Wow, This shotgun is in fantastic condition for being built in 1887. I love the strong Damascus pattern and the 60% or better case hardening on this gun. This matron has not seen a lot of use, almost virginal. I would love to see what kind of patterns this gun would throw. Did I mention how light it is?

James Purdey Live Pigeon gun in minty original condition just walked in our shop... ....Investment gun buyers heads up!
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge
3119
15404

It is on the rare occasion we have a gun come into the shop that just sets one on his heels and the sounds uttered from the throat are "O.. M.. G...." This is one of those guns. At the height of London's golden age this gun built in October 1895 not only exudes quality but sings out condition. This Live Pigeon Purdey has over 90% original case hardening and blue and is still to be found in its original makers oak & leather case with tools. It is interesting to note that in the original ledger the gun was ordered with a pigeon rib (see pictures). I almost feel sorry for the first owner that kept this gun in the closet and did not use it. Almost.

This live pigeon Purdey is the perfect gun for Sporting clays, live pigeons!, wild pheasants and incoming ducks. For the serious gun investor who will only buy condition guns I encourage you to seriously consider this gun. For the sportsman that wants to shoot modern 2 3/4" loads in a legend for over 75% less than the cost of new Purdey here is a bargain.

James Purdey BEST Sidelock with pigeon weight, perfect for those boxed birds or wild South Dakota pheasants or sporting clays
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge
3059
18497
This is a very nice example of what James Purdey could produce. Built in the middle of the Edwardian period around 1906, this gun exemplifies the quality of the highest craftsmanship Purdey ever achieved. There is much debate on this, with many favoring their guns built between the wars, but I will stand my ground on these guns built before WWI. Retaining 40% original case hardening and over 90% barrel blue, this gun is in excellent condition. The original 2 3/4" proof and the heavier weight indicate an intended use of heavier loads and reduced felt recoil making this an excellent choice for sporting clay's, live pigeons, or wild birds in the field.

Holland & Holland Royal grade with absolute stunning condition, engraving, wood, craftsmanship, and... ...balance!
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge

16230
This Holland Royal astounds me with its quality. From sea to sea features like the shell fences, the stunning wood, the acanthus leaf full coverage engraving, and the finest fit and finish possible, make this the finest Holland Royal we have ever had in our hands.

Holland records show us this Royal grade was built for one J. Graham Stewart on the 11th of August 1894.

* I will note that this shotgun has a left side safety built in the left lock. If you have a prejudice against Greener safeties please do not discount this gun as this safety does not work on that patent and is a 100% easier to operate than the standard Greener safety. You do not have to cant the gun to operate it, but hold it the same as a top safety gun.

A. Venables of Oxford is an old and well respected English gun maker family that was in business for 139 years. Established in 1846 and they were in Business in Oxford until 1985. This matched pair was made to the highest standards and are in excellent condition. Features include the Purdey style hidden third bite and some of the highest quality rose and scroll engraving I have ever seen. These guns come with their original oak & leather case. It is so hard in these times to find guns in their original case.

Researching what records we have it appears these fine guns were built between the wars in the mid 1930's. Price is for the pair and really if you know what your looking at the price would be sound even just for one! What a fantastic pre-war high quality live pigeon gun. Featuring 3" nitro proofs and the stock dimensions and weight one needs for pigeons or the sporting clay course. This gun was built to take it. James Woodward & Sons. 12 ga with their classic forward under lever at a super new price
Hammerless Sidelocks

3751

This little beauty dates from 1879 and unlike us humans is still as beautiful now as on the day she was delivered. I have been hunting the last two years with a push forward under lever and I have to say I like this action very much. This gun has exceptional sexy dark marble cake English walnut. If you need a longer length of pull we can easily add a London style leather covered pad to get a LOP up to 15."

The history of Woodward is long and full of only positive achievements. While they built less than 7200 guns to the present day it is interesting to note that over 5200 of these guns were built before 1898. James Purdey now owns the records and the building rights.

Charles Lancaster sidelock ejector with self opening action - 1888 London quality at a super price
Hammerless Sidelocks
12 gauge

This is a very nice Lancaster featuring the self opening mechanism. It is ready for the field. These guns have received a bum wrap as they have been called "Wrist breakers" as they were supposedly hard to close. When you close these it is cocking the main springs after firing. I find them no harder to close than a Purdey, not a big deal. The secret, as in Purdey's, is knowing how to snap the gun closed. Learn this trick and it is easy. This gun is very high quality at any price.

