This is a great little Purdey for a great price. So you will ask, why is this gun so cheap for a Purdey? Two reasons. We got a great deal and are passing it on to you and also there is some very light (very hard to see) pitting towards the muzzles. This Purdey is tight, in proof with great wall thickness, and field ready. Purdey Ledger says: No. 12868 Completed: 9th December 1887 For: Basil Scott-Murray Esq Description: A hammerless game gun Weight: 6lb. 12oz. Calibre: 12-bore Barrels: 30in. Some of you know me and that I am attracted to quality Damascus guns. This gun pulled me across the room when I saw it in a rack in England. From that distance I could see it was a shotgun of the highest form without knowing the makers name. Much to my delight I found on close inspection a Stephen Grant, one of my favorite makers. The condition of this fine shotgun is very nice and appears in original condition seeing little if no restoration. There is a small stock extension which we could remove and replace with a fine leather covered pad if one would like for a LOP up to 15 1/2"

Completed in 1903 this is a true Edwardian era gun ( Queen Victoria died in 1901 thank you Austin). The gun is found in an original Grant case which also is in very nice original condition.

Does anyone recognize the family crest in the stock?

William Powell and Son Sidelock in very nice condition in its makers case ~ This is a super deal on an extremely nice English sidelock
Hammerless Sidelocks

James Woodward built a lot of Best guns with 29" barrels and this gun proves that other great makers like William Powell built guns with this barrel length also. I really do like this length as to me it is the best of both worlds. They swing well but are light enough to carry all day.

This Sidelock was once one of pair but the number one gun it seems is lost to time. The near full coverage scroll engraving is very crisp and retains some case color, near 40%. The gun locks up vault tight and the barrels are in very good order. They are bright, ring well. They do show some very light frosting but absolutely no deep pitting of any kind. We can arrange to have this frosting removed to become mirror if your one of those who demands perfection.

The case does appear to be an original Powell case. I note when we took the picture it was when the gun was just unpacked from England. This case will clean up nice and we will do that before the gun ships out.

Surviving company records show our gun was sold to Major S.J. Symons on 14 September 1907. It came back to Powell and was sold 2nd hand on 13 December 1945 to Major H.D. Semist

This little under six and a half pound London sidelock has great barrels. While a vintage gun the stock dimensions are quite modern and would fit many well. The 14 3/8" length of pull can easily be lengthened up to one inch with a pad for the person that needs an extra long stock.

I love the engraving on this fine double. The near perfect layout is obviously by the hand of a talented and confident artisan.

This very interesting Lancaster is one of their "12-20" models . The Lancaster 12/20 was marketed as a 12 GA gun with the heft of a 20GA. How did they do that, you might ask? They use the Baker patent locks which avoid deep cuts in the bar of the action, thereby allowing for a smaller action compared to the standard sidelocks. This one features a pigeon forend, disk set strikers, and assisted opening. Built about 1928 so of the famous between the war's London quality.

Built in 1937 this little between the wars beauty is in very nice condition. She features very tight on face steel barrels with excellent wall thickness and chokes. The stock dimensions being quite modern are perfect for many. This action features assisted opening.

C&H produced a large number of fair quality but inexpensive boxlocks which I believe resulted in a reputation of lesser priced guns. What is not well known is that they built very nice higher grade and quality guns like the one we are offering here. Whoever gets this gun will be getting a huge amount of quality for their dollars spent.

Wm. Atkinson & Sons~ Lancaster, Kendel, and Morecambe ~ A lovely 30" barreled English sidelock for a great price

This gun features nitro proofed 30" barrels with mirror bores. Other features include auto ejectors, tight on face barrels to action, and excellent modern stock dimensions cut from a very nice piece of English walnut. The left choke is tighter than many (like me) might want it but remember we can have chokes opened very reasonably. Also, if you need a longer LOP we can provide excellent English style leather covered pads up to 1".

This is a very nice example of an English sidelock. It is well balanced and feels great between the hands as any well made gun should.

