Purdey built for an American NYC socialite for quail hunting on the family Georgia Quail hunting plantation ~ Still in its original trunk maker's case
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge
4782
24625
Purchased by New York City socialite Cynthia Meldrum Chapin in 1932 for the sole purpose of dove and quail hunting on her husband's Georgia estate. This gun is still, as the initials show, in its original maker's case. The stock dimensions are different now so at some point it was re-stocked and the quality of the work suggests to me it was done by Purdey.

The condition of this super light Purdey is very high with over 90% original case color and blue. What a lovely gift this gun would make to be appreciated and put in the field by another American woman! Check out the Purdey invoice where it lists Mrs. Chapins address as "38 Wall Street, New York" and the bill due was 325 pounds. A large sum for a shotgun in the middle of the great depression between the great wars. Purdey records show:

No. 24625 Completed: October 1932 For: Mrs. C.M. Chapin Description: A lightweight hammerless ejector game gun Weight: 5lb. 14¼oz. Calibre: 12-bore (2 5/8in. Case) Barrels: 26in. Whitworth Choke: True Cyl & Tight Cyl Stock: 13 5/8in. Cross-Eyed Notes: Stocked for right hand/left eye, cast off 1 3/16in. and 2 5/8in. bend at heel Finished with a leather-covered Silver’s recoil-pad, with rounded toe and sides Note in choke book: “open shooting for quail and dove”

Ordered in March of 1898 for a J.E. Gladstone Esquire.

So beautifully balanced when I shot this gun I could not guess the weight. It feels much lighter than what it is but swings like a dream.

This gun features new steel barrels by the maker proofed 2 3/4 oz.. These barrels were proofed at .729 and that is as they measure today.

This London best gun comes in a beautiful English trunk case in excellent condition.

If the length of pull is too long for you we can easily arrange to make it shorter to meet your needs.

What a lovely London sidelock from circa 1900. F.T. Baker guns I have noted over the years tend to have exceptional engraving and this one is no exception. This gun offers excellent modern stock dimensions and chokes that will kill clays or birds with regularity.

*This gun was proofed for 2 1/2" but because for many years 2 1/2" shells were not available in America its chamber was lengthened to 2 3/4" so it could be continued to be used here in the USA. These barrels are in excellent condition.

The Holland "Climax" or "Dominion" grade sidelocks like this are a favorite of mine as they have a wonderful radiused, almost round action and tend to be very well balanced.

This example, built in the mid 1880's has great wall thickness and choking and is tight on face and field ready. There is some very light pitting or hazing in the barrels but nothing of any consequence.

A beautiful high-grade London sidelock with tight and excellent steel barrels and stunning wood. Need I say more? This gun has near perfect choking for most wild bird upland hunting.

Normally this gun would be in the 6-8K range but due to some very minor surface pitting in places on the action (see the pictures, super minor) we can offer this beauty for only 4600.00. A super London high grade sidelock at almost a boxlock price. For the hunter that wants a high-quality gun that he or she is not afraid to take in the field this is a super opportunity.

After seeing my write up on this gun received this email from our famous hunting/naturalist gun writer friend concerning this gun:

Wow Kirby, What a beautiful gun. I love Lang guns. You forgot to mention in the write up that it is stocked to the fences, and has absolutely perfect chokes for a game gun. Cheers, George

This is a very nice English between the wars (~1927) sidelock for a super price. Don't be put off the by the extension or the long length of pull as we can remove the extension and have a checkered butt done or a pad added instead of the extension for a very nominal charge to achieve a LOP that will work for you.

This gun being near 100 years old and still retain over 50% original case color is remarkable. It handles well and is tight on face with excellent bores.

*Note the excellent choking for upland birds which I will guarantee will put more birds in your bag!

An enchanting sidelock from Blanford, a village in Dorset in the south coastal region of England. Our gun was probably built between 1910 and 1920. It is of very high quality and is tight and field ready. I appreciate the quality which was immediately evident from the first moment it was placed in my hands. An exceptional value for an English high grade sidelock priced low only because of its lesser-known name.

Arthur Conyers is a very old (established 1868) gunmaker/shop in Blanford who are still in business today but now specialize in the new generation of hunting air rifles.

This small maker claims they have been in business since 1795! A well-made sidelock that won't break the bank compared to buying one of the big four London makers.

This gun features wonderful engraving and a Purdey style hidden third bite. Note the Long LOP extendable with a pad to near 16".

The triggers are a bit soft for my liking but useable. We could recommend a gunsmith to crispen them up if they are not to your liking.