I really appreciate the rounded action on these, they are so wonderful to carry. W.C. Scott certainly built this gun with the easy give away of the wonderful crystal window cocking indicators located on each lock. These are excellent and classic doubles.

So many of the quality gun makers names have been lost with time and this gun by Charles Smith gives us a direct connection with a smaller maker that very little is known but where the quality shows through. Nigel Brown's Book on British Gunmakers Volume III lists this as a Newark England maker. The gun retains considerable amount of case color on the beautifully engraved locks. I might mention the locks are high quality also with safety sears. This is a real value in an English sidelock.

What a nice gun for less than many lower end new machine made doubles. Built ~ 1925 this is a great example of pre-war English craftsmanship. Notice the weight! What a great gun to carry all day. John Rogers was located at 23 Bath Street, Birmingham England. The business seems to have closed sometime during WWII.

There was a fair number of these made in Britain and the story goes it was because of the number of wounded soldiers that lost vision in their right eye after WWI. This gun does this well, when you lift the gun to your right shoulder the rib lines up with the left eye. If this works for you this is a bargain!

Manhattan Arms Sidelock built by JP Sauer, early Prussian gun
Hammerless Sidelocks

These Prussian built Sauer side locks are very high quality. This one has been expertly spliced in the pistol grip to bend up the drop measurements to modern dimension. The bore does have some light pitting but overall bright. Barrels are possibly reduced in length but the they are filed together at the muzzle if done, it was not much.

Nice Damascus brown on these barrels. The wrist has been well repaired with epoxy and seems very strong. A little checkering and cosmetics could make this a nice looking gun. The bores are fairly bright with a light frost but have numerous dings and one dent that should be removed.

I have loved this gun as one of my own but the wife needs a new kitchen! (She certainly deserves one).

Woodward built very few shotguns but even fewer small bores. This gun is less than 5 and 1/2 pounds and balances perfectly. It swings like a Boss 20 gauge! The quality of this gun is off the scale. It does not get any better. I will hate to see it go. If you need a longer LOP we can easily add a leather covered pad.

Finding high grade 16g. English sidelocks is just plain hard to do so it is exciting for me when a sweet one like this comes in the shop. Nothing "plain" about this gun however which features exceptional full coverage engraving and very nice wood. Extremely well balanced and light at 5 lbs. 14 oz. The gun has recent 2 3/4" nitro proofs and is very tight on face ready for the field.

Finding 16g. nitro proofed English guns with 30" barrels has been like trying to find rocking horse poop. Well, maybe not that bad but they have been so hard to find of late. I am a 16 gauge fan as most of you know and I have to say I do love these long barrels that swing for us so well. James Woodward 20g. O/U in excellent condition ! Built for an American in 1929, these guns were among the finest O/U 's the British ever made
Hammerless Sidelocks

James Woodward 20g. Sidelock ejector with 26” steel barrels. Tons of case color on the locks and beautiful wood with excellent and long dimensions. These prewar 20g. over and under’ s are ever so rare and extremely sought after as they are known for their magic wand quality. Delivered to Abercrombie and Fitch NY on the 29th Dec 1929, the most sought after vintage of British BEST guns. If this Woodward 20g. is a magic wand it was possessed by Merlin.

I find that many look at guns of this type and price and cannot justify the cost but then will go out and buy a new car at this price point and in ten years that car is worth almost nothing. Invest and enjoy a beauty like this little 20 and in ten years it will be worth considerably more than the price, not less or nothing like their 10 year old car. Take this opportunity to make a solid investment while allowing you to own and enjoy what many connoisseurs consider to be the paragon of all shotguns.

AYA ~ High grade .410 true sidelock ejector with many wonderful features and great conditon
Hammerless Sidelocks
410 gauge

If you know me, I am a strong proponent of owning a vintage gun over something modern. With small bore English style guns I do make an exception as in high condition and rare these English small bores can be very expensive. Modern reproduction guns make a viable alternative and will provide a beautiful gun with many features for a bargain price in comparison to the English originals.

The AYA Company has an excellent reputation and this little 410 shows what they can do well. I am really impressed with its long chopperlump barrels which are very well struck. Other features of quality include a nine pin lock, a rolled trigger guard, articulated front trigger, and bushed firing pins. I forgot to mention this is a round action sidelock with radiused locks!

This little long legged beauty is destined for field.
