a large gold crown with many (9) points. We were taught in the trade that the more points on the crown the higher the level of royalty. This must have been owned by someone fairly high up the chain. *Assets include full and mod choking, 2 3/4" nitro proofs, high stock for rising birds, and a solid 14 3/4" length of pull. The action features bushed firing pins, ejectors, side-clips, and obviously high-quality locks. For the super tall a pad could be added to get near 15 3/4"! This gun locks up vault tight and has excellent bores. This is a super high quality sidelock for a bargain price. *A client pointed out to us that the gold crown symbol represents that the owner was a member of the French Royal court. "Couronne Comtale" *Negatives are from storage with some very fine pitting in places on the outside of the action even though it retains a good 40% original case color. |

Army & Navy Sidelock by W.C. Scott for a super price Hammerless Sidelocks 12 gauge |

Built about 1911 this quality sidelock is tight and has barrels that ring like church Bells having recently had its barrel ribs relayed by artisan gunsmith Jon Hosford. The barrels lock up tight. The gun features bushed firing pins, a feature generally only found on high grade guns. *The bores are super on this fine sidelock but due to some very light corrosion on the fences on the outside of the gun we can sell the wonderful gun at the same price as a basic boxlock. A super value for a gun that will perform in the field for many years to come. |

A very nice sidelock for the price of a boxlock due to the less known name. Carr Brothers started in 1878 on Cloth Hall St., Huddersfield, Yorks. Wm. Atkinson & Sons~ Lancaster, Kendel, and Morecambe ~ A lovely 30" barreled English sidelock for a great price Hammerless Sidelocks 12 gauge |
3465 3155 |
|
|
This gun features nitro proofed 30" barrels with mirror bores. Other features include auto ejectors, tight on face barrels to action, and excellent modern stock dimensions cut from a very nice piece of English walnut. The left choke is tighter than many (like me) might want it but remember we can have chokes opened very reasonably. Also, if you need a longer LOP we can provide excellent English style leather covered pads up to 1". This is a very nice example of an English sidelock. It is well balanced and feels great between the hands as any well made gun should. I did not know much of this maker so I did some sleuthing on internet and actually found quite a lot: Built between 1901 and 1905 by address's on rib William Atkinson was the son of Joseph Atkinson of Lancaster. He was born in 1851. By 1871 William had joined his father in the business in Lancaster, but in about 1874 he opened his own business at 52 Stricklandgate, Kendal, Westmoreland; in about 1878 this moved to 8 All Hallows Lane. There may have been a branch of the firm in Preston. In 1874 William and his wife (Eleanor b. 1850) had a son, Joseph Harvey Atkinson, and in 1876 another, Arthur Falder Atkinson (both born in Kendal), they both worked in the business as gunmaker's assistants, there were also had two daughters born in Kendal, Edith (b.1873) and Maud (b.1878) who appear to have worked in the business. In 1881 Joseph Atkinson retired and William took over the business in Lancaster re-naming it William Atkinson. In about 1885 the firm moved to 20 Market Street, between 1890 and 1901 they took over the adjoining premises at 18 Market Street. Between 1890 and 1894 the business in Kendal moved to 58 Highgate. Joseph Atkinson died in the late 1890s, and in 1900 the firm Lancaster business was re-named William Atkinson & Sons. By this time the firm had a substantial trade in bicycles. In about 1901 a branch was opened at 11 Skipton Street, Morecambe, Lancashire. This was probably run by one of the sons, it appears to have closed in about 1905. Between 1901 and 1905 the Kendal business became known as Atkinson & Griffin, it appears to have ceased trading in 1925. Between about 1905 and 1909 the firm in Lancaster occupied premises in North Road. In about 1935 the firm moved to 26 Market Street, Lancaster, but the Lancaster business appears to have closed in 1940. In 1955 Thomas Atkinson & Sons was recorded at 19a Stricklandgate, Kendal. Thomas Atkinson was certainly related, perhaps only distantly. The firm appears to have closed in about 1985. |

Nice barrels on this Coggy sidelock. A high stocked gun for rising birds with a lot of cast off for a beard or broader face. Way too high for me but if it works for you this gun is a bargain. The gun appears to be on face, but I do feel an ever so slight movement. It is so slight I cannot tell where it is coming from so very minor. *Early Spring Sale guns have a no return policy unless we fail to mention a defect or serious problem |

We are cleaning out the vault preparing for a new shipment so stay tuned for a few project guns like this. Thick walls on this one but with some dings and scratches. There is some pitting in the bores, but it does not look too deep. The gun needs rejoining and the wood refinished and of course the Damascus re-browned would be nice! A true project but priced to go! *The gun at one time had a leather covered cheek piece. This would be filled in with wood and died to match or even a pad put back like it was originally. |

|
| Completed circa 1989 based off of 2 3/4" London nitro proofing this is an exceptional McKay Brown round action. I love how the gun perfectly balances with its 27" barrels. The chokes are perfect for upland hunting. Quail beware! This is a super value on this Scottish round action. You could buy a new one at the current price of 80,000 pounds ($104,000 + 15% current USA tariff @15,600 =$119,000) or buy ours and I guarantee ours would be nicer! | |||

| This is a very nice small bore 16g. with great dimensions, chokes, and light with its 28" barrels. This gun would make a fantastic upland shotgun which would make you shine in the fields and embarrass your friends. This is a light snappy 16! | |||