Lots of features on this quality Spanish sidelock. Chopperlump barrels, hand detachable locks, bushed firing pins, Purdey hidden third bite, side clips, and articulated front trigger. Add to this near 100% case color and blue on the barrels and you can see this fine shotgun has seen very little use. For a Spanish gun it is light, almost as light as the English sidelock it copied.

The elephant in the room on this gun is why does it have a minimum wall of .019 in the right barrel? This is measured about 8" from the muzzle on top of the right barrel, a point in the bore where the load is reaching maximum velocity and pressure is dropping rapidly. The bores measure .029 in both barrels which is as it was built so it appears this minimal wall is original. The answer to the question is, as in many of the best British guns, the makers understood that on the last half of the barrels the pressures are quite low and they were trying to keep the balance of the guns between the hands so are often struck quite thin where the pressure is low.

I see some (just a few) very minor pitting in places inside both barrels. The barrels are basically very bright and clean.

Existing Army & Navy records show this sidelock was built in 1908 by W.C. Scott. Great dimensions and I really like how this gun opens and closes. It feels like a gun that would be appreciated in the field.

*You know this old girl has seen plenty of service and she does show some scars in handling marks in the wood and blue thinning in places. She would be a great candidate for a light restoration or used and appreciated as is. This gun I noted when first operated did not have auto ejectors. I really like this as having auto ejectors is really one more thing to go wrong and truly in the upland field unnecessary. I will get some flack over this, I am sure! I will agree to disagree.

This gun features nitro proofed 30" barrels with mirror bores. Other features include auto ejectors, tight on face barrels to action, and excellent modern stock dimensions cut from a very nice piece of English walnut. The left choke is tighter than many (like me) might want it but remember we can have chokes opened very reasonably. Also, if you need a longer LOP we can provide excellent English style leather covered pads up to 1".

This is a very nice example of an English sidelock. It is well balanced and feels great between the hands as any well made gun should.

I did not know much of this maker so I did some sleuthing on internet and actually found quite a lot:

Built between 1901 and 1905 by address's on rib William Atkinson was the son of Joseph Atkinson of Lancaster. He was born in 1851. By 1871 William had joined his father in the business in Lancaster, but in about 1874 he opened his own business at 52 Stricklandgate, Kendal, Westmoreland; in about 1878 this moved to 8 All Hallows Lane. There may have been a branch of the firm in Preston. In 1874 William and his wife (Eleanor b. 1850) had a son, Joseph Harvey Atkinson, and in 1876 another, Arthur Falder Atkinson (both born in Kendal), they both worked in the business as gunmaker's assistants, there were also had two daughters born in Kendal, Edith (b.1873) and Maud (b.1878) who appear to have worked in the business. In 1881 Joseph Atkinson retired and William took over the business in Lancaster re-naming it William Atkinson. In about 1885 the firm moved to 20 Market Street, between 1890 and 1901 they took over the adjoining premises at 18 Market Street. Between 1890 and 1894 the business in Kendal moved to 58 Highgate. Joseph Atkinson died in the late 1890s, and in 1900 the firm Lancaster business was re-named William Atkinson & Sons. By this time the firm had a substantial trade in bicycles. In about 1901 a branch was opened at 11 Skipton Street, Morecambe, Lancashire. This was probably run by one of the sons, it appears to have closed in about 1905. Between 1901 and 1905 the Kendal business became known as Atkinson & Griffin, it appears to have ceased trading in 1925. Between about 1905 and 1909 the firm in Lancaster occupied premises in North Road. In about 1935 the firm moved to 26 Market Street, Lancaster, but the Lancaster business appears to have closed in 1940. In 1955 Thomas Atkinson & Sons was recorded at 19a Stricklandgate, Kendal. Thomas Atkinson was certainly related, perhaps only distantly. The firm appears to have closed in about 1985.

P. Webley was the company that joined with W.C. Scott to form Welbey and Scott, one of the largest English gun makers in the English gun making history. In my experience the P. Webley guns were all of very high quality.

This gun is in proof and thin minimum walls are out near the muzzle where they should be and where there is very little pressure. We have priced this gun attractively for this reason and if you are interested in this gun, I suggest you call and buy it so you can examine it in person and take advantage of our five day inspection and free return shipping if it does not meet your needs for any reason.

This gun is discounted due to the light greying and fine pitting on both locks and a little on the barrels and a gunsmith pointed out to us recently that the ribs need to be relayed as the barrels do not ring well. The bones of this gun are good with great wall thickness and bores on the barrels which are tight on face. A rib relay with new black is about 800.00 via Dan Morgan, our gunsmith. Thirty-inch guns this light with good dimensions are hard to come by so this gun is worth the time and money to make into a great field gun.