I did not know much of this maker so I did some sleuthing on internet and actually found quite a lot:

Built between 1901 and 1905 by address's on rib William Atkinson was the son of Joseph Atkinson of Lancaster. He was born in 1851. By 1871 William had joined his father in the business in Lancaster, but in about 1874 he opened his own business at 52 Stricklandgate, Kendal, Westmoreland; in about 1878 this moved to 8 All Hallows Lane. There may have been a branch of the firm in Preston. In 1874 William and his wife (Eleanor b. 1850) had a son, Joseph Harvey Atkinson, and in 1876 another, Arthur Falder Atkinson (both born in Kendal), they both worked in the business as gunmaker's assistants, there were also had two daughters born in Kendal, Edith (b.1873) and Maud (b.1878) who appear to have worked in the business. In 1881 Joseph Atkinson retired and William took over the business in Lancaster re-naming it William Atkinson. In about 1885 the firm moved to 20 Market Street, between 1890 and 1901 they took over the adjoining premises at 18 Market Street. Between 1890 and 1894 the business in Kendal moved to 58 Highgate. Joseph Atkinson died in the late 1890s, and in 1900 the firm Lancaster business was re-named William Atkinson & Sons. By this time the firm had a substantial trade in bicycles. In about 1901 a branch was opened at 11 Skipton Street, Morecambe, Lancashire. This was probably run by one of the sons, it appears to have closed in about 1905. Between 1901 and 1905 the Kendal business became known as Atkinson & Griffin, it appears to have ceased trading in 1925. Between about 1905 and 1909 the firm in Lancaster occupied premises in North Road. In about 1935 the firm moved to 26 Market Street, Lancaster, but the Lancaster business appears to have closed in 1940. In 1955 Thomas Atkinson & Sons was recorded at 19a Stricklandgate, Kendal. Thomas Atkinson was certainly related, perhaps only distantly. The firm appears to have closed in about 1985.

I have always appreciated William Evans shotguns. While they had their guns built for them in the London and Birmingham trade they obviously required a very high standard with details and quality that set them apart from many other makers. This dedication to quality is certainly a factor in why they are still in business today.

16g. Sidelocks are very hard for me to find so I was extremely excited to find this little gem in the UK and bring it across the pond. The non –selective single trigger (believe me that is a good thing, selective triggers are the ones that give single triggers a reputation for failure) is crisp and works perfectly. Choking is perfect for upland hunting or woodcock or southern bobwhites. I love 16g. and I really like this gun.

Alex Henry has found new life as a 20g shotgun! What a lovely little gun this has become

Once a masculine double rifle from 1894 this piece of Scottish gun making history has evolved into a superb almost feminine 20g. sidelock that will please the members of the shooting sports for another 100 years or I hope, even more. I have seen and had many shotguns that were once double rifles but I have to say this is the first that is without doubt a true success. Often this conversion would result in a heavy, club like shotgun but this little beauty is well balanced and comes up beautifully.

Besides handling extremely well, Miss Henry is graced with seriously beautiful wood and outstanding engraving. This butterfly is currently one of my favorite guns in the shop at present.

Completed in April of 1982 this is a nice example of what the Germans build. Great dimensions and good balance. Note the Kersten patent double lump extensions for a super tight lock up. This baby is not coming apart! In my hands the gun is lively and comes up naturally.

Briley choke tubes (with wrench) that come with the gun:

Series 3 lead Skeet (2)

Series 3 lead IC (2) Series 3 lead Mod (1)

Series 3 Lead full (2)

Steel only Mod (2)

Steel only IC (1)

If your not in love with the authentic period white line pad I would recommend a new leather covered pad which would look very good.

I love this petite flower. Super light but balances well and feels superb between the hands. It is a self opener! The choke can easily be opened to whatever one would want. I believe this gun is quite rare, I have only seen one other in 25 years of messing with these English guns.

Lots of case colors and tight on face so wonderful condition.
